Installing wall-to-wall carpet isn't rocket science. By using some specialized tools (available at most tool rental outlets) and being prepared to take your time, it can even be a DIY job.
Your first step is to get rid of the old carpet. Start by removing the moldings around the floor and taking the door off the entrance so you can get the old carpet up and out easily. Give the old carpet a good vacuuming so you won't be breathing in dust as you pull it up, and then use a utility knife to cut the carpet into strips about 18 to 24 inches wide.
Start at one end and pull the carpet off of the tackless strips and roll it up in sections. Some people feel that you can reuse the existing underlay, but in most cases it will be worn out just like the carpet, so you're better off getting rid of it as well.
Remove the existing tackless strips and make sure the floor is clean and dry. This is a good time to check your subfloor and securely fasten any floorboards that may be loose so they won't squeak under the new carpet (use 1 1/2-inch screws into the underlying floor joists).
Install new tackless strips around the perimeter of the room, but not in front of doorways. Leave a space of about half an inch between the strips and the wall, and be sure the pins or tacks face towards the wall. (They're called tackless strips even though they have two or three rows or very sharp tacks, because using these "tackless strips" means you don't need to "tack" carpet down.) At corners, make sure the tackless strips are butted tightly against each other.
Put the underpad down in strips that overlap the tackless strips. Butt the strips against each otherdon't overlap themthen staple the underlay down along the inside edge of the tackless strip. Trim the excess underlay along the inside of the tackless strip and use duct tape to seal the seams.
A wall-to-wall carpet will shrink and expand with changes in temperature and air pressure. If you bring a carpet in from outside and install it right away, as the carpet adjusts to the conditions inside your home it may stretch and shrink away from the tackless strips, or may expand toward the walls and wrinkle and buckle in the middle. To prevent this, allow the new carpet to rest, uninstalled, in the room for at least 24 hours. It will adjust to your conditions and remain true to the dimensions you cut it to.
To install carpet properly, you need to start with a piece that overlaps the edge of the floor by four to six inches. The overlay can then be trimmed so the carpet fits properly. To cut your first section, measure the room at its longest point and add six inches to that measurement. Mark the back of your carpet on both edges with that measurement and join the two marks with a chalk line. Fold the carpet over on itself, and using a straight edge and a sharp utility knife, cut through the backside of your carpet. Be sure to place a piece of scrap board underneath your cut line to protect the underlying carpet.
If your room is wide enough that you're going to need another piece of carpet, follow the same process with the second piecemeasure, mark, and trim. Before you cut, be sure the carpet pile is running the same way in both pieces, and that the carpet piece is large enough to overlap the wall by four to six inches, as well as overlapping the first piece of carpet by four to six inches. Try to lay out your carpet pieces so the seams won't be in noticeable areas even if sometimes that just isn't possible.
Where the carpet pieces will join, overlap the two pieces, and then using a utility knife or a rented seam cutter, cut through both pieces of carpet, ensuring the edges will match exactly. After cutting the carpet, center a piece of seaming tape on the floor underneath where they join, adhesive side up. Use the seaming iron to activate the adhesive (the iron goes on the tape, not on top of the carpet), and then butt the edges together and seal the seam with a rolling pin or a carpet roller.
Use a knee kicker to attach the carpet along one edge. A knee kicker is a solid metal tool about 18 inches long with "teeth" that will grip the carpet on one end, and a heavily padded "butt" on the other. Place the toothed end of the kicker about three inches from the wall and drive your knee forcefully into the padded end of the tool. This will stretch the carpet over the tackless strip where the tacks will grab it and hold it firmly in place.
A carpet stretcher will finish attaching the carpet. A carpet stretcher is similar to knee kicker, but much longer. Put one end of the carpet stretcher against the wall where the carpet is already attached and place the other end about six inches from the far wall. The carpet stretcher also has teeth to grip the carpet, and when you push on the activation lever, it will stretch the carpet over the tackless strip near the far wall.
Work your way around the room stretching the carpet over the tackless strips, and trim the carpet near the wall with a utility knife or a wall trimmer.
Using a stair tool, tuck the carpet down into the gap between the tackless strips and the wall. At the doorway, trim the carpet so the edge is centered under the closed door and install a door edge strip. Finally, cut any vent openings and reinstall the molding on the baseboards.
That's it. Stretch your back, check to see if your knees still work, and then take some time to admire what all your hard work has accomplished.

