The Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) – Installation Standards …

    - May 18, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

The industrys gold standard resource for commercial and residential carpet installation, the CRI 104 and 105 standards provide installers, retailers, specification writers and building owners with detailed principles and guidelines for carpet installation.

Representing more than 25 years of information-gathering and installation expertise, CRIs 104 and 105 carpet installation standards are the only carpet installation standards created and supported by the industry.

In 2015, the CRI convened industry leaders to update the 104 and 105 standards to address innovations that require new approaches to carpet installation, particularly planning and subfloor preparation. These changes reflect the industrys ongoing dedication to quality and customer satisfaction.

CRI offers both standards as a free download:

CRI 104 Installation Standard (Commercial) (PDF 704 KB)

CRI 105 Installation Standard (Residential) (PDF 700 KB)

    Understanding Different Installation Methods

Stretch-in Installation: There are situations in which a specifier will wish to utilize the stretch-in method. Its selection may be for one of the following reasons:

Stretch-in installations should be avoided in the following cases:

    Direct glue-down installation:

Double glue-down installation: This method combines the stability of direct glue-down carpet with the cushioning benefits of a separate cushion, stretch-in installation, as outlined below:

The intention of the Americans with Disabilities Act is to ensure that people with disabilities have access to employment, public accommodations, government services, transportation, telecommunications and commercial facilities.

An important consideration is the threshold height between two areas of different surface types. Requirements by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) allow carpet having a pile height of half an inch or less (measured from the bottom of the tuft). Exposed edges should be fastened to floor surfaces with trim along that edge. Carpet with a pile height over a half-inch must have a transition ramp between the surfaces.

The placement of carpet in the affected public areas of commercial facilities places certain obligations on the specifier, building owner and others. Compliance requirements should be thoroughly understood by the specifier. The following section has been excerpted from the ADA requirements:

4.5.1 General. Ground and floor surfaces along accessible routes and in accessible rooms and spaces, including floors, walks, ramps, stairs, and curb ramps, shall be stable, firm, slip-resistant, and shall comply with 4.5.

Changes in level between in and in (6 mm and 13 mm) shall be beveled with a slope no greater than 1:2.

Changes in level greater than in (13 mm) shall be accomplished by means of a ramp that complies with 4.7 or 4.8.

4.5.3 Carpet. If carpet or carpet tile is used on a ground or floor surface, then it shall be securely attached; have a firm cushion, pad, or backing, or no cushion or pad; and have a level loop, textured loop, level cut pile, or level cut/uncut pile be in (13 mm).

Exposed edges of carpet shall be fastened to floor surfaces and have trim along the entire length of the exposed edge. Carpet edge trim shall comply with 4.5.2.

Documents in Portable Document Format (PDF) require the use of the free software Adobe Reader. If you experience difficulty reading a PDF document, please consider upgrading your Adobe Reader software to the latest version, which is available on the Adobe website.

Carpet Installation Cost – Carpet installer labor prices

    - May 18, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

By Alan Fletcher - 30-Year Carpet Expert & Consumer Advocate

I have over 30 years experience in the carpet business and I have personally installed thousands of yards of carpet of every type, style and color. If you want to know how much it's going to cost to hire an independent carpet installer you have come to the right place. Here is the Important Stuff you need to know about...

    Hiring a Qualified Carpet Installer

Bad carpet installers are the easiest to find because they advertise in common places like Craigslist or the service ads in your local newspaper. As with any trade, some carpet installers are not worth hiring because they don't do a good job.

The best installers are the hardest to find and seldom advertise. The best way to find them is through someone who knows them or who has hired them in the past.

You might ask your friends, relatives or co-workers who they would recommend. Even if an installer comes highly recommended, it does not mean the installer is qualified to install your type of carpet for your type of application.

Local retail carpet stores generally will not allow you to hire their installers unless you buy the carpet from them. Carpet retailers often have a difficult time finding and keeping good installers because the best installers are busy enough due to their good reputation alone, and dont need or even want to work for a retail carpet store.

Hiring a Certified Carpet installer is a good way to go and there is a website that you can visit that have lists of Certified installers. Click here and enter your zip code to Locate a CFI Certified Flooring Installer near you.

