    Demolition Reviews – Metacritic

    - November 29, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

Grief is a funny thing; its affects on people change not only the person experiencing such a powerful and life-altering emotion, but it changes the way people around you view you, and the choices people make around you. One of the many emotions and reflections that the film allowed me to analyze was, thankfully for myself, the lack of grief that I have had to experience in my life thus far, and the amount of grief stricken in the world around me, with numerous people who have directly dealt with lose first-hand in my life everyday.

Jean-Marc Valle, the director of many heavy-handed drama films like C.R.A.Z.Y., The Young Victoria, The Dallas Buyers Club, Caf de Flore and Wild, really loves to make movies with heavy use of symbolism. In his newest directorial effort, Demolition, the symbolism for the deconstruction of Davis life, played unflinchingly by the always stellar Jake Gyllenhaal, really doesnt hold back its explicit nature. Living an overall numb life from the moment we meet him, Davis seems to live each and everyday with very little to almost no real, pure emotions. Rather, explaining the paths of his life with monotone vigour, including the timeline of his wifes life, their meeting, and ultimately, her tragic death, Davis becomes avery difficult man to like, in all aspects of his life.

Whats funny about Demolition is, the films life begins with Julias (Heather Lind) death. In some of the very first and brief scenes of the film, we see Julia and Davis interact, almost as any other couple would; comfortable, passively and without much conviction. What starts off as a simple conversation in the car between husband and wife, quickly turns deadly, as the car is hit, Davis is bloody in a hospital waiting room with his in-laws Fil and Margot (Chris Cooper and Polly Draper) waiting on the news of his wifes fate. As we see in the trailer, Julia never makes it. Fortunately for us, Valle has an amazing way of allowing audiences to see an obscure and unexplored perspective on so many moments we come to expect to see in film, and turns them on its head. For example, after the news of Julias death, Davis makes his way into the operating room where his wife once laid. The room, empty and full of blood on the floors, white operating sheets and medical tools used to attempt to save her life, is one of the first very poignant images Valle has become famous with offering, giving perspective on the very real images of life, more specifically, on a moment many people never really see or associate with death on a hospital bed; an empty bed with nothing but blood and shattered prayers.

As the early reviews of this film began to flood online after its initial premiere and choice as the opening night film for TIFF 40 in 2015, Demolition has seem to be one universally accepted film to divide people. Going into the film, I was wondering why. I mean, Gyllenhaal is one of the supreme acting forces of our young generation, Valle is an excellent storyteller and director, and the supporting cast and crew is nothing short of talented, yet, the film, scripted by Bryan Sipe tells a very discombobulated tale of one manys very operatic struggle to cope with one of two things; the death of his wife, or the realization that he was never in love with the woman he was married to. The film begins to show, not why, but, all the ifs in Davis life.

At times, do not get me wrong, Valles film is nothing short of emotional. But the emotions cannot be ignored to being very manipulative, using scenes of loss and confusion to justify erratic behaviour of characters whose backstories are mostly absent to us. For one, Davis, we come to the understanding early, suffers from common emotional displays of affection and genuine love, yet, without spoiling the ending of the film, does offer many questions to the audiences. Why does he choose a path of destruction for answers? What are his obsessions with others? Why is he fascinated with certain people and not others? The film, which is suppose to be a very realistic, post-trauma film humanizing the loss and pain people feel during times of distress and disbelief, becomes a very segregated film about the pains and struggles about real people, living very real lives, doing very cinematically pleasing things. One of my biggest peeves with the film is showing too much about the stress and grief of Davis loss, and less with the understanding why he is like this, who he was before and what he was like when he was married.

Among his loss, Davis begins a courtship with a vending machine early on, well, maybe not with the machine itself, but with the people behind the operating and handling of the vending machine services. After a slew of personal letters that are suppose to help him express his emotions on paper, Davis begins writing personal complain letters to Champion Vending due to the lack of delivery of his M&Ms ten prior to his wifes death.

Detroit Demolition Program | City of Detroit MI

    - November 29, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

How to use the Detroit Demolition Tracker:

Here are some key facts about the city's demolition program:

The majority of demolition work in Detroit is funded through federal Hardest Hit Fund (HHF) dollars, which can be spent only in federally-approved areas of the city. Under this program, Detroit can demolish publicly-owned residential buildings (four units or fewer) that are in poor or structurally-deficient condition, and are negatively impacting neighborhoods.

The City also conducts emergency demolitions of privately-owned residential buildings ifDetroit building officials determine theypose an immediate threat to public safety, as well as thedemolition of vacant and dangerous commercial structures.

The vast majority of all demolitions by the city is done using federal Hardest Hit Funds (HHF), which, by law, can be spent only in federally-designated areas of the city. This map shows the HHF zones where the city currently can spend its federal allocation of money. The city is constantly pursuing additional federal funds to allow it to further expand these HHF zones to include more neighborhoods.

The Nuisance Abatement Program (NAP) boundaries indicate areas where the city has taken legal action against the owners of vacant properties to compel them to either fix up the house within six months, or transfer the title to the DetroitLand Bank Authority (DLBA), which will put them on a track for eitherauction or demolition, depending on the property's condition. Federal HHF funds can be used only on structures owned by the DLBA.

Demolition begins on illegal Lunada Bay Boys’ illegal patio

    - November 29, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

In a move city officials say is a step toward making Lunada Bay welcoming for visitors, demolition began Monday on a patio built illegally on the shoreline more than 30 years ago.

