Recently, March 31, The Edgefield County Hospital invited the press to view the beginnings of the new medical building going up on their campus and to speak with representatives of two companies in charge of the planning and construction Spratlin & Son Construction and McMillanPazdan Smith Architecture.

Greeting the press also were Hospital CEO Milanes and Travis Haltiwanger, ECH Facilities & Maintenance Director.

A bright, blue morning, following a rainy evening, had left scattered puddles of water over the wide expanse of poured concrete, the foundation of the new building that the Edgefield County Hospital speaks of as the Medical Office Building (MOB), at this time. The water on the foundation did not spell gloom, for it was covered with plastic which protected it somewhat. However, before covering the cement, the contractors noted that they had poured water over the concrete as a way to help harden it. The weather had cooperated well with the foundation, and pretty much all the way, so far. Those in charge said they are close to schedule, and maybe a little ahead in some categories.

Optimism held sway for those telling of the plans and projections: Steve Drane, Technical Director; Jon Duncan, Project Manager; and Eric Trumbull, intern, who had worked in the designing of the building all from the architecture firm. Owner of the Spratlin firm, Johnny Spratlin of Lincolnton, Ga., noted that there were many subcontractors, closer to the area, handling different segments of the structure.

The area to encompass the full building campus is over an acre, and it is estimated that the building itself will cover a third of that close to 17,000 square feet in all (quadrupling the areas the clinics had before). Half of the new space will be the offices for Peachtree Medical, the hospital-owned clinic service; the other half will be for what was originally Edgefield Medical Clinic, now known as Self Medical Clinic. Each of the medical groups has two MDs with a number of second tier professionals to serve the communities of this area. Each clinic will be the same area, one half the square footage, but will have separate entrances and lobbies.

The contractors let it be known that on Monday, April 3, the foundation would be ready for the steel poles to be placed in it for the beginning of the walls and upper part of the building. (The photo accompanying this article shows those steel poles already up, in spite of the severe winds and rains in the County this last week, as photographed April 10.)

In an interesting contrast in before and after of one clinic size, a visit to Peachtree gave evidence of a large practice housed in 2300 sq. feet. It was reported, unofficially, that in one month the practice had seen 900 patients, 400 as walk-ins. These numbers speak an immeasurable added comfort for both patient and doctor upon the completion and opening of the new building. And when will that be? It is hard to say, as the two firms noted. Weather can interfere as well as other problems. However, October seems to be a possibility at this point.

Julie Alin is a design consultant for Altering Spaces and Visual Display, based out of Scheels Home & Hardware in Fargo. Her 22 years spent studying home decor trends have given her a keen eye regarding the market and the products flooding it.

Here are four trends Alin predicts will dominate the home decor market this spring.

Beach retreat

Think casual and relaxed. This trend is achieved through splashes of bright colors, preferably those of the tropical nature, like aqua, azure, kiwi and tangerine.

Alin says the goal is to create a feeling of a getaway retreat with a cool, calm vibe.

Consider incorporating this trend in bathrooms, where water is a natural element, or a sunroom, where natural elements can play a role. Alin says she's also seen this trend worked into teenagers' bedrooms or an office space to invite tranquility.

Neoclassic

For this trend, traditional meets modern in an urban glam setting.

Alin points out the use of rich and unexpected textures in creating this atmosphere as well as metallics and mercury glass necessary to imbue an interesting, light-catching accent.

This trend focuses on creating an artistic statement by allowing unexpected components to offer a high-end look in main living spaces as well as bedrooms. Nailheads in furniture (like upholstered headboards or sofas) are an important design element of this trend, but Alin warns against going overboard with this detail.

"Don't overdo it you need to leave something without nailheads," she says.

This trend can be amplified by using small pops of soft colors like blush pink, robin's egg blue or pale mint green.

Rustic chic

If you're a fan of organic yet eclectic, refined yet modern home decor, this trend is for you. Think mixing metallics like gold and copper as well as global pieces that spark conversation naturally.

