A metal roof is a roofing system made from metal pieces or tiles. It is a component of the building envelope. One of the main disadvantages of a metal roof is the noise created when it rains outside.
Copper has played a significant role in architecture for thousands of years (see: copper in architecture). In the 3rd century B.C., copper roof shingles were installed atop the Lovamahapaya Temple in Sri Lanka.[1] The Romans used copper as roof covering for the Pantheon in 27 B.C.[2] Centuries later, copper and its alloys were integral in European medieval architecture. The copper roof of St. Mary's Cathedral, Hildesheim, installed in 1280 A.D., survived until its destruction during bombings in World War II.[3] The roof at Kronborg, one of northern Europe's most important Renaissance castles (immortalized as Elsinore Castle in Shakespeares Hamlet) was installed in 1585 A.D.[4] The copper on the tower was renovated in 2009.[5]
Metal roofs can last up to 100 years, with installers providing 50 year warranties.[6] Because of their longevity, most metal roofs are less expensive than asphalt shingles in the long term.[7]
Metal roofing can consist of a high percentage of recycled material and is 100% recyclable.[8] It does not get as hot as asphalt, a common roofing material, and it reflects heat away from the building underneath in summertime. On a larger scale, its use reduces the heat island effect of cities when compared to asphalt. Coupled with its better insulating abilities, metal roofs can offer not only a 40% reduction in energy costs in the summer, but also up to a 15% reduction in the energy costs in the winter according to a 2008 Study by Oak Ridge National Laboratory. This finding is based on the use of a strapping system of four inches between the plywood and "cool-color" metal on top,[9] which provides an air gap between the plywood roof and the metal. Cool-color metals are light, reflective colors, like white. The study went on to say that re-sealing and insulating air ducts in the attic will save even more money.[10]
Originally, metal roofs were made of corrugated galvanized steel: a wrought ironsteel sheet was coated with zinc and then roll-formed into corrugated sheets. Another approach is to blend zinc, aluminum, and silicon-coated steel. These products are sold under various trade names like "Zincalume" or "Galvalume". The surface may display the raw zinc finish, or it may be used as a base metal under factory-coated colors. Another metal roofing product comes in a rolled form of various widths of so-called standing seam metal. The material is "seamed" together using a special seaming tool that is run vertically up the panel to seal the joints and prevent water intrusion.[11]
Metal tile sheets can also be employed. These are usually painted or stone-coated steel. Stone coated steel roofing panels are made from zinc/aluminium-coated steel with an acrylic gel coating. The stones are usually a natural product with a colored ceramic coating. Stainless steel is another option. It is usually roll-formed into standing seam profiles for roofing; however, individual shingles are also available. Other metals used for roofing are lead, tin and aluminium and copper.
Copper is used for roofing because it offers corrosion resistance, durability, long life, low maintenance, radio frequency shielding, lightning protection, and sustainability benefits. Copper roofs are often one of the most architecturally distinguishable features of prominent buildings, including churches, government buildings, and universities.[12] Today, copper is used in not only in roofing systems, but also for flashings and copings, rain gutters and downspouts, domes, spires, vaults, and various other architectural design elements. At the Lyle Center for Regenerative Studies in Pomona, California, copper was chosen for the roofing on regenerative principles: if the building were to be dismantled the copper could be reused because of its high value in recycling and its variety of potential uses. A vented copper roof assembly at Oak Ridge National Laboratories (U.S.) substantially reduced heat gain compared with stone-coated steel shingle (SR246E90) or asphalt shingle (SR093E89), resulting in lower energy costs.[13]
Several different types of coatings are used on metal panels to prevent rust, provide waterproofing, or reflect heat. They are made of various materials such as epoxy and ceramic.
Ceramic coatings can be applied on metal roof materials to add heat-reflective properties. Most ceramic coatings are made from regular paint with ceramic beads mixed in as an additive.
Coatings are sometimes applied to copper.[14][15] Clear coatings preserve the natural color, warmth, and metallic tone of copper alloys. Oils exclude moisture from copper roofs and flashings and simultaneously enhance their appearance by bringing out a rich luster and depth of color. The most popular oils are lemon oil, U.S.P., lemongrass oil, Native E.I., paraffin oils, linseed oil, and castor oil. On copper roofing or flashing, reapplication once every three years can effectively retard patina formation. In arid climates, the maximum span between oilings may be extended up to five years. Opaque paint coatings are primarily applied over copper when substrate integrity and longevity are desired but a specific color other than the naturally occurring copper hues is required.[16] Lead-coated copper coatings are used when the appearance of exposed lead is desired or where water runoff from uncoated copper alloys would ordinarily stain lighter-colored building materials, such as marble, limestone, stucco, mortar, or concrete.[17] Zinc-tin coatings are an alternative to lead coatings since they have approximately the same appearance and workability.[18][19]

