How Much Does It Cost to Replace Windows? | Angies List

    - March 29, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

Depending on climate or preferences, there are several different types of windows, each of which features its own set of attributes.

    Double-hung windows

Double-hung windows are designed to be opened from the top or bottom, are great for hard-to-reach areas, and are generally the most inexpensive. These traits make double-hung windows the most commonly installed type.

    Tilt-out windows

Tilt-out windows fold in or out to reveal the glass's exterior, which allows it to be cleaned from inside your home. These types of windows are great for areas where exterior accessibility is limited, but they are typically more expensive than standard double-hung windows.

    Double-pane glass

Double-pane glass is widely available with the different encasement types, but it does carry an enhanced cost. Double-pane glass features an airtight space that is filled with inert gas. This method of construction helps with climate control, and paired with a properly sealed home, you can expect to save on utility costs.

    High-performance glass

Depending on your environment (or your wallet), you might want to explore the performance offered from the different types of specialty glass. You can get triple-pane windows for added savings, impact-resistant windows for areas of extreme conditions, or windows with shades built between the glass for a touch of modern living. These high-performance glass types are the most expensive to procure, but the added benefits may be worth the extra cost.

Have you recently installed replacement windows? Let us know your decision-making process to find the best fit for your house.

Cabinet Refacing | Stone Creek Furniture

    - March 28, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

Stone Creek Furniture can reface your current cabinets for a fraction of what you would pay for new cabinets. Plus, your refacing will be done by the same company that has been professionally staining furniture in the valley for over 22 years! Call Tim today for a free in-home cabinet refacing estimate at 480-696-5183.

Refacing can be considered a step-up from refinishing, as it entails the replacement of all cabinet drawers and hardware in addition to applying fresh paint, finish, or stain to the exterior surface. This includes buying new hinges, sliding drawers, and swinging front panels. Refacing is a better choice than the alternative when the primary goal is to transform the design of the existing cabinetry.

The only thing that remains the same are the cabinets themselves, though they will look vastly different once the process is complete. There is not a distinction between refacing and resurfacing. The terms are synonymous and basically mean the outward appearance of the cabinets are being changed.

Homeowners who are dissatisfied with the way their existing cabinetry looks and/or wish to have a dramatic change in style, refacing is an excellent medium. Given the added price of new drawers and hardware, the process costs a bit more than standard refinishing, but is far less than a full replacement. The cabinets themselves comprise the greatest value, which is why individuals considering refacing are at a better advantage cost-wise than those who prefer a room overhaul.

Given that the hardware parts mentioned will need to be discarded, be prepared to roughly double what you would for refinishing. Quality knobs, handles and a high-end veneer like natural wood are more expensive than commercially produced pieces that are made for economical budgets.

If you are happy with your kitchens layout but not its appearance, you may want to think about cabinet refacing. There is no need to buy new cabinets when the ones you have can be made to mimic them for cheaper. Only when the function of the space is an issue should a replacement be considered. It is more cost-effective and less time-consuming to reface/resurface than to remove cabinetry, plain and simple!

Stone Creek has an extensive selection of hardware styles and over 35 fine finish colors. Stop by one of our 4 locations and see why Stone Creek makes the difference in quality and price, or if you prefer, call Tim at 480-696-5183 or fill out the form below for a free cabinet refacing estimate.

Beautiful Kitchen Photos, Designs, Decorating and Home …

    - March 28, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

The kitchen is the place we prepare, cook and share food with our families, friends and neighbors. We tend to think of our kitchens as the heart of the home it's the space where everyone gathers, to work or to socialize. Kitchens are where budding chefs hone their skills, where kids do their homework, or where we host and entertain. It's often the room we love to decorate and design, upgrade and improve. Considering that we often treat our kitchens like trophy rooms, it's amazing to think that kitchens used to be the least desirable room in the home. Read more History of the kitchen

In communal societies of ages past, cooking was done over an open fire within a one-room home; all manner of life revolved around the cooking area. The advent of the chimney, as well as the idea of privacy, altered these one-room structures into multi-roomed homes. Kitchens were necessary but not pleasant: they were noisy, dirty, smelly and prone to catching fire. For these reasons, kitchens were moved as far away as possible from the social or private rooms in a home.

Throughout history, technological advancements and trends greatly influenced kitchen design as well as food preparation. Servants in the kitchen were necessary not only to cook but also to take care of the rising amounts of cutlery, dishware, gadgets and appliances. The turn of the 20th century saw a developing interest in time-motion studies and optimization in the workplace. Post World War II homes had new kitchens and new technology but no servants; designing kitchens for optimal use became hugely influential. The refrigerator, sink and cooktop were ideally placed within the "golden triangle" an influential design standard that we still see today.

In the last several decades, continued societal changes and technology have impacted the design of the kitchen. Men and women are in the kitchen, reviving complicated recipes and entertaining with sophisticated equipment. The kitchen has become, once again, the center of social activity.

Today's kitchen is as much about entertainment as it is about preparing food. We no longer consider the kitchen to be the center for domestic drudgery. Today's trophy kitchen has the latest timesaving appliances that are energy efficient, fitted, and designed to match the homeowner's personal style and taste. Homeowner's today often welcome guests immediately into their kitchen. The kitchen is becoming, in some instances, the living room of the home.

