Ever since the invention of Formica in the 1920s, kitchen countertops in America have been simply covered in laminates. During the past decade, though, natural stone surfaces have landed in ever more kitchens: granite, marble, soapstone and even concrete. But now there's a new countertop contender on the design scene: engineered quartz.
Boasting the best qualities of laminate and stone (along with its own special features), quartz began appearing in U.S. homes just a few years ago after gaining popularity in Europe for the past decade. Today, quartz countertops are exploding in popularity, with U.S. sales increasing 60 percent in 2004.
Learn more about the performance of this manufactured surface with the beauty of marble.
Although some quartz countertops are actually made of quarried slabs of the natural stone, the new engineered material is actually created through a manufacturing process that mixes approximately 95 percent ground natural quartz with 5 percent polymer resins. The result is a super-hard, low-maintenance, natural stone-look countertop available in a dazzling array of colors. And for many of the homeowners choosing quartz, those virtually unlimited color options are what sold them.
"Color was most definitely a huge factor," says Gay Lyons, a college professor in Knoxville, Tenn., who replaced the white laminate countertops in the kitchen of her 1970s rancher with blue quartz. "Our kitchen is part of a large area that includes dining and seating areas, as well as an adjacent sunroom. The countertops needed to coordinate with not only what was in the kitchen, but what was in those other areas as well. The color I chose coordinates perfectly."
Joe Everitt, an independent contractor who has spent the last decade remodeling New York City brownstones and lofts, says that homeowners love the fact that quartz allows color choices never before available in stone. But he says the best features of quartz are actually invisible.
"These countertops are close to indestructible," Joe explains. "They're so durable that most manufacturers offer a warranty, something you won't find with, say, granite. And quartz isn't porous like other stone surfaces, so these countertops are much more sanitary in a home kitchen. You can keep them 99.9 percent bacteria-free."
This durability also means that, unlike other types of stone countertops, quartz resists staining or corrosion from cooking oils, liquids and most household cleaning products so there's no need for periodic resealing of the surface. Quartz can be damaged by excessive heat, however, so homeowners should use trivets or heating pads.

Whats the best material for my countertops? Before you start weighing the pros and cons of a certain material, take a minute to analyze your familys needs and how you plan to use your new bathroom or kitchen counters. If you have children or simply lack the time to take proper care of the more high maintenance materials like marble, it may be best to look for a hardier option. With that in mind, take a moment to consider the color options, availability, finishes and care requirements for each choice: Granite: Perhaps the most popular choice, thanks to its wide variety of colors and unique patterns, the cost of granite counters depends largely on the availability of your pattern and color of choice. If its a more common style that doesnt have to be shipped from overseas or specially requested, granite can be an affordable option. Keep in mind youll need to ensure its properly sealed and dont forget to pick your finish! Quartz: Quartz or solid surface counters are very durable and require little maintenance. If the surface becomes scratched or scuffed, it can simply be buffed out with fine-grade sandpaper. This hardy choice can also handle high heat from pots and pans or even curling irons, plus it has anti-microbial qualities. Concrete: Leave the drab visions of gray, gray and more gray behind. Concrete countertops can be customized with a pigment of your choice, and different finishes can up the ante by revealing texture and veining. A trowel finish leaves the concrete looking smooth and seamless, while a ground finish unveils the texture of sand aggregate. A pressed finish will reveal veining that resembles that of marble. Keep in mind youll need to seal your concrete countertop up to four times a year and wax it every two to three months. Butcher block: This option is easy to clean and provides the best cutting surface to keep your knives sharp for a longer period of time. Scratches and scuffs can be carefully sanded out, but youll want to oil your wood countertops often to keep them in prime condition. Laminate: Your most affordable choice, laminate countertops feature a huge selection of colors and designs, including those that mimic the look of granite and quartz. If you choose laminate, be wary of placing any hot pans directly on the surface as it can scorch easily. Soapstone: A beautiful choice, soapstone may not be able to stand up to heavy-duty tasks. Soapstone and similar natural stone materials like marble and limestone are softer than granite, which means theyll require greater care to keep them in tiptop shape. Their porous quality also means theyll be more susceptible to stains. Can I add a decorative edge to my bathroom or kitchen countertops? Depending on what material you choose, you may have a few options when it comes to a decorative edge. Of course, the standard square edge can look elegant in a modern kitchen or bathroom, but dont be afraid to add some flair with a beveled edge. A radius edge will round out those corners for a softer look, while an ogee edge expands on the beveled style with layers of deep beveling. Bullnose edges are similar to a radius edge but feature a flatter, softer top edge.