Preparing/Protecting The Job Area
Some general suggestions for preparing the job area:
Make sure you have a clean, organized work area. Block it off from children and pets. Identify and avoid all site danger areas, such as dangerous power lines, unsafe roof access areas, and underground hazards (such as cesspools and power lines).
Remove wall hangings as well as any loose items from walls and shelves. Use tarps to avoid damaging plants and shrubs. Park any cars or other vehicles away from the driveway and a safe distance from the construction area. Disable any sprinkler systems. Cover any pools and hot tubs, and remove any other sensitive items around the house that might be damaged by falling roofing debris.
Nothing is more important in roofing than preparing the surface under the shingles. With a roof tear-off, when the old materials are removed, youll have a clean deck that allows you to see any potential problems that need to be fixed. This could range from rotten wood to cracked boards to an unsound deck that wont hold nails as well.
For the proper methods for tearing off a roof and preparing the roof deck, see our How-To-Video .
The proper installation of high-quality roof deck protection like Deck-Armor Premium Breathable Roof Deck Protection, Shingle-Mate Roof Deck Protection, or Tiger Paw Roof Deck Protection is the foundation on which a good roof system is built.
See our How-to Video for installing premium deck protection .
View application instructions for roof deck protection products.
Protect your investment and safeguard vulnerable areas of your roof with GAFs proven leak barriers.

One of the most common sources of failure in a roof system is the improper installation of starter shingles. This starter course is very important, especially for wind resistance. Starter strip shingles are the first line of defense against wind uplift along the edges of a roof. GAF offers pre-cut WeatherBlocker Premium Eave/Rake Starter Strip Shingles and Pro-Start Starter Strips.
For the proper installation technique for starter strip shingles, see our How-To Video.
Nailing errors, such as under-driven or angled nails, can cause future problems with your shingleseverything from premature failure and blistering to blow-offs. Nail type, location, length, angle, and force of application are all critical to consider when installing shingles. Its important to take your time when installing nails to ensure the job is done correctly.
For the proper shingle nailing technique, see our How-To Video.
Timberline Shingles with Advanced Protection Technology are the #1-selling shingles in all of North America. Timberline Shingles will not only protect your most valuable assettheyll beautify your home for years to come.

Installing Designer Shingles
Maximizing your propertys visual appeal with Lifetime Designer Shingles from GAF can be exciting, funand a smart investment.

Valleys are one of the areas of roofing that takes careful planning and time to install correctly. Valleys are a prime leak area, so its important to be precise during installation.
See our How-to Video for installing valleys..
Wherever surfaces intersect on a roof, there is a chance of water seepage. Flashing is highly recommended for waterproofing these critical areas of your roof.
See our How-to Video for installing flashing and details.
Proper ventilation is critical for helping to reduce hot and moist air in your attic space that can damage your possessions, increase your energy costs, and potentially reduce the longevity of your roofing system. The Federal Housing Authority in the U.S. the Engineered Wood Association, many national building codes, and all major roofing manufacturers require the installation of attic ventilation. GAF offers one of the industrys most comprehensive line of ridge vents .
Installing ridge vents requires working on some of the highest parts of your roofthe ridges. Always utilize proper safety equipment to prevent falls or injury when installing ridge vents on your roof. See our Safety section for more details.
Deciding on the proper vent and the amount of ventilation needed is critical. Consult your local building code for balanced attic ventilation requirements in your area. Once you decide on the type of vent that is needed and how much to install, always ensure you install the vent as per written application instructions. Be careful not to cut any attic rafters or wires, and always ensure to properly fasten the vent to prevent blow-off or weather infiltration.
See our How-to Video for installing ridge vents.
Hip or ridge cap shingles are not only a great finishing touch to your roof, they are also a critical piece of your roof system that helps to protect some of the highest stress and vulnerable areas on your roof. GAF offers premium ridge cap shingles designed to match your GAF laminated shingles.
Installing hip or ridge shingles requires working on some of the highest parts of your roofthe hips and ridges. Always utilize proper safety equipment to prevent falls or injury when installing hip or ridge shingles on your roof.