This trend also embraces a lot of texture, similar to neoclassic style. It's also a trend that works well for pieces of furniture with live, unpredictable edges like dining room and end tables.

"Thanks to the 'rustic' component, this trend emphasizes warm and cool neutrals as well as rich, earthy tones like topaz and copper," Alin says.

Vintage flea market

This trend capitalizes on the en vogue market of reclaimed or repurposed items. Anything that looks a bit aged or weathered fits here.

In addition to the decor that looks like it has been collected over time, Alin says you should incorporate items like birds and romantic blooms like hydrangeas, lilacs, roses and daisies. Other greenery appropriate for this trend include terns, topiaries and herbs while burlap, linen, twine and rope also play a part.

"Think natural: flowers and greens you'd find in your garden and non-synthetic fabrics," Alin says.

Alin and her business partner Steve Johnson have also been seeing a move toward florals as a general trend.

"But these are bold, stylized florals that are fun and free-flowing," Johnson says.

The nice thing about all of these trends is that homeowners don't need to choose just one to incorporate into a space they each play off another nicely so two trends can be melded, Alin says.

Another comforting factor for homeowners is that no trend just ceases. In the 1950s, the life of a trend was about 15 years, Alin says. Now, it's more like 1.5 to 3 years, but the trend lingers for a while before it completely fades out.

"These days, trends don't just end with a chop; they continue with a 'dot dot dot,'" she says. "And if you really love a trend, find a way to add newness to it."

HARRISON On quiet Cape Monday Cove near the middle of 11-mile Long Lake, one of Maines finest and most desirable inland waters, here is a great home for all four seasons a house that has just been thoroughly renovated, and offers more than 2,800 square feet of living space on two levels.

The crew on the International Space Station (ISS) have successfully replaced a window pane on the Cupola module. The operation was conducted without any risk to the crew, thanks to the innovative design on the modules windows, which involves four panesallowing for internal replacement while risking no pressure loss for the Station.

Window Replacement:

After arriving at the ISS with Node 3, during Endeavours STS-130 mission, the European Space Agency (ESA) built Cupola has provided Station crews with a stunning view of the planet, often shared with the public via downlinked photography and thanks to the increasing use of social media by the astronauts.

The module also hosts a Robotic Work Station (RWS), allowing crewmembers to actually see Visiting Vehicles (VVs) such as SpaceXs Dragon and Japans HTV arrive for berthing, complimenting the camera views of their displays, allowing for increased situational awareness when operating the Stations robotic assets.

The Cupolas seven windows were exposed to space for the first time during STS-130s EVA-3, following the removal of the modules MLI blanket insulation by spacewalkers Bob Behnken and Nick Patrick.

After the spacewalkers removed the launch locks on the windows, the ISS crew cycled the window shields/shutters one at a time, providing them with the first view of the Earth from their new observation deck.

All of the windows werent open at the same time, with the task simply used to check the shutters opened without a problem. A few hours later, all of the windows were opened together, an event that is now commonplace on the ISS.

Although the windows on the Cupola have suffered from their fair share of impacts fromMicroMeteoroid and Orbital Debris (MMOD) strikes, none of the small impacts have caused any serious damage to the module.

The windows are made up offour panes an inner scratch pane to protect the pressure pane from accidental damage,two pressure panes 25mm thick to maintain cabin pressure, and finally an outer debris pane.

In the event of the damage being more serious, on-orbit replacement of an entire window is a design feature.

Such a replacement would require anEVAto fit an external pressure cover to allow for the changeout, with a pressure cover requiring a flight up to the ISS on one of the cargo resupply vehicles.

Several scratch panes are stored on the ISS in the event one requires replacement, which was request by the crew that resulted in the pane being replaced.

Cupola Window 7 Scratch Pane Replacement: The crew replaced the scratch pane on Cupola window 7, the nadir facing window, noted L2 ISS Status Information.

The crew has been requesting scratch pane replacements as many window scratch panes have shown accumulated damage of the years.

Window 7 is the large round window that astronauts tend to use when taking photography of the planet below.

