    Patios – Shropshire Paving

    - November 1, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Shropshire Paving

The one thing every garden needs is a seating area, somewhere to sit, relax and unwind.

We have installed literally hundreds of patios of all shapes and sizes across Shropshire and no two are the same as everyone has different requirements for their garden patio.

    Shropshire Patio Paving Materials

Patio paving materials can vary from budget concrete paving slabs, patterned concrete patio slabs, large flagstones, Indian sandstone, natural limestone, natural welsh slate or granite. We have also used block pavers, concrete setts, tile and recycled brick.

Within these options there are also texture, size and colour options to consider so the possibilities are endless.

There are also numerous paving slab manufacturers to choose from including Bowland Stone, Wyresdale, Stonemarket, Marshalls, Bradstone, Eaton and Village Stone to name just a few.

Some manufacturers will charge a premium for their branded patio products. Whether this means you are getting a better paving product is a matter of opinion.

    Choosing a Patio Paving Slab

The centre piece of any garden is normally the patio so it is really important to think about the kind of feel you want when you walk into the garden.

    Questions to ask yourself are:

What we try to do is tailor a Shropshire patio product to your specific requirements. For example, you may have a small garden and you might want it to look larger and brighter. On some new builds now, the garden space is very small so you might want a unique design to pave the entire area using a selection of different patio materials.

You are more than welcome to look at brochures before your initial consultation which is free if you reside within Shropshire, but the problem is that a lot of marketed products are not actually stock items, so you will not be able to see samples unless they are ordered. Also the photos do not always do justice to the product colours.

During your initial consultation, we can discuss your requirements and budget, and from here we can suggest a range of options and provide samples for you to choose from. There is no substitute for seeing the actual products.

If you prefer, we can meet you at our suppliers some of which have display areas, and we can talk you through the options available. We use local Shropshire suppliers

    Shropshire Patio Installation

In our view there is only one way to lay a patio - the right way. Our quotations for Shropshire patio slabbing are based on allowing sufficient materials and sufficient time to do the job the right way first time every time. We have built our success on providing quality workmanship at a competitive price.

Our patio slabbing quotations will not be the cheapest but in this industry you will definitely get what you pay for. Every patio area is first prepared by digging out the area to a sufficient depth to allow for hardcore, mortar, and the thickness of the paving slab itself.

Hardcore is raked out, levelled and compacted to form a solid base on which to lay the slabs. Some companies will save money but not using hardcore but eventually this will always lead to loose paving slabs.

We then lay the patio slabs on a full bed of mortar. Most companies will 'spot' slabs putting a little mortar on each corner of the slab. This is done to save time and money but leaves a hollow space underneath the slab. It is then only a matter of time before the slab starts rocking and they will then need to be re-laid.

Finally if you have chosen a patio paving slab that is designed to be laid with a pointing gap between the slabs, then this should be done with a semi wet mortar mix to ensure the mixture sets properly. This is another common mistake that will result in weeds appearing through the joints.

Gilliland Landscape – Paver Patios & Walkways

    - November 1, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Pavers are pre-formed concrete tiles made to simulate cobblestone, tile, brick, or even chiseled stone. The use of concrete pavers in both patios and pathways has been gaining in popularity over the years. Historically, the use of clay / brick pavers in landscaping had been more popular. But pavers have evolved and now instead of using brick pavers, interlocking concrete pavers are preferred in modern landscapes. This is due to their increased strength & durability.

The main advantage to pavers vs. traditional concrete is they do not crack and last much longer. Depending on the variety you chose, they can be very easy to place furniture on and for kids to play on. Pavers should also be very stable. Some central Pennsylvania paver companies will not take enough time to set the base properly. Youve probably seen paver patios where settling has occurred, making the patio look less than desirable. But if installed properly, pavers actually have more compressive strength than concrete and should never settle, sag or move for as long as you own your home.

At Gilliland Landscape, we are ICPI certified paver installers and take the time to do it right so you will be able to enjoy a stable patio for a very long time. And then we back our work with our industry-leading 5-year warranty. Your new paver patio will look great and be built to last.

Paver Patios We have the experience to design and build your custom paver patio that will be the perfect match for your landscape or outdoor living environment. We have years of experience installing paver patios throughout Centre, Clearfield, Indiana, & Jefferson Counties. This includes areas like Clearfield, Dubois, Brookville, Punxsutawney, Indiana, Philipsburg, and State College.

Paver Driveways Theres no better look for a driveway than concrete pavers. You can create more instant curb appeal with a paver driveway than almost any other upgrade you could do in your landscape. It turns your driveway from normal to a look of craftsmanship and distinguished quality. Paver driveways are stronger than concrete; 2-3 times stronger in compressive strength and weight bearing capacity than normal concrete. If you question if pavers can hold up to vehicular traffic, read the articles about the use of pavers in the Port of Baltimore and Port of Oakland.

Paver Pathways / Walkways Pavers also make the best pathways. Compared to other options for pathways (concrete, gravel, flagstone), concrete pavers often make the best choice because of their uniform surface, their unique look, and their durability.

The most expensive patio, walkway, or drive is the one you have to pay for twice! At Gilliland Landscape, we will build it right the first time, and then stand behind it. We dont take shortcuts in the construction process; knowing it will ultimately shortcut our companys future. Just like you, we are in this for the long haul!

