Don't let a small space discourage you when looking for your next apartment. Additional space means nothing if it provides little function, which is why you'll be amazed at what creative potential can be found in smaller living spaces. Even if your decorating options seem limited by landlord laws and rental agreements, here are some ideas that might make you rethink a spaces potential.
1. Consider Open Storage If "limited" is a nice way of describing your kitchen storage space, opt for metal shelving units to give off a cool, industrial finish to your apartment. While it's great for essentials like olive oil, fruit, and wine, a few decorative embellishments will really make the storage units serve both functional and decorative uses.
2. Mirror, Mirror on the Wall Mirrors are a basic trick for any interior decorator to add more size and dimension to a room. Mirrors reflect light and make spaces feel bigger. Hang large mirrors across from windows in your apartment's living room, dining room and other rooms so it's in an ideal position to reflect light back into the room.
3. Mount your TV to the Wall Maximize your space by hanging your TV from the wall. This allows you to use your console for more entertaining or storage space, in the area where your TV would have normally sat. This move also makes the TV area look less bulky.
4. Chic Dining If you're working with a really cramped dining nook, clear furniture and glass tables can make the space look less crowded. To visually expand the space even more, hang up some artwork and add wall-mount scones for lighting. Minimizing the amount of furniture and lighting on the ground space will maximize the room's space.
5. Divide and Conquer While this may seem counterintuitive, dividing up floor space into different zones may actually make your apartment seem larger. Use your sofa or consoles to act as "dividers" within a room and create different living spaces within one general room.
Now that your creative juices are flowing, watch Brad Bellflowers reveal of the all-new Apartments.com
Head to Apartments.com and consider these nifty tricks and tips for your next apartment. What you may consider a setback at first sight, could actually become the space you love most in your new apartment.

The city Urban Design Commission approved changes to a rented property on Monroe Street and considered additions to a new engineering operations building and a multi-family apartment development in a Wednesday meeting.
The Madison Theatre Guild requested the committee review an application to make changes to a sign size on rented city property at 2410 Monroe St., originally denied because a 16.5-square-foot sign exceeded the citys maximum of six square feet on a non-residential building in a residential zone.
Vice President Betty Diamond explained in a letter six square feet would not be adequate for the purposes of the Guild.
She said that although the property is located in a residential area, it is very close to commercial areas. There is a functioning gas station next to the rented property, which includes an old firehouse. A commercial area is only a few blocks away.
We believe the current design satisfies the criteria for the [Comprehensive Design Review] process, Diamond said.
The motion for the new sign passed unanimously, and was not discussed further in depth.
Kay Schindel of the city engineering department then presented a proposal for a new addition to the current vehicle storage and maintenance facility at 1600 Emil St.
He said the plan would almost duplicate the area of the existing garage.
Commissioner Tom DeChant raised concerns about the facilitys proximity to a waste dump site, especially whether it would affect traffic flow. Shindel said his company has been negotiating with the city streets department to address the issue.
Several committee members also brought up the varying colors of the building. Their hope for the design was to bring some unity to the color scheme.

Lighting trends show increasing demand for and use of LED light sources. With continued LED lighting innovations, the ability to diffuse light without compromising overall light transmission has become critical, especially for indoor lighting. To address this market need, Altuglas International, a division of Arkema Group, introduces a family of acrylic sheet, Plexiglas MC Diffusion, designed to provide LED luminaire OEMs and optics suppliers with excellent light diffusion performance, along with exceptional light transmission.
Plexiglas MC Diffusion acrylic sheet is available in two grades. Plexiglas MC Diffusion 100 acrylic sheet offers a smoother sheet surface while Plexiglas MC Diffusion 200 acrylic sheet has a textured surface.
Plexiglas MC Diffusion 100 acrylic sheet provides 87 percent light transmission; Plexiglas MC Diffusion 200 acrylic sheet provides 84 percent light transmission. Both grades provide a greater than 95 percent haze to allow for excellent light source hiding capability. The diffusion quality is what makes the sheets exceptional choices for many light source applications. The uniform light distribution softens LED light hotspots and offers the flexibility to place lenses in close proximity to the light source while still diffusing light uniformly.
Plexiglas MC Diffusion sheets, like all standard Plexiglas sheet offerings, exhibit all the fabrication attributes that customers have come to expect. Designing with both grades is easily achieved.
This versatile material can be used in lighting applications for commercial, industrial, residential and professional uses. Besides the typical lighting applications, Plexiglas MC Diffusion acrylic sheets can be used in a wide variety of applications such as skylights, POP displays, store fixtures, signage, and decorative furnishings.
Sheet features include: - Excellent diffusion characteristics - Exceptional light transmission - Lightweight - half the weight of glass - Easily fabricated and thermoformed
Sheet offerings include: - Standard thicknesses of 0.080 and 0.118 - Standard sheet sizes - Customized sizes available upon request
For additional information on Plexiglas MC Diffusion acrylic sheet, visit http://www.plexiglas.com.