The brand new scratch pane will likely improve if thats even possible the quality of the photographs from the orbital outpost.

Onboard, the crew is preparing for a busy period of Visiting Vehicle activity, with the OA-7 Cygnus set for launch on April 18 on an Atlas V from Cape Canaveral. The crew will be using the RWS in the Cupola for berthing operations with the cargo craft.

Two days later, the next Soyuz mission will launch on a fast track rendezvous to the Station. Soyuz MS-04 is set to launch NASA astronaut Jack Fischer and Fyodor Yurchikhin from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, which is one less passenger than usual.

The pick up the imbalance in the crew rotation quota, Peggy Whitson recently agreed to extend her tour on the Station by three months.

NEW LONDON, Conn. (WTNH) As the weather gets warmer windows start to open and thats where danger rises along with the temperatures. Just this week a Trumbull toddler fell out a second story window onto the pavement below.

Typically a fall greater than twice someones height will put them in a critical category for us, said Lt. Ryan Parker, an EMT and firefighter with the Old Mystic Fire Department.

Even parents who pay close attention to their kids can turn away for a second and find theyve fallen out a window.

A lot of people think the screens are enough protection, said Lt. Parker. Theyre not. They keep the bugs out but they dont stop a person from falling out.

Limit latches on replacement windows can help by stopping a window from opening up all the way but a very strong child might be able to force the window open.

As soon as its open and this contact breaks it sets off an alarm thats very loud, said Nick Wrobel with Cash True Value in East Lyme. He says window alarms can add another layer of safety.

Security locks and L brackets can also stop a window in its track. This would stop it from lifting because its mounted into the wood in the wall so its gonna be strong, explains Wrobel.

Window security guards are also a strong option. Wrobel says they allow you to mount expandable steel bars in the opening.

For child safety this is kind of the ultimate solution as far as still being able to use the window to let in air but not letting anything out, said Wrobel.

If you have furniture next to a window you should move it away so the kids dont have easy access to the windows. For those who have double hung windows they may want to open the top half to let the air in for ventilation and leave the bottom half closed.

It sure seems that she and the clerk have an agenda and no other board members are allowed to have another opinion. Onions: Why in the world is there still a stop sign where Parkville Road meets 102 by the C.N. tracks? No traffic can come from the west because of a rock blockade and striped barricades. Take that stop sign down already!

Onions: To the Minnesota D.M.V. and their high license plate fees. To add insult to injury, when you buy a new vehicle you dont get a full year out of your new plates. I bought a new vehicle on March 31. When my new plates came Feb. was the expiration month. They charged me almost $400 for 11 months. They cheated me out of one full month. That is wrong.

Orchids: Here is some information the Gilbert City Council can use. A friend told me, that because of Minntac. Mountain Iron receives about an extra $300,000 in grants every year for the IRRRB to spend on city improvements. Gilbert has an Arcelor-Mittal taconite mine to the northeast. Gilbert should also get a large amount of extra yearly grant money for the IRRRB. The Gilbert City Council should do some inquiring real soon to receive its share of extra taconite grant money.

Orchids: A colorful palette of Orchids to Marion DeLage for opening up Art Expressions art studio in Biwabik. She has created a beautiful place for everyone to come to and try their hand at creating personal treasures. Everyone is welcome and even if you dont think you have any artistic abilities, Marion will be there to help you create a memorable piece to share with friends and family. Orchids: Bags and bags full of orchids to Miners, Inc., and their Super One stores in Biwabik and Virginia for collecting plastic bags and then shipping them to a center where they are recycled and processed. Not just collected and thrown into the local landfill.

Orchids: What a wonderful show!! The Country show at Mountain Iron School on the 2nd Saturday of every month for $7. 2 1/2 hours of great local entertainment. The Band (40 Below) and Bittersweet were great. Mark your calenders for this entertainment every month. To visit with friends and neighbors and listen to great music. The Saturday night live gives monies to our local music departments at the schools. (Submitted by Donna Perrault).
