Their mission and they decided to accept it was to design a garden for a space the size of carport and install it in three days.
Sonya Becker of Northwest Landscaping LLC won the judges award in the third annual Growdown at Tucson Botanical Gardens in mid-March.
She also took a peoples choice award for best harvesting feature in her Desert Delight design.
Landscape designers Barbara Wilson and Dara Widner took a peoples choice nod for best garden art in their entry Tucson Feng Shui.
Margaret Joplin of Design Collaborations contributed Simple Beauty.
Their entries present innovative ideas on how to landscape a backyard. Here are six.
From the end of that roof, the gutter stair-steps to guide water into a 3-foot-tall ceramic pot. Water overflows from the pot into a series of catchment basins, then through a channel directly into a bed of plants.
This is a decorative approach to passive water harvesting and you get a waterfall effect, Becker says.
The water flows down the chain into a huge steel bowl with an underground pipe. That pipe would guide water into the landscape of desert-adapted plants.
She and Wilson packed the garden with those natural elements: plants that attract birds, a bubbling fountain to add water, a fire pit and stone gabions.

Artful water harvesting helps seal Growdown win
Rising young jockey Sean Bowen secured the winner over fences that he needed at Haydock to allow him to make his debut in the Crabbies Grand National at Aintree next week.
The 17-year-old completed a 20-1 double on the day aboard Paul Nicholls 5-2 favourite Virak when winning the 888sport.com Handicap Chase by six lengths at Haydock Park. The win means the 5lb claimer - son of Welsh trainer Peter Bowen, who will saddle 2014 Scottish National winner Al Co at Aintree next week - has the requisite number of wins over fences to line-up in the worlds greatest steeplechase.
Time had been running out for Bowen, who needed a 10th win over the big obstacles to qualify to ride in the Aintree marathon. With no chase rides on Sunday and no jumps racing on Tuesday and Wednesday, the youngster would only have had Easter Monday to get the winner he needed had he not prevailed at Haydock.
Thankfully for Bowen, the wait is over and he will now be on board Nicholls Mon Parrain, who is a best-priced 50-1 for the National.
Bowen, who is battling for the conditional jockeys title and moved on to 36 winners for the season with his latest successes, said: It is absolutely massive for me to be able to ride in the Grand National, especially aged just 17. Thats whats given me the most buzz, more than the wins today.
It will be great to ride in the National, that was a target, but the main target is to go for the conditional jockeys title, though Nick (De Boinville) will be hard to beat.

I was very getting very frustrated and Monday was the last day I could do it. So this was really my main day I could do it. I am glad I have.
He added: Mon Parrain has form over the fences and jumped around their fine. I schooled him yesterday and he schooled absolutely brilliantly. He is in fine form and hopefully he can give me a good spin over the National fences.

Young jockey Sean Bowen has claimed an important treble at Haydock taking his tally over fences to 10 which qualifies him to ride in the Grand National.
The 17-year-old will ride the Paul Nicholls-trained Mon Farrain in the world's most famous steeplechase next Sunday after his Haydock victory on Virak for the stable.
Bowen admitted he had been frustrated in his attempt to reach the standard but was now turning his attention to the National.
"I've been waiting for that for a while, but I'm glad I've got it and hopefully Mon Parrain will be a good spin in the National," Bowen said.
"I was very frustrated. Monday was the last day I could do it as Tuesday and Wednesday there are no jump meetings.
"Thanks to Paul for giving me the chances to ride these horses and it's great to get my 10 winners over fences.
"It will be great to ride in the National."
Nicholls will have four or five horses in the race.

What is cold asphalt?
