A PEST control company has been called in to eradicate rats from a pub.

JD Wetherspoon, which runs the Green Dragon in St Edward Street, Leek, confirmed there had been an ongoing issue with rodents at the venue.

"The Green Dragon continues to be aware of the situation and closely monitors it, dealing with it accordingly. The pub is kept clean at all times and clear from rubbish."

Mum-of-three Sam Brough, aged 42, was drinking at the pub last Saturday when she spotted a rat running across the walled rockery in the beer garden.

STANDING in the kitchen, sitting room or the garden it is hard to believe that you are in the city because all you can see is acres and acres of arable farmland.

The setting for this family home is truly exceptional and definitely a very big tick but it is far from being the only one in its favour.

Home to Peter and Evelyn Parkinson these past 13 years or so, the property at Stephens Way, Bignall End, is just ideal for a family to walk straight into tomorrow.

It is in excellent condition and much of it has been renewed during their time here. It is spacious and has a good layout, has all the amenities such as highly-rated schools, shops and transport links and is on the market at a very competitive price.

Evelyn said: "We are only moving to be with our daughter in Devon otherwise there is absolutely no way we would want to move. This is a lovely house in a lovely spot and we have been very happy here."

It makes a good impression from the moment you pull into the large brick-paved driveway and walk through the door into the hallway which is bright and welcoming.

Evelyn said: "We have done quite a bit of work here including replacing all the internal doors and the windows." It shows too and a visitor's initial response is of a very light interior.

That impression is only deepened when you go to the right and into the through lounge/sitting room which Evelyn calls her "sunshine rooms".

Running the depth of the property from front to back this is a big room and filled with daylight from the big window overlooking the drive to the patio doors which open out to the garden and that spectacular view.

    Contractors worried over pending bills

    - April 3, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Contractors have kept their fingers crossed over the bills pending with the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC). They are more worried about the State governments reluctance to release funds for the works undertaken under the Special Development Funds (SDF).

    Lack of funds

The Corporation has to clear amounts in excess of Rs. 25 crore including Rs. 15.96 crore under the head general funds, due to the contractors for more than three years. Of this, Rs. 7 crore to Rs. 8 crore was relating to the SDF works. And, another Rs. 12 crore has to be paid for the works taken up under general funds.

We have taken up works like repair of roads following assurance from sitting MLAs (during 2013-14) that the government would clear the bills immediately under the SDF. But, bifurcation, general elections and change in guard have impacted the bills. The government is said to be reluctant to release funds under the SDF head, says a contractor R. Subba Rao.

Municipal Contractors Association vice-president A. Ankeswara Rao said the Municipal Commissioner released Rs. 1.02 crore worth bills couple of days ago. The VMC released about Rs. 1.20 crore in three to four tranches, he says.

Then Municipal Commissioner C. Hari Kiran had promised to pay Rs. 50 lakh a month to contractors last year. Had the promise been kept, the Corporation would have cleared all the dues, he said.

Mr. Rao said the Corporation has stopped payment of bills ever since the Model Code of Conduct came into force in 2014.

First, it was the municipal polls. Then, it was the ZPTC and MPTC elections. Though the ZPTC and MPTC elections code is not applicable to the city, the officials cited it as a reason for stopping the payment, he recalled.

Contractors are up in arms against the VMC for the inordinate delay in payment of the pending bills.

Cape Breton Regional Municipality in hot water over refurbishment project

    - April 3, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

SYDNEY The Cape Breton Regional Municipality is facing a second lawsuit the regarding refurbishment of two community water tanks.

A.M.L. Painting Ltd. based in Georges River has filed a civil suit in Nova Scotia Supreme Court against the municipality after it was rejected to complete the tender.

Company officials submitted a bid for the project on June 27, 2014, which they say complied with all the conditions set forth in the tender call.

A.M.L. offered to carry out the work for $1.5 million plus tax, which included the price of performingcontainment and enclosure protocols described in the tender for exterior blasting work.

By submitting a bid, the plaintiff states that a contract was formed between the two parties by which CBRM was obligated to treat all bidders, including A.M.L., fairly and equally, and to act in good faith in awarding the project contract.

According to the plaintiff, the tender call also included an express or implied term that the lowest compliant bid would be accepted.

However, A.M.L. argues the CBRM awarded the contract to another company that did not meet the requirements of the tender because they did not include protocols for exterior blasting as outlined.

A.M.L. was not told that such an alternative would be approved and offers that the approved bidders methods did not meet the requirements for collection, storage, testing and disposal of debris.

A.M.L is now seeking special damages, including loss of profit as a result of the the municipalitys actions.

In a notice of defence filed in late 2014, municipal lawyer, Demetri Kachafanas, the denied the allegations.

California prepares for new life, new look under water restrictions

    - April 3, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

PLEASANTON, Calif. -- In Los Angeles a company called Turf Terminators is busy tearing out lawns and replacing them with gravel and drought resistant plants. It's paid for by a local government program that rebates $3 for every square foot of grass that's gone.

On Thursday Marise Freitas said goodbye to her thirsty lawn.

"We're essentially in a desert and people are maintaining yards like we live in the tropics and it's a silly waste of water," said Freitas.

Startling pictures of the worst drought the region has seen in centuries

"We are on a wave of a new era of landscaping in Southern California, and hopefully in California in general," said Turf Terminators CEO Ryan Nivakoff.

On average 60 percent of domestic water use goes to outdoor irrigation, so that's the obvious place to make the 25 percent reduction.