A proper, professional installation is crucial to the life and performance of your carpet. Because of this, it is important to know what to expect during your carpet installation.
Most installers will move your furniture as part of their installation; however, you will still need to move your small items like lamps, televisions or any other breakables before the installer arrives. If you have any larger items, oversized furniture or appliances you may need to arrange to have this moved by a third party, but check with your installer first, they can tell you just what to expect. Your overall goal is to move any items that could get broken while making your installers job as easy as possible. This will speed up the installation process.
Once the work begins, your installer will be responsible for removing and disposing of your old carpet. They will remove any moulding or trim in the room and prep the subfloor for installation. Moulding and trim can be fragile and despite their best efforts, your installation team may break a few pieces. If this happens, it is typically your responsibility to replace them. At some point, your installer may need to remove your doors to complete the installation. If the new carpet is thicker, your doors will have to be trimmed before they can be reinstalled. Most carpet installers do not perform carpentry work so it will be your responsibility to either trim them yourself or hire a professional to reinstall them.

A deck is a permanent covering over a compartment or a hull[1] of a ship. On a boat or ship, the primary or upper deck is the horizontal structure that forms the "roof" of the hull, strengthening it and serving as the primary working surface. Vessels often have more than one level both within the hull and in the superstructure above the primary deck, similar to the floors of a multi-story building, that are also referred to as decks, as are certain compartments and decks built over specific areas of the superstructure. Decks for some purposes have specific names.
The main purpose of the upper or primary deck is structural, and only secondarily to provide weather-tightness and support people and equipment. The deck serves as the lid to the complex box girder which is the hull. It resists tension, compression, and racking forces. The deck's scantling is usually the same as the topsides, or might be heavier if the deck is expected to carry heavier loads (for example a container ship). The deck will be reinforced around deck fittings such as the capstan, cleats, or bollards.
On ships with more than one level, deck refers to the level itself. The actual floor surface is called the sole, the term deck refers to a structural member tying the ships frames or ribs together over the keel. In modern ships, the interior decks are usually numbered from the primary deck, which is #1, downward and upward. So the first deck below the primary deck will be #2, and the first above the primary deck will be #A2 or #S2 (for "Above" or "Superstructure"). Some merchant ships may alternatively designate decks below the primary deck, usually machinery spaces, by numbers, and those above it, in the accommodation block, by letters. Ships may also call decks by common names, or (especially on cruise ships) may invent fanciful and romantic names for a specific deck or area of that specific ship, such as the Lido deck of the Princess Cruises' Love Boat.
Equipment mounted on deck, such as the ship's wheel, binnacle, fife rails, and so forth, may be collectively referred to as deck furniture. Weather decks in western designs evolved from having structures fore (forward or front) and aft (rear) of the ship mostly clear; in the 19th century, pilothouses/wheelhouses and deckhouses began to appear, eventually developing into the superstructure of modern ships. Eastern designs developed earlier, with efficient middle decks and minimalist fore and aft cabin structures across a range of designs.
In vessels having more than one deck there are various naming conventions, numerically, alphabetically, etc. However, there are also various common historical names and types of decks:
A traditional wood deck would consist of planks laid fore and aft over beams and along carlins, the seams of which are caulked and paid with tar. A yacht or other fancy boat might then have the deck canvased, with the fabric laid down in a thick layer of paint or sealant, and additional coats painted over. The wash or apron boards form the joint between the deck planking and that of the topsides, and are caulked similarly.
Modern "constructed decks" are used primarily on fiberglass, composite, and cold-molded hulls. The under structure of beams and carlins is the same as above. The decking itself is usually multiple layers of marine-grade plywood, covered over with layers of fibreglass in a plastic resin such as epoxy or polyester overlapped onto the topsides of the hull.
Generally speaking, the method outlined for "constructed decks" is most similar to metal decks. The deck plating is laid over metal beams and carlins and tacked temporarily in place. The difficulty in metal construction is avoiding distortion of the plate while welding due to the high heat involved in the process. Welds are usually double pass, meaning each seam is welded twice, a time consuming process which may take longer than building the wood deck. However, welds result in a waterproof deck which is strong and easily repairable. The deck structure is welded to the hull, making it structurally a single unit.
Because a metal deck, painted to reduce corrosion, can pick up heat from the sun, and be quite slippery and noisy to work on, a layer of wood decking or thick non-skid paint is often applied to its surface.
The process for building a deck in fiberglass is the same as for building a hull: a female mould is built, a layer of gel coat is sprayed in, then layers of fiberglass in resin are built up to the required deck thickness (if the deck has a core, the outer skin layers of fiberglass and resin are laid, then the core material, and finally the inner skin layers.) The deck is removed from the mould and usually mechanically fastened to the hull.
Fiberglass decks are quite slick with their mirror-smooth surfaces, so a non-skid texture is often moulded into their surface, or non-skid pads glued down in working areas.
The thickness of the decking affects how strong the hull is, and is directly related to how thick the skin of the hull itself is, which is of course related to how large the vessel is, the kind of work it is expected to do, and the kind of weather it may reasonably be expected to endure. While a naval engineer or architect may have precise methods of determining what the scantlings should be, traditional builders used previous experiences and simpler rules-of-thumb to determine how thick the deck should be built.
The numbers derived by these formulae gives a rough number for determining the average thickness of materials based on some crude hull measurements. Below the waterline the thickness should be approximately 115% of the result, while upper topsides and decks might be reduced to 85% of the result.

