Residential Geothermal Heating and Cooling Systems …

    - June 10, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

WPGHCI has been installing residential geothermal units for over 15 years now. Originally as a combination of Burtner Geothermal and Callen heating, then merged as Western Pennsylvania Geothermal. WPGHCI has installed residential systems in everything from 1000 sq ft homes to 18,000 sq ft mansions that require multiple systems.

WPGHCI prides itself in taking into account every possible piece of information that is available before sizing a geothermal system. A load study calculation is done prior to any estimate WPGHCI produces, and in retro-fit applications WPGHCI usually runs a blower door test and if necessary a thermal image scan of the home. (See our FAQ page for an explanation of a Blower Door Test).

When performing a load study calculation many factors are taken into consideration the insulation properties of the home, the window sizes their U-factors, how much of the basement is below grade, the direction the house is going to face, how much property is around the home and the terrain. (See our FAQ page for a more complete list of what WPGHCI would like to know in order to size a geothermal system for your particular application).

Dont let any company install ANY type of heating and cooling in your home unless they have completed a load study and taken into account all of the necessary parameters.

Once WPGHCI has gathered and processed all of this information, we are able to give you a highly accurate estimate of your options for installing geothermal as well as a cost analysis to show what it is going to cost you to operate the system in the coming years.

While residential geothermal applications are predominately forced air, geothermal does have the ability to produce hot water for use in radiant floor applications.

For most residential applications WPGHCI has chosen to use Water Furnace Geothermal units. ( See our products page for a link to the Water Furnace Website)

WPGHCI has employees with IGSHPA certification and Water Furnace Geo Pro Master Dealer Certification. We are member of the Geoexchange. Since installing our first system, WPGHCI now has well over 500 installations, throughout Western Pennsylvania and into Ohio, West Virginia, and Maryland. HVAC System Replacement Costs

    - June 3, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

There are several factors affecting HVAC system replacement costs. In this guide, we outline those factors and give you a good idea of what you can expect as you make decisions about your next residential heating and cooling system.

    1. Quality and Performance: All top HVAC manufacturers make a variety of models to meet the demands of diverse consumers. The top-quality products are usually also the best performing products. Staged heating and cooling, variable-speed blowers and communicating technology are common in the top of the line models, which are also the most expensive models. Lesser models feature single-stage and single-speed performance. They will cost less, sometimes significantly less.

    2. Efficiency: This factor doesnt always correspond to quality. Top brands make their best models in a variety of efficiency levels to accommodate customers in differing climates. For example, Tranes 2 best furnaces are the 95% efficient XC95 for use in cold climates and the 80% efficient XC80 for use in milder climates. The more efficient a product is, the more it will cost.

    3. Size: The larger capacity components you need, the more they will cost. However, this factor is not as significant in the overall cost as the other factors.

    4. Removal and disposal of the old HVAC system: Disconnecting and removing the old HVAC system can be a time-consuming job. There may be additional charges to properly dispose of it in your area. The cost of removing and disposal of the old system might add $300 to $500 to the total cost.

    5. Installation: The cost of installation can vary quite a bit. The relative ease or difficulty of the installation, including the amount of extra material (gas line, vent pipe, refrigerant line, sheet metal, etc.) will greatly affect installation costs. The time of year may also be a factor. For example, if you need to have an HVAC system replaced in the heat of summer, installation will probably cost more at that time because it is a busy time for HVAC contractors. If you can have the system replaced during a slower period for contractors, you will likely receive more competitive estimates.

We base our equipment costs on systems that would fit an average home, 1,600 to 2,000 square feet. We use a 100,000 Btu furnace and a 3 ton air conditioner or heat pump. Lower efficiency, lower quality models will cost less. Higher efficiency, higher quality models cost the most. In terms of installation, the more time and materials are needed, the more it will cost.

Gas furnace price range: 1,000 to $2,800

Air Handler price range: $800 to $2,200

Heat pump price range: $1,400 to $3,500

    Secaucus NJ Pest Control

Since 1931, ChemTec Pest Control has been supplying the most effective commercial and residential pest control services to business and homeowners in Secaucus and throughout New Jersey and New York. As a trusted New Jersey pest control company, ChemTec take great pride in eliminating problem pests from restaurants, apartment complexes, hospitals, hotels, and many other commercial facilities and homes. If mice, ants, cockroaches, or other pests have infested your property, contact ChemTec Pest Control in Secaucus today!

In Secaucus one of the most common pests found in commercial facilities are flies. House flies, small flies, and bottle flies are often found buzzing around garbage cans, decomposing animals, and vegetable matter. Both house flies and bottle flies will land on food and food preparation areas, contaminating these areas and can cause roundworm, tapeworm, typhoid, cholera, and dysentery.