If youre ready to meet with us concerning getting your own paver patio, driveway or walkway, simply fill out our online quote request form and we will contact you promptly to set up a consultation. You can also call (814) 592-4613 today to set up an appointment.

    Kitchen Countertop Buying Guide

    - November 1, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Finding the perfect countertop shouldnt be a challenge. Thats why weve assembled some points to consider when finding the surface thats right for your home and budget.

Laminate countertops consist of sheeting glued to plywood or particleboard substrate. The result is a beautiful, affordable countertop thats quite durable. Laminate countertops resist water, are the easiest surface to clean and maintain and come in hundreds of color and style options. And, because theyre easy to install, our installation specialists will help you quickly so you're back to your routine with minimal downtime.

If you do choose laminate countertops, keep in mind that they are not suitable for cutting and sometimes have visible seams and edges. Laminate countertops are the least heat resistant, so be sure to use a trivet.

Solid surface countertops are made of non-porous, acrylic material for a visually seamless appearance. They are available in a range of colors and patterns, including some eco-friendly options, and offer the option of an integral sink and backsplash. Solid surface countertops resist water, bacteria and stains, providing a low-maintenance option for your home.

Do use caution with you solid surface countertops. They are susceptible to scratching and less heat-resistant than quartz or granite.

Granite countertops are crafted from beautiful, durable, natural stone. Visually rich and dynamic, granite countertops are highly heat-resistant and can stand up to stains and bacteria when properly sealed. And, thanks to their ultra smooth texture, granite is phenomenal for baking preparations.

Granite countertops do have visible seams. To maintain your granite, seal it yearly to ensure bacteria resistance. Use caution around stress points as the stone can split.

Quartz is another non-porous, natural stone countertop option that is the most durable option available. Like granite, quartz resists heat, water, bacteria and stains, but is easier to maintain. Quartz countertops have more consistent colors and patterns and are very easy to clean.

With quartz, there are fewer shades to choose from and you will have to contend with visible seams, but with so many other benefits, quartz is a wonderful choice for countertops that last.

Although natural stone countertops are heat resistant, it's a good idea to protect all surfaces from hot pots and pans with hot pads or trivets.

For a truly customized cooking experience, a combination of different countertops can be designed for specific kitchen tasks. For example, stone surfaces work nicely near the range for placement of hot pots and pans, while solid surfaces are perfect for use around the sink for easy cleaning.

Because of special exceptions, combinations of countertops could be the most expensive option. Speak with a kitchen project specialist about your budget or needs to find the perfect countertop options for your kitchen.

How to Begin a Living Room Remodel | Home Remodeling …

    - November 1, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Renovating your living room: It's exciting, but it can be a bit overwhelming, too. Where should you start? How much can you afford to spend? How do you know whether that contractor with the impressive portfolio will really show up when he's supposed to? And what if the sofa that looks so gorgeous on the showroom floor makes your own house resemble a bordello? Relax. We're here to make it simpler for you. Follow our step-by-step guide to renovation, and get ready to kick back in a new living room that suits your needs, your style and your budget.

One of the keys to a successful renovation is plenty of forethought, knowledge and information especially if you're making structural changes, or working with several professionals and a big budget. Take your time to plan before you begin, so that you are less likely to have regrets when you are finished. "Designing a room or a remodeling project is a journey or a process," says interior designer Karen Soojian, ASID, "and it takes time to develop ideas and do things right. In other words, you need to know your destination and how you plan to get there."

"To start," says interior designer Andrew Suvalsky, "try to envision how you see yourself and your family getting the most use out of the space. Will the space be used for parties? Intimate gatherings? Do you want or need one large seating area or several different seating groups?"

Think long-term. Remember to plan not only for this stage of your life, but for the next phases, as well. If you're newlyweds planning to have children in a few years, take those future kids into account when planning your renovation, so that you don't have to redo everything. Ask people who already have kids what works in real life and what doesn't; what they wish they had in their living rooms; what has caused safety issues or got broken so many times it had to be thrown away.

On the other hand, if you have older parents (or are a senior yourself), be sure to design your space so that it is safe and comfortable for yourself and your guests as the years go by.

Once you have a sense of what functions you want your new living room to serve, gather lots of information. Check out the valuable information on "Hiring a Pro for Your Living Room" and search the Web for other reliable, accurate information on trade-group websites such as ASID (American Society of Interior Designers), NARI (National Association for the Remodeling Industry) and NAHB (National Association of Home Builders).

And don't forget to talk to real people. Ask your friends and neighbors to recommend local professionals, and be sure to inquire as to whether there are any local pros you should steer clear of. Find out what other people are glad they included in their renovations, and what wasn't worth the money.

    Appliance repair | Angies List

    - October 31, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

There are many factors consumers need to consider before hiring an appliance repair service. Home appliances are expensive, and you want to ensure the company you hire is reputable and has the skills required to complete the fix in a timely and efficient manner.

Tips for hiring an appliance repair service:

Research potential hires. Get at least three estimates and compare the bids based on price, parts, labor and warranty. You also want to research how long the company has been in business, check reviews on Angies List and speak with past clients.

Inquire about costs. Expect to pay up to $100 for a typical service call. Additional parts and labor charges will apply if you hire the company for a repair, but many companies will deduct the service charge.

Check skill level. Its important to hire a company whose employees have the training to complete the job. Ask if the employees are factory trained or certified in appliance repair.

Is the work under warranty? Check to see if the repair service guarantees its work, and determine how long. Most warranties vary from 90 days to one year.