For students looking for an undergraduate degree, courses typically last four years, with an option of taking a year out to undertake paid work experience. If you already have an undergraduate degree that isn't accredited by the LI, you can still enter the profession by completing an LI-accredited postgraduate conversion course. These courses generally last between 18 months and two years full -time, however, there are part-time options available. Applicants to the conversion course do not need to have studied a related undergraduate degree but should have a keen interest in design and the environment.
The undergraduate and postgraduate courses lead to Licentiate Membership of the LI, which is the first step towards becoming chartered. Landscape practices are very supportive of graduates undertaking their pathway to chartership.
All students on LI-accredited courses or those with a particular interest in landscape architecture are encouraged to sign up to be a student member of the LI. As a student member, you will gain access to events and professional networks and receive a Student News quarterly email and industry update. Students on accredited courses who take up student membership will receive an automatic upgrade to licentiate membership when they graduate. Becoming a member of the institute demonstrates your commitment to the profession.

After successfully completing an accredited undergraduate or postgraduate course you will be eligible for Licentiate Membership of the LI.
This is followed by a period of mentored experience, which is carried out while you work, as part of the Pathway to Chartership (P2C). Successful completion of the P2C leads to chartered status and full membership of the LI.
Once you have full membership, you will be known as a Chartered Member of the Landscape Institute and can use the letters CMLI after your name.
The P2C develops your knowledge, understanding and professionalism in landscape architecture and ensures that you have the required competencies for chartered status.
Most people need between one to three years working on the P2C in professional practice before moving on to the final stage, which is an oral examination, but everyone progresses at their own pace.
When you become chartered you are required to carry out a minimum of 25 hours of continuing professional development (CPD) a year. This can be gained in a variety of ways and the LI has details of CPD days and other useful events on its website. For those at the top of the profession, there is the opportunity to apply for Fellowship level membership with the LI.
The ways in which you can progress your career as a landscape architect include taking on greater responsibility, taking charge of projects, managing a team or becoming a specialist in a certain area. The rate of progression will depend on how ambitious you are and how quickly you acquire additional knowledge and skills.
The most important landmark, demonstrating that you are a fully qualified landscape architect, is obtaining chartered membership of the LI. Landscape architects with strong commercial awareness may progress to leading consultancy roles.
With experience, you could eventually become a partner in a private practice, or set up your own business. To be successful in private practice, you will need a good client and contact base as well as excellent experience, knowledge and skills.

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, youre remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.
When replacing an entire window, first youll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, youll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. Youll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesnt leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.