Regardless of the specific style, there are essential items found in nearly every kitchen: a sink, cooktop (or stovetop), oven, and food storage (refrigerator and pantry). Other items found in the kitchen are work surfaces, a home office, dishwasher, small appliances (like microwave, toaster, coffee maker), gadgets and tools, dishware, cutlery, garbage receptacles, ventilation, task lighting, and specialty items like a warming tray, wine cooler or television. Kitchen cabinetry is offered in a huge range of styles and organization, making kitchens effective, but beautiful, work spaces.

The most important rules for the kitchen are incorporating durable materials and efficient work zones. Kitchens are subjected to a daily barrage of water, steam, heat, spills, stains and traffic. Incorporating materials that can withstand your lifestyle as well as the temperature extremes of food preparation will be important for the longevity of your kitchen materials.

Establishing zones within the kitchen will help optimize movement and make for a highly functional space. Some zones are obvious, like placing the dishwasher next to the sink. Professional designers usually work with a client to find out how they like to work in the kitchen. For example, cooks that use the stovetop often should have all of their equipment (including cookware, utensils and seasonings) as close as possible. Families might want kid-friendly zones that encourage kids to prepare their own meals.

    Secaucus, New Jersey

    - March 27, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Our Town

Residents, as well as visitors staying at the community's many fine hotels and motels, can be in Manhattan in as little as 20 minutes via express bus. Or they quickly can be on their way to other points in via the New Jersey Turnpike or State Route 3, both of which pass through the town.

And just across the Hackensack River, a mile away, is the area's sports and entertainment center, The Meadowlands, home of the Giants, the Jets, concerts, circuses, ice shows, weekly flea market; and the Meadowlands Race Track.

Location! Location! Location! What makes Secaucus great for residents and visitors also makes it great for business. Secaucus is the corporate home of many major businesses and a distribution center serving Manhattan and Northern New Jersey. Its proximity to New York offers quick delivery.

This distribution center, cleverly separated from most of the town's residential areas, has spawned the other activity for which the community was once well known - outlet shopping. Outlets have greatly deminished in number. However, along with the manufacturers' outlets, you'll find the true warehouse outlets, where the store's in the front and racks of clothes are behind. Periodically the storehouses themselves are opened for that shopper's dream, a real warehouse sale!

The town has not neglected it's traditional business center, which residents call The Plaza. Flowers are pridefully planted in park areas in the center of town, where a beautification program was undertaken a few year's ago. There, businesses thrive, many in the hands of local families who have served their customers for generations.

Harmon Meadow, at the eastern side of Secaucus, has a pleasant town square atmosphere. There, you'll find many restaurants, some shops, a number of the major hotels, an attactive multiplex cinema and the Meadowlands Exposition Center. Nearby are the convenient big box stores that draw thousands of shoppers.

Secaucus has also become a communications hub, home of NBA Entertainment (and NBA draft), Major League Baseball Network, MY Channel 9 and news bureaus for other networks.

Sports and recreation abound for town residents. There's a swim center for summer and an ice rink for winter and a Recreation Center for year round activities. There's a soccer field and a roller hockey rink. There's a boat ramp into the Hackensack River. There are gyms and fields and organized teams for virtually all outdoor and indoor sports.

Nature is preserved in areas large and small; Snipes Beach Park, The Duck Pond, Schmidts Woods, and a major Meadowlands preserve, Mill Creek Marsh, in the northern sector of the town. The trailhead of the 1.5-mile long Mill Creek Marsh Trail is located adjacent to the big box stores, providing access for birding especially. With its patches of marsh grasses, mud flats and long winding brackish waterways, the Meadowlands is home to 260 bird species, including 15 state-endangered species.

Canoe and kayak trips through the meadows are available at Laurel Hill Hudson Country Park in Secaucus. The Hackensack Riverkeeper (201-920-4746) rents canoes and kayaks on weekends from April through October. The Hackensack Riverkeeper Cruise Program, (201-968-0808) offers two-hour guided naturalist trips on the river and through the marshes of the Meadowlands The park also boasts two floating docks and the only free, unrestricted public boat ramp on the River. The Meadowlands Enviornment Center is a short drive from Secaucus. More on eco-tourism.

While sports and recreation serve the young, the town has also remembered its older residents. Secaucus has led the State in Senior housing. Three major Senior Citizen residences and a Senior activity center serve the needs of those who have served the town.

Secaucus is community centered, with clubs and organizations - Kiwanis, Rotary, Lions, Masons, Unico. etc. One can become active with the Shade Tree Commission, or any number of other organizations. The Volunteer Fire Department is a focal point of activity and civic pride.

Secaucus offers fine schools for its children. There are two public elementary schools and a middle-high school. There, children get a caring education and are offered a range of extra curricular activities. The new Arthur F. Couch Performaning Arts Center was opened at the High Schoool/Middle School facility in 2005. There is a library preschool and day care centers for the town's youngest. The public school system uniquely offers full day kindergarten and pre-kindergarten programs.

The Secaucus Public Library and Business Resource Center offers outstanding facilities for research and recreational reading, plus ample computer facilities with free wi-fi access, a small-business center and meeting rooms.

Eight churches and a Hindu temple serve the religious needs of the community. The Episcopal Church of Our Saviour, First Reformed, Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic, St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran and Shree Swaminarayan Hindu Temple each maintain their own religious centers. Quimby Community Church meets at The Church of Our Saviour, and North Jersey United Pentecostal Church meets at the First Reformed Church.

All this and more in a town of 16,000 residents! It's a great place to live, work, raise a family, and a great place to visit.