You can also call the CFI main office for a recommendation at (816) 231-4646

There may be a Carpet Layer's Union in your city. They charge by the hour not by the size of the job or by the yard. Check your local listings. How To Find a Qualified Carpet Installer

    Carpet Installation Cost

How much does it cost to have carpet installed? What can you expect to pay for extra services? Here is what you need to know... There are a lot of variables that homeowners need to consider before the question of carpet installation cost can be accurately answered. There are many different fees and charges you may encounter all depending on your home and the type of carpet you select.

    Installing Carpet On Stairs

For example, if you have a flight of stairs that need to be carpeted you can expect a minimum charge of $75 to $250 for the flight of stairs. That is in addition the the price per square yard to install the carpet. Some installers charge by the stair and if you have spindles from a handrail the cost can be as much as $15 to $25 per stair. A basic set of "box" stairs might cost you an additional $3 to $10 per step. Wrapped stairs require installing carpet over the side of the stairs on one or both sides, increasing the installation cost per stair. Looped Berber carpets are always more costly to install due to the added difficulty in cutting and seaming, so if you have an elaborate staircase requiring major upholstery work AND you are installing a looped Berber carpet - the cost can be much much higher.

    Out with the old...

Tear out and haul away of your old carpet and padding is another charge you may encounter. Some installers charge as much as $3 per yard to take up your old carpet and padding. There may also be a dump fee that you must pay in addition to that. Some homeowners try to save money by removing their old carpet and padding themselves prior to the carpet installers arriving to install the new carpet. Unless you are physically fit and have some basic hand tools you might want to reconsider. It's hard work and you can easily hurt yourself if you are not very careful. If you decide to do this yourself it's important that the jobsite be clean, all furniture moved out, swept out and ready to go before the installers arrive arrive.

Carpet Installation - Extra Fees and Charges

Other carpet installation prices, charges and fees that can add up in a hurry is for floor preparation. If you have squeaky floors and want the installers to screw down the subfloor there will be added costs. If the old tack-less strips are worn out, rusty or damaged they will need to be replaced. If you need new metal transitions there may be added costs depending on what type of transitions you require and the amount of lineal feet you need.

Learn more about Carpet Installation Cost

Charged by the square foot or by the square yard?

Some say it is easier to figure the cost if you use the square foot method. For decades it was always figured by the square yard - but nowadays it can go either way.

There are 9 square feet in 1 square yard, so 900 square feet is the same as 100 square yards. If you multiply the square yards by 9 you get the square feet.

If you divide the square feet by 9 you get the square yards. Most two bedroom homes require 80 to 100 yards. That's about 1000 square feet.

The Cost to Install Carpet depends on the grade of carpet you buy, the area you live in, the experience level of the installer and the size of your job. Most installers have a minimum fee of at least $100, so if you just have a small room to do you can't calculate the cost using the amount of square feet you have. On the other hand, if you have a huge job you might be able to negotiate a better deal. Installers often like doing bigger jobs because they can make more money faster doing one big job than by doing a bunch of small jobs.

How to Measure for Carpet in 4 Simple Steps

How much should YOU pay for Carpet Installation?

In the southern states like Florida, Alabama, Texas and Mississippi the price carpet installers charge is considerable less than in the northern states. Prices per square yard range from $2.50 to $6.50 nationwide with higher prices in the northeastern states and along the west coast. There is no way to give you the going rate in your area so you have to call around and ask a few installers what they charge. They are going to want answers to specific questions so be prepared to answer these:

    How many yards of carpet?

What type or style of carpet?

    Do you have stairs?

    Is there furniture moving?

Is there tear out of the old?

    Have you ordered the carpet?

    Is the carpet in stock?

Who did you buy it from?

    Where is the carpet located?

    What is the order number?

    Where is the padding located?

Scheduling - You want it installed WHEN???

Most carpet installers will not schedule your exact install date until AFTER your new roll of carpet has arrived from the mill. Arrival dates are never to be trusted and it is common for a roll of carpet to arrive weeks later than originally expected. Delays or problems in manufacturing or bad weather can easily delay the arrival of your new carpet.

Kitchen Remodeling – Home Builders in Delaware

    - May 15, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

Montchanin offers premium quality kitchen remodeling throughout Delaware; serving New Castle County, Chester County & the greater Philadelphia metropolitan area.