The German cockroach and the American cockroach are both known to make their way into businesses in boxes, luggage, and bags. Once indoors, cockroaches will quickly breed, making their way through plumbing, electrical conduits, and heating vents, infesting hotels, restaurants, food processing plants, and many other commercial facilities. Cockroaches are attracted to food, yard debris, garbage, woodpiles, clutter, and moist condition, often making their nests in kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and crawl spaces. Cockroaches can be very dangerous to humans as they are carriers for many diseases, easily contaminating food with saliva and feces and can cause severe allergies, asthma, and bronchial disorders in young children and the elderly.

There is nothing worse than a rat scurrying across your businesses floor, not only do they scare away customers, just one mouse sighting can ruin your companys image and reputation. Rats, mice, and other rodents often find their way into commercial facilities in search of food, water, and shelter. These rodents can cause serious damage by chewing on your electrical wiring, gnawing on wood and drywall, as well as cause serious health risks by contaminating insulation and food with tie droppings and urine.

At ChemTec Pest Control, we understand the importance on achieving and maintaining a pest free environment for you business. With our highly effective, affordable, and eco-friendly commercial pest control services we will eliminate insects, rodents, and pests birds that have infested your property and apply preventative treatments to ensure they do not return. Lawn Care 101 – Better Homes & Gardens

    - June 3, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Treating Broadleaf Weeds

Broadleaf weeds are the bane of lawn lovers. Dandelions, clover, dollarweed, and others invade quickly and spread relentlessly.

The right time: Treat actively growing weeds; apply granular products on a dewy morning.

Why timing matters: Used properly, broadleaf weed killers are highly effective, but few pest controls fail as readily when conditions aren't optimal. For example, the granules of weed-and-feed products, which are applied with a spreader, must stick to the leaves of the weeds to be effective. That requires moisture. The perfect time to apply, therefore, is an early morning when there's a heavy dew on the lawn -- the heavier the better. If the grass isn't wet, you'll be wasting your time and money.

Whether you use a granular weed-and-feed or spray a liquid broadleaf weed killer, the weeds must be well watered and actively growing for the chemical to work. Thus, treating during a hot, dry spell in summer may yield disappointing results. Spring and fall, when temperatures are moderate and moisture plentiful, are ideal times.

In the market for a new lawn mower? Here's how to find the right one for you.

Pre-emergent herbicides, or weed preventers, control crabgrass and other weeds by stopping their seeds from germinating. An application early in the growing season works wonders; it's like vaccinating your lawn against weeds.

The right time: Apply preventer when forsythia blooms drop.

Why timing matters: Weed preventers are not effective against weeds that have already begun to grow, so you must apply them before germination to gain any benefit. Crabgrass, the primary target of lawn weed preventers, normally germinates just after forsythia blooms, so take your cue from Mother Nature. When you notice forsythia bushes dropping their blossoms (March to May, depending on your region), apply weed preventer, and water as soon as possible to activate it.

Need to reseed? For cool-season grasses, fall is the ideal time; plant warm-season grasses in late spring. But remember: Don't apply crabgrass preventer at the same time that you plant seed; it stops seedlings from growing.

How to Landscape a Hill That You Can’t Mow | Home Guides …

    - June 3, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Nature is filled with hillside gardens that don't require mowing.

By thoughtfully landscaping a hill you can't mow, you can create a vibrant focal point of outdoor design. Selecting native plants is the best choice for steep hills; once established, they don't require supplemental watering and resist pests and disease. Mix trees, shrubs and deep-rooted perennials with grasses and ground covers with spreading habits to create a dynamic, no-mow landscape that revitalizes a hill while preventing soil erosion.

Select a range of native trees, shrubs, perennials, grasses and ground covers for the hill. Choose plants known to be low-maintenance in your geographic region. Add wildflowers to enhance a natural feeling; stick to only a handful of varieties and arrange them in a regular pattern for a more formal design.

Place a horizontal pathway on the hill so you can maneuver through plants without eroding the soil. Lay stepping stones for a casual path you won't frequent. Install more elaborate stone, paving stone or brick paths if you intend to use them often, and include a stairway to access the paths if the hill feels too steep to navigate vertically.

Arrange plants so sun-lovers grow on the southern and western sides of the hill. Place plants that grow best in slightly cooler, shadier conditions on the northern and eastern sides. Put plants that thrive with wetter roots near the bottom of the hill and install those that grow best with dry roots toward the top.

Create mini-terraces to plant each vertically oriented specimen. These include trees, shrubs and most perennials, which would look awkward if planted sideways into the hill. Flatten areas larger than the root ball of each plant, and dig the holes perpendicular to the ground.

Mold soil ridges around the base of plants with your hands to direct water to saturate plant roots instead of running off the side of the hill.

Fill in the gaps between plants by adding groundcovers and annuals to help reduce soil erosion. Plant them directly into the side of the hill.

Scatter a heavy application of wildflower seeds if you want to include them in the design.

Install drip irrigation to avoid walking on the hill as tender plant roots establish themselves.