Professional roofing contractors develop specialized techniques and equipment for keeping the jobsite clean. Tackling the job on your own, you can adopt some of these practices as well. Some quick tips are to shelter and protect bushes and plants that might be affected by material dropping from the roof, and to use a tarp to catch as much material as possible. Many roofing contractors follow a completed job by running a magnet over the "drop zone" to collect any nails that might have escaped.
Also see our section on Recycling and Waste Disposal .
Realistically, do-it-yourself roofing can take a lot of time and effort. It depends on various factors, such as your level of experience, the size of your roof, whether or not you need to do a complete tear-off of the existing roof, how much preparation your roof deck needs, and how many people are assisting you. Since its important not to leave your roof unprotected for any length of time, you must allow at least several uninterrupted days in a row to work on the project.
Keep in mind that a professional roofing contractor with a crew will finish the job more quickly and efficiently.

Aspenmark Roofing & Solar, which provides top-notch roof maintenance and replacement in Dallas, TX, has been a GAF Master Elite Contractor since 2009. To become a Master Elite Contractora status that less than 2% of roofing contractors nationwide have achieveda candidate must demonstrate proper licensing and adequate insurance, have a proven reputation and show commitment to ongoing professional training.
What do you call a contractor who is always striving to say yes to customers, has founded its own roofing charity to give back to the communities it serves, and produces wines through its own Napa Valley vineyard? Some may use the term customer-centric, others may say innovative, while others simply call it Aspenmark Roofing & Solar. Were one of the good guys, according to Chris Zazo, Chief Executive Officer. In an industry where good service is hard to find, we deliver everything in a positive fashion to find whats best for the customer. We make our homeowners and commercial building owners feel like part of the Aspenmark family.
The company is dedicated to providing white-glove service. Our trucks are clean, states Zazo. Our people follow a dress code. Trucks and shirts alike display our logo. When were on the job, were taking care of and in custody of someones homeso we ensure that we give customers the respect they deserve. We pride ourselves on that reputation.
Aspenmark utilizes modern technology in all aspects of its daily work. We give our presentations on iPads, and we have access to all the technical information on the GAF side. Our pricing is readily available, so we have a real-time quoting model. On top of all this, we employ an expert social-media strategy that delivers on-going value to our customers. Homeowners can find great roofing resources on our Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn pages, which are proving to be great ways to interact with customers. The company also utilizes cutting-edge weather technology through the National Storm Damage Center, a contractor network that shares information and job leads outside of contractors home markets.
In partnership with Dallas Habitat for Humanity, Aspenmark has founded its own charity, called Roof Angels, says Zazo. We provide roofing for veterans, for people without insurance, or anyone who cant afford it, really. Its been a big hit since we launched last year. The charity work has also helped engage our employees through service to others, which ultimately reinforces our overall approach to doing business, so its really had a ripple effect throughout our company. Studies have shown that this type of program increases employee retention. It helps with morale and keeping people together. Aspenmark also plans to roof 40 homes for Habitat for Humanity in 2016.
And lets not forget about the wine Thats on the fun side, says Zazo. Because so much of our living comes from repairing hail damage, we named our winery Hailstone Vineyards. Its quality Napa wine, and were very proud of it. It started as a customer appreciation thing, but now its got some distribution throughout the country and is even served at some high-end restaurants. Its actually another sign of how we do things at Aspenmark: first-rate and with class.
Looking toward the future, Zazo concludes: Were on a path of continuing to grow and build on our reputation and credentials, aided in large part by our great partners and distributors. Working as a network and a family, they really make us look like stars!