An estimated 40 percent of homeowners plan to make a home improvement such as a kitchen renovation this year. Repairs are the most commonly cited reason for home improvement, according to a Zillow Digs survey, but nearly a third of homeowners are looking to modernize their homes for greater comfort and functionality. Another 21 percent of homeowners want to increase the value of their homes. According to the survey, nearly 40 percent of homeowners will look for inspiration online at websites like Zillow Digs, Houzz and Pinterest.

While its undoubtedly fun to spend time daydreaming and searching desirable aesthetics online, nothing beats the personalized experience of working with a builder for your kitchen remodeling needs. Researching trends is the fun part of planning home renovation, but its not so fun searching for reliable, reputable and affordable contractors.

Montchanin Builders is comprised of seasoned professionals with impressive credentials in land acquisition, home design, and custom building. Our team offers a solid base of reliable crews and artisans who consistently build luxurious homes with classic architecture and modern styling. No matter what your style or budget may be, our crew here at Montchanin Builders would love to assist you in balancing impeccable kitchen design with an affordable budget.

Many people enjoy making a trip to our model homes and design center, which can help you pinpoint what you do and dont like. Here you can touch and see modern interior design concepts at work, as well as have all your questions answered by a knowledgeable team of kitchen renovation experts.

Our design program also includes an in-home consultation to hear your vision. Home renovation experts understand that a new kitchen is not just about a particular design aesthetic, but also about functionality. So well discuss topics like how much traffic and entertaining the room typically receives, how often your family cooks, what youve loved about the mood and atmosphere of other peoples kitchens, and how much room youll need for storage.

From there, we can help you choose everything from wall textures and paints to countertops and cabinetry to make your dreams a reality. Any magazine clippings or web images you find can be incorporated into your ideal vision.

Montchanin Builders can implement every step of a comprehensive kitchen renovation, including:

We handle all the nitty-gritty details, so you have nothing to worry about from concept through completion. Our reputation for superior craftsmanship and impeccable customer service here in Delaware has landed us on nationally-syndicated HGTV shows.

Our experts have identified five trends for Delaware kitchen renovation in 2014 that you may consider for your project:

    1. Black & White Color Scheme The timeless appeal of a black and white kitchen never goes out of style. High-contrast white counters with black appliances and countertops (or vice-versa) are beloved by designers right now. If youd like, you can even throw in a splash of an accent color of your choice, evident in towels, rugs, curtains, or containers. These designs stun with their cleanliness and sheer simplicity.

    2. Glamorous Styling If your family loves to cook and eat, then lets face it: the kitchen is really the heart and soul of the home! Foodies are starting to recognize this long-ignored fact and design accordingly. Designers may choose custom-painted cabinetry in rich, gemstone colors, accented by brass or chrome hardware, and lit with chandeliers or unusual pendants. They are radiant with resplendent beauty that will impress all visitors.

    3. Open Shelves, Glass Front Cabinets & Statement Pieces Presentation is important in the home these days. In the past, we were quick to hide all our kitchen goods, but modern trends are taking us toward proud presentation of a nice matching crystal wine glass set or an organized stack of colorful bowls. Perhaps we want to show off a little personalized style in the cookie and spice jars we choose, the monochromatic color of utensils weve selected, or the cookbooks we use on a daily basis.

    4. Dark Paint Colors It may defy convention, but a lot of homeowners are looking at darker and more vibrant paint tones for their busy kitchens. Black, deep brown, dark red and copper were a few of the colors that came up in Zillow Digs 2014 home renovation survey. This might work if you have very little wall space. Otherwise, you may want to paint the ceiling or just one wall with a dark, bold shade to prevent the space from feeling too confined.

    5. Streamlined Design That Blends With Living Space Walls are going to continue to come down, predicted John Petrie, the 2014 president of the National Kitchen and Bath Association. People are turning their focus to entertaining and creating a cohesive atmosphere throughout the main floor rooms of the home. Why not blend wood floors and cabinetry from the kitchen through the living room? Add a chandelier, leather, marble counters, neutral tones, and Old World styling from the living room and in through the kitchen.

Whether you dig these modern kitchen design ideas or have an image already in mind, let Montchanin Builders be your trusted partner. Learn more about Montchanins Delaware home renovation services by calling302-472-7213or emailing wwright@montchaninbuilders.net.