The patio has become a focal point in an ongoing debate over surfing localism in Palos Verdes Estates. Feelings are mixed as to whether tearing down the patio which some have dubbed a fort will do anything to curb the aggressive behavior of some local surfers.

PHOTOS: Lunada Bay patio demolition begins

The structure gained notoriety as the stomping ground for a group of local surfers known as the Bay Boys, which has been accused of using aggressive and sometimes violent tactics to keep outsiders away from the bay. A class-action lawsuit filed earlier this year accused the group of being a criminal gang.

The patio was the site of an incident referenced in the lawsuit in which one of the local surfers allegedly exposed himself and sprayed a can of beer onto one of the plaintiffs.

Palos Verdes Estates Mayor Jennifer King said the illegal patio and surfing localism are two separate issues, but lauded the demolition as a demonstration of the fact that the citys coastline is open to everyone.

We do think that its a positive step toward just reinforcing our commitment to having open space and to inviting the public to enjoy our coastline, she said.

She added that the citys Police Department will continue to follow up on any reports of violence or property damage. Earlier this month, the city approved a plan to contract with the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department and Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy to bring in additional law enforcement officers to patrol Lunada Bay.

Manhattan Beach resident Danny Klein watched from the blufftop as a helicopter lowered equipment down to the shoreline. Klein said he has faced harassment from local surfers when he has trekked down the slim, steep trail from the bluffs above the bay down to the waters edge. That has never kept him away from the large waves that curve toward the edge of the bay, but hes seen it keep other surfers out of the water. And tearing down the patio wont do anything to stop that, he said.

Theres been flashpoints where the press has been involved in the past and people have been seriously hurt and nothings changed, Klein said.

Once the attention to the structure dies down, Klein said, it will be back to business as usual in the now-infamous surf spot.

They have this structure thats evolved over the last 40 years and its going to come down and its not going to stop them. Its still going to be their spot, theyre still going to surf here, theyre still going to do their thing and theyll rebuild it after all this attention goes away.

King, however, said the increased publicity surrounding Lunada Bay, coupled with the citys management of its coastline, will keep another patio from taking the place of the demolished one.

Some Lunada Bay residents said taking down the patio is the wrong move, and will do little to curb any aggressive behavior by surfers. Two residents watching the start of the demolition said theyre not sure dismantling it will solve the problem.

We dont want them to take it down. It gives (the bay) character and I dont think its hurting anybody, said Lunada Bay resident Heidi W., who didnt want to give her last name. I think its more intrusive to have all these trucks and people here and news coverage than it is to just have the little thing made out of rock.

Kathy H., another Lunada Bay resident who didnt want her full name used, said the demolition will only draw more people to the bay and lead to more issues.

(The demolition is) going to invite more people to come down here to cause more trouble, she said.

The patio was built into the base of the cliff roughly 30 years ago, and has been expanded over the years to include stone steps, a barbecue area, a palm frown canopy and a stone table.

The City Council voted in July to tear down the patio, citing potential liability issues if someone were injured on the roughly 300-square-foot deck.

The demolition will continue throughout the week and most likely be finished by Friday. In addition to the main patio, a smaller structure to the south was set to be demolished Monday, and the larger patio was slated to be torn down today and Wednesday.

VIDEO: Crew begins dismantling surfers patio

The project includes the use of a helicopter that touched down Monday to fly large pieces of equipment from the bluffs above the bay to the shoreline below. Later in the week, it will be used again to transport debris back up from the beach.

10 Things You Must Know About Retaining Walls – DIY Com

    - November 29, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

    1. Incorporate the Wall Into Your Lifestyle

Retaining walls are usually thought of as utilitarian and for merely holding back soil. But you can use them to create beautiful outdoor living spaces and incorporate multi-use spaces.

Retaining walls don't have to be perfectly straight. Add a curve to dress up a boring straight wall and to add a little more texture to your landscape. You can use a garden hose or large rope to set the layout of the curve, then use a shovel to cut through the soil to follow the curve.

Smaller retaining walls, such as those less than four feet, can be easily planned and created without worrying too much about structure. Larger walls above that height may need an engineer's touch. Also be sure to check with local codes before starting one more than four feet tall.

From a lower grade, you'll need to gradually step up the retaining wall to reach a greater slope. Do this in increments and plan for a slight offset for each course change.

Besides offering a consistent look, manufactured blocks and stones for retaining walls offer structural integrity and an even base with which to work. There is little guesswork in installing, plus you'll have less work to do making sure each course is level. Be sure to color match and space out uneven colored stones and blocks for a better look.

Dig out your base several inches below grade and tamp/compact it to level. Add any filler, such as gravel, before adding your first stones or blocks. Remember, the base sets the tone for the entire wall, so spend a lot of time in preparing this key component.

A retaining wall that has a slope dropping to it will need additional drainage at the base. Add gravel and a fabric-covered drainage pipe at the base. The fabric will help prevent clogging of the pipe — a key feature as you will not want to dig out the pipe later to unclog it.

For each course of stones and blocks, be sure to check for level. This will help maintain a sturdy and balanced wall, plus you'll keep an even and consistent look.

Backfilling as you go adds support in success layers, so as you add a new course of blocks or stones, backfill to match this level. Be sure to tamp in/compact the soil as well, so you don't have as much settling later.

Add cap blocks to the top row of a block or stone retaining wall. You can add a layer of masonry adhesive to hold them in place, then back fill. Or you can backfill as you go, then add the cap. Either way, it provides a nice finished look, much like edging added to a paver patio.