If replacing a damaged window, be careful to avoid jagged glass. Center the new window in the opening, supporting it with wood blocks and shims placed below the horizontal jambs. Make sure the window is plumb and level, and adjust the shims if necessary.
Clamp or have a friend hold the moulding in place. If you have vinyl or aluminum siding, you may need to install a J-channel to hold the trim.
Use a circular saw adjusted so the blade depth equals the thickness of the siding. Start the cut with the toe of the saw plate on the siding, but with the blade and heel of the plate above the surface. Slide the saw guard back, start the saw, and ease the blade into the wood. To avoid splintering, stop before the corner. Complete the corner cuts with a sharp chisel.
Cut a length of drip edge to fit over the top of the window, then slide it between the siding and the building paper.
If it has brick mold, apply a continuous bead of caulk around the opening. If it has a nailing fin, apply the caulk to the back of the fin.
Set the window into the opening and push the brick mold or nailing fin tight against the sheathing.
Check to see how much adjustment will be necessary to level and plumb the window unit.
On a level window with brick mold, tack it in place by predrilling and then driving 16d casing nails partway into the top corners of the moulding. If the window is uneven, correct it by shimming below the side jambs and then tacking in place.
Despite the nails you just put in, the window will still move somewhat. Use the shims to center the window in the opening.
Measure the diagonals of the window. If they are equal, the window is square. If not, adjust the shims until the window is square. Always recheck for level and square after you adjust the shims.
If the window has a brick mold, predrill holes in it and drive 16d nails through it and into the framing. If the window has a nailing fin, nail through it into the framing. In either case, start at the corners and space the remaining nails as recommended by the manufacturer. Drive all nail heads below the wood surface with a nail set.
A window with a nailing fin often has a special-order moulding that you apply over it. Install as directed by the manufacturer.
Fill the gaps between the window jambs and the framing members with loosely packed fiberglass insulation.
Trim the shims flush with the framing by scoring them with a utility knife and then snapping off the excess.
Apply paintable silicone caulk around the entire window unit and fill the nail holes with caulk. When the caulk dries, paint to match the trim on the rest of your house.

Lay out several rows of loose boards along the length of the floor, following your plan. Mix boards from several bundles to avoid noticeable color changes from one bundle to another. Arrange lengths, wood-grain patterns and variations in board colors to create a balanced look. To avoid confusion when installing random-width strips or planks, lay out the boards in alternating courses based on width.
Choose long boards for the first row and align them along your chalk line with the board tongues facing out toward the center of the room (image 1). Place the first board in the row so that its groove end aligns with the chalk line at the end wall. Be sure there is a 1/2-inch gap between this row and both the side and end walls.
The first row needs to be face nailed. To prevent the wood from splitting, drill pilot holes along the gap edge every 10 to 12 inches then top-nail the starter course with 10d finishing nails (image 2). Try to make sure they go through the sub-floor and into the floor joists. Use a nail set to sink the nail heads slightly below the wood surface (image 3). Secure this row by blind-nailing or stapling through the tongue joint with the power nailer.
After the first row is firmly attached, begin at one end and use the power nailer to install the next row of boards (image 4). If the boards dont fit together easily, use a mallet with a scrap piece of flooring as a tapping block to knock them into place (image 5). Be careful not to damage the edges or board surfaces. Install one complete row at a time from end-wall to end-wall. Place at least two nails in every board the rule of thumb is to nail every 10 to 12 inches.
Flooring is typically bundled in random lengths. Vary board lengths as you install so you will have staggered end-joints in a random pattern (image 6). Avoid repeating patterns a repetitive joint pattern can result in a weaker floor. Installers recommend staggering end-joints a minimum of 6 inches for narrow-strip flooring, 8 to 10 inches for planks that are up to 5 inches wide, and 10 inches or more for wider planks. When a row approaches an end wall, select final pieces that will be a minimum of 12 inches long. Dont forget to leave a 1/2-inch gap at the wall. Measure and cut off the ends, then use these cutoffs with their tongues or grooves intactas starter pieces for the next row.
Do not attempt to cut boards to length within the floor pattern. Flooring strips have chamfered edges to help them lay flat where they meet. Cut boards to fit only at the end of a row where refinishing the board ends is not necessary.
Make sure each board is locked tightly against the preceding row, because even a small gap can cause the entire floor to be off. Any variation must be corrected when and where it appears. Gaps between boards can be caused by misalignment, poorly milled edges, wood splinters in the grooves and other obstructions. If you have a gap, pry out and discard the board, eliminate the damage or obstruction and reinstall a new board.
When installing up to a threshold, it is not critical to cut each rows end to an exact length. After the floor is complete, you can use a circular saw to cut across the ends for a precise fit.
As you near a wall or other obstacle, clearance for the flooring nailer may be restricted. Where necessary, drill pilot holes and hand-nail the boards, blind-nailing through the tongue joint if possible, or face-nail and set the nail heads below the board surface.
Where the final row meets the wall, it may be necessary to rip boards lengthwise to fit. Narrow end boards are usually hidden by base molding.

Our BIRCHES & MAPLES are lighter and brighter with less mineral stains and sapwood for a whiter color.
Our RED OAK is lighter and more uniform in color with less mineral stains.
Our CHERRY is free of green color, has more red, less sap and fewer occurrences of gum deposits.
It is the nature of real hardwood to have a variety of colors and grain textures. Because these variations are the real natural beauty of hardwood, unusual or wild grain patterns and/or color differences will not constitute a reason for replacement.
