How to Install Fiber Cement Siding | Today’s Homeowner

    - January 14, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

Installing fiber cement siding (FCS)such as HardiePlankis easier than you might think, though there are some important differences from traditional wood siding. Installation instructions may vary depending on the manufacturer, and check with your local building inspector for any code requirements.

Always follow these safety precautions when installing fiber cement siding:

Cutting fiber cement siding with a circular saw.

Fiber cement siding can be nailed by hand or with a pneumatic nailer. It can also be attached using corrosion resistant screws.

Putting up trim before installing fiber cement siding.

Begin by installing the inside and outside corners on the wall. These can be made from wood, vinyl, or thicker fiber cement products such as HardieTrim. Corners should be at least thicker than two stacked pieces of siding to allow room for caulking.

Fiber cement siding should be installed 6 or more above the grade level of the house with a 1 2 gap between horizontal surfaces like decks, steps, or adjacent roofs. Flash above doors and windows, leaving a gap between the flashing and siding. If youre working alone, overlap gauges can be used to support the siding while you nail it.

    Blind nailing fiber cement siding.

Begin by attaching a 1 wide strip of FCS 1/8 above the bottom of the first row to provide the proper angle for the siding. Next, nail the first row of siding into the studs, leaving 1/8 gaps at the corner boards to allow for caulking. Blind nailing is preferable to face nailing, since any nail heads are hidden by the next row of siding. Nails do not need to be predrilled except near the ends.

Center joints over studs unless special metal off stud joiners are used. Joints should be butted loosely together with a 4 wide strip of 30 pound felt positioned behind each one. Make sure the felt overhangs the previous row of siding to keep water from running behind it if the caulking fails.

Each row of siding should overlap by 1 or more. A spacer stick with a notch cut the length of the exposed part of the siding makes alignment easy.

Use a square or level to check that the rows line up at corners. When notching the siding around doors and windows, hold it in place and mark each end. To determine the depth of the notch, hook the spacer stick on the previous row of siding and measure from the top of the stick to the window or door unit.

When cutting angles on gables, start by cutting a piece of scrap siding or wood to the proper angle then use it to mark each piece. To measure the top row of siding on horizontal eaves, hook the spacer stick on the previous row and measure up to the eave, then rip the siding to width.

    Painting fiber cement siding.

While fiber cement siding should be painted as soon as possible after installation, factory primed FCS can go as long as six months without painting. Make sure it is clean and dry before painting. Caulk joints and ends first with a high quality latex caulking. Prime bare siding and any exposed cuts then topcoat with 100% acrylic latex paint.

World’s first 3D-printed apartment building constructed in …

    - November 2, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Caixin

While architectural firms compete with their designs for 3D-printed dwellings, one company in China has quietly been setting about getting the job done. In March of last year, company WinSun claimed to have printed 10 houses in 24 hours, using a proprietary 3D printer that uses a mixture of ground construction and industrial waste, such as glass and tailings, around a base of quick-drying cement mixed with a special hardening agent.

Now, WinSun has further demonstrated the efficacy of its technology -- with a five-storey apartment building and a 1,100 square metre (11,840 square foot) villa, complete with decorative elements inside and out, on display at Suzhou Industrial Park.

The 3D printer array, developed by Ma Yihe, who has been inventing 3D printers for over a decade, stands 6.6 metres high, 10 metres wide and 40 metres long (20 by 33 by 132 feet). This fabricates the parts in large pieces at WinSun's facility. The structures are then assembled on-site, complete with steel reinforcements and insulation in order to comply with official building standards.

Although the company hasn't revealed how large it can print pieces, based on photographs on its website, they are quite sizeable. A CAD design is used as a template, and the computer uses this to control the extruder arm to lay down the material "much like how a baker might ice a cake," WinSun said. The walls are printed hollow, with a zig-zagging pattern inside to provide reinforcement. This also leaves space for insulation.

This process saves between 30 and 60 percent of construction waste, and can decrease production times by between 50 and 70 percent, and labour costs by between 50 and 80 percent. In all, the villa costs around $161,000 to build.

And, using recycled materials in this way, the buildings decrease the need for quarried stone and other materials -- resulting in a construction method that is both environmentally forward and cost effective.

In time, the company hopes to use its technology on much larger scale constructions, such as bridges and even skyscrapers.

    Patios – Shropshire Paving

    - November 1, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Shropshire Paving

The one thing every garden needs is a seating area, somewhere to sit, relax and unwind.

We have installed literally hundreds of patios of all shapes and sizes across Shropshire and no two are the same as everyone has different requirements for their garden patio.

    Shropshire Patio Paving Materials

Patio paving materials can vary from budget concrete paving slabs, patterned concrete patio slabs, large flagstones, Indian sandstone, natural limestone, natural welsh slate or granite. We have also used block pavers, concrete setts, tile and recycled brick.

Within these options there are also texture, size and colour options to consider so the possibilities are endless.

There are also numerous paving slab manufacturers to choose from including Bowland Stone, Wyresdale, Stonemarket, Marshalls, Bradstone, Eaton and Village Stone to name just a few.

Some manufacturers will charge a premium for their branded patio products. Whether this means you are getting a better paving product is a matter of opinion.

    Choosing a Patio Paving Slab

The centre piece of any garden is normally the patio so it is really important to think about the kind of feel you want when you walk into the garden.

    Questions to ask yourself are:

What we try to do is tailor a Shropshire patio product to your specific requirements. For example, you may have a small garden and you might want it to look larger and brighter. On some new builds now, the garden space is very small so you might want a unique design to pave the entire area using a selection of different patio materials.

You are more than welcome to look at brochures before your initial consultation which is free if you reside within Shropshire, but the problem is that a lot of marketed products are not actually stock items, so you will not be able to see samples unless they are ordered. Also the photos do not always do justice to the product colours.

During your initial consultation, we can discuss your requirements and budget, and from here we can suggest a range of options and provide samples for you to choose from. There is no substitute for seeing the actual products.

If you prefer, we can meet you at our suppliers some of which have display areas, and we can talk you through the options available. We use local Shropshire suppliers

    Shropshire Patio Installation

In our view there is only one way to lay a patio - the right way. Our quotations for Shropshire patio slabbing are based on allowing sufficient materials and sufficient time to do the job the right way first time every time. We have built our success on providing quality workmanship at a competitive price.

Our patio slabbing quotations will not be the cheapest but in this industry you will definitely get what you pay for. Every patio area is first prepared by digging out the area to a sufficient depth to allow for hardcore, mortar, and the thickness of the paving slab itself.

Hardcore is raked out, levelled and compacted to form a solid base on which to lay the slabs. Some companies will save money but not using hardcore but eventually this will always lead to loose paving slabs.

We then lay the patio slabs on a full bed of mortar. Most companies will 'spot' slabs putting a little mortar on each corner of the slab. This is done to save time and money but leaves a hollow space underneath the slab. It is then only a matter of time before the slab starts rocking and they will then need to be re-laid.

Finally if you have chosen a patio paving slab that is designed to be laid with a pointing gap between the slabs, then this should be done with a semi wet mortar mix to ensure the mixture sets properly. This is another common mistake that will result in weeds appearing through the joints.