Architects selected for UA medical tower
Banner Health has awarded the contract for the design of the new Banner-University Medical Center Tucson hospital tower in Tucson to Shepley Bulfinch architects of Phoenix, in association with GLHN Architects & Engineers Inc. of Tucson. The 11-story tower is scheduled for completion in 2019.
Banners acquisition of University of Arizona Medical Center was finalized on Feb. 27.
Shepley Bulfinch prepared the master plan for the new Banner-UMC facility and completed the hospitals surgical services renovation and expansion in 2013. Elsewhere in Tucson, the firm worked on the development of the Main Gate Overlay District near the UA campus.
Tucson-based GLHN has worked on local projects including the Streetcar Maintenance and Storage Facility and Pima County Courts Complex.
Tucson-based Raytheon Missile Systems has been awarded an Air Force contract worth more than a half-billion dollars to produce advanced air-combat missiles for the U.S. and its allies, according to a Pentagon contract notice.
Under a three-year, $529 million contract, Raytheon will produce an undisclosed number of Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAMs) by early 2018 for the Air Force, the Navy and for foreign military sales. Fiscal 2015 Air Force and Navy production funds totaling $295 million were obligated at the time of award, the Defense Department said.
The AMRAAM is used by 36 allied nations. In December, the Air Force awarded Raytheon a $492 million contract to supply an undisclosed number of AMRAAMs and related equipment in a deal involving sales to South Korea, Oman, Singapore and Thailand.

Courtesy of James C. Lewis The Carlisle, a 36-condo mixed-use building shown here, is planned at the southeast corner of Central and Carlisle SE, now occupied by a small former car wash converted to retail use.
A three-story, 36-condo building to be called The Carlisle with parking and some retail is expected to break ground in the next 35-40 days at the southeast corner of Central and Carlisle SE in the center of Nob Hill.
Veteran Albuquerque builder and developer Kenny Hinkes, who described the buildings architectural style as New Orleans meets Hollywood, said the $8.2 million construction project is aimed primarily at baby boomers who want to move down in size without moving down in quality.
The lot at 3600 Central SE was formerly occupied by a car wash that was converted to shop space with a sloped parking lot. After the current tenant, Ascension Body Modification, relocates April 1 to 1916 Central SE, it will be leveled to create whats often called a garden level, built into the hillside, that will have a 43-space parking structure and 2,000 square feet of retail space.
The upper two stories will have 38,000 square feet of residential condos built in a U shape around a garden courtyard. Although square footages are not yet available, the condos will all be two bedroom/two bath with balconies or patios and separate storage. The building will have a common rooftop patio for residents.
The Carlisle will be just downhill and north of Immanuel Presbyterian Church at 114 Carlisle SE, which was consulted by Hinkes early in his planning process.
Were all for it, said David Cameron, Immanuels pastor. We were hoping something good would happen at that corner. The project will build residential density and create more foot traffic in the neighborhood.
Hinkes has developed both commercial and residential condominiums in Albuquerque, including the three-story, 26-unit residential condo building at 110 Richmond SE, less than a half-mile west of The Carlisle.
Built in 2008 and completed in spring 2009, 110 Richmond went through a lull during the real estate slump but sold out in 2013, Hinkes said.