Create a small-scale, smooth-functioning hub with savvy space planning and chic style.
In a small New York City apartment reflective glass mosaics create an appealing focal point, distracting the eye momentarily from the size of the space. Design by Jason Landau ; photography by Peter Krupenye
Kitchens have morphed into multifunctional hubs where families gather to cook, entertain, pay bills, plan schedules, do homework and watch TV. But not everyone has enough square footage to serve all those functions and circulate comfortably.
Some kitchens, particularly those in walkable urban locations, may be long skinny galleys or tiny boxlike rectangles. That doesnt mean you cant cook together, house favorite equipment, sit, eat and make your space look stunning. You just have to do so on a smaller scale with smart planning and prioritizing. Here's how:
Budget smartly on cabinets and shelves. Cabinets are key to smart kitchen layouts and happy cooks. But because cabinets represent the biggest outlay of dollars for most remodeling jobs, about 50 percent to 60 percent, you should think hard about how many you want and really need.
Optimize storage. Having enough room for everything can be tricky with so many tempting gadgets. Heres how to find space:
David Young-Wolff
Designer Erica Islas of EMI Interior Design found room for a tiny round table by a window seat, almost like a Paris cafe.
Find space for an eating area. Tables gobble up kitchen real estate fast. Be sure to have 3 between a table and base cabinets for circulation. Add a peninsula or island where you can eat, use a rolling island, or knock down a wall between your kitchen and dining room, suggest designers Katie and Ruben Gutierrez of Errez Design.
You may have enough wasted space nearby that can be converted. A small 10 by 10 kitchen in a 1920s Miami house didnt have room for a table, but the Gutierrezes found a 6 by 7 laundry room that could also work with a banquette.
Expand your square footage with color and lighting. Here are a few tips for choosing colors and sufficient lighting to complement a room's size.
Accessorize wisely. Keep countertops clear of stuff. Heed conventional real estate wisdom by not leaving out more than three items. Integrate a microwave and coffeemaker into cabinetry; mount a paper towel holder and small TV on a wall; stick a knife block or rack in a deep drawer; organize spices in racks on interior cabinet doors; and group utensils on magnetic wall strips that add instant chef cachet.
Many small kitchens can't fit an island but by making it narrow and using an overhang, Christopher Grubb succeeded. Gray tiles laid on a diagonal expand the space visually. Photography by Greg Weiner
Build an island. Your kitchen island should have at least 3 of clearance on all sides to walk around, suggests designer Chris Berry, ASID, owner of brooksBerry & Associates Ltd. For comfort, go with 4 or 5 for stools to be pushed back, if there are appliances or cabinets behind. Most small-kitchen islands arent big enough to include two levels and also would look out of scale.
If you have room for an island, make it work hard. Add storage on the back side by appliances. Hide outlets with a strip of plug mold that you tuck underneath the countertop overhang or with a flip-down cover, so the island surfaces becomes another work area, says Clendenon. If the top is big enough, maybe, add an extra or even the main sink.
Keep the island in similar colors and materials to the rest of the room to make the room appear less choppy. There should also be fewer bold details: one type of handle on drawers or cabinets, one color or pattern, few distracting embellishments like brackets, corbels or furniture feet. Consider instead a small movable cart that can roll into another room.

TEMPLE, Texas (KWTX) The owners of a historic downtown Temple building are planning to bring new life into the area with a multi-shop retail space called The Hub.
It will house specialty shops, local artists and even an ice cream parlor.
Renovation is already underway for the $700,000 project on South 2nd Street in downtown Temple.
Joe Shepperd is one of the owners of the space.
"We felt like downtown would support more than what it has now, Shepperd said.
Shepperd and the managing partner of The Hub, Holly Gosh, say it will be a space for local shops, entrepreneurs, and artists to showcase their talents in a unique atmosphere.
Gosh said the first floor of the 16,000 square foot space will feature a boutique space for fashion, home goods, and ice cream parlor, and even an event area.
The second floor will house the work of local artists.
The Hub will hold nearly 40 different businesses and artisans.
We want to create a destination, so people can come downtown and spend more than just ten minutes in one shop, Gosh said.
The Hub will receive grant funding from the Temple Economic Development Corporation and the City of Temple.
Charley Ayres is Vice President of the Temple Economic Development Corporation, and he says converting the building that used to sit empty will benefit the people.
"Now, we're going to have an establishment that comes into this building that will generate sales tax, that can go back into the community, Ayres said.
According to Ayres, an estimated 38,000 people go to downtown Temple every day.
Shepperd and Gosh hope this project will kick-start even more business and activity in downtown Temple.
The estimated completion date for The Hub is mid-October.
