LUMBER LIQUIDATORS: Sales would have to crash 27% before we would need more cash (LL)

    - March 13, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Shares of Lumber Liquidators, America's largest specialty hardwood retailer, jumped on Thursday after the company hosted a call to address concerns about its Chinese-manufactured laminate flooring.

The company didn't take any questions on this call. It said folks could submit questions afterward that would be addressed on another call.

Lumber Liquidators' stock was last trading up about 14% after being halted earlier.

Shares of Lumber Liquidators had collapsed about 36% since a damning "60 Minutes" report aired.

On March 1, a "60 Minutes" investigation found that Lumber Liquidatorsappearedto be selling laminate flooring from China with levels of formaldehyde higher than what is permitted under California law. High levels of formaldehyde have been tied to numerous health concerns.

During the conference call, Lumber Liquidators discussed its forecasts. The one important detail that emerged is that management said sales would have to fall 27% before the trouble starts:

Using our conservative estimate of cash on hand at March 31st, reasonable inventory levels and the low end of our capital expenditures outlook, we believe net sales would have to fall 27.0% below 2014, before we would seek liquidity from either our revolving facility or our asset base. As a further reference, this sales level would be 24.0% below 2013, and even 6.4% below 2012.

"Though our trends are only over a short 9-day period of time and therefore subject to change, we do not currently see evidence that would indicate a sustained drop in net sales as severe as 27% below 2014."

The broadcast has affected the business. Lumber Liquidators said its net sales had fallen 7.5% from the same period last year:

Our total net sales in the 9 days following the broadcast are down approximately 7.5% to the same period in 2014, with comparable store net sales down approximately 12.7%. Our open orders remain higher than last year, currently up 12.6% to $45.9 million, and include approximately $5.3 million, or 11.5%, of laminate orders.

Michael Graves, architect and designer, dies at 80

    - March 13, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Architect Michael Graves brought good design to the masses with his product line for Target, helped lead the postmodernist revolt against steel-and-glass boxes, and designed products for disabled people after a spinal cord infection left him in a wheelchair.

Mr. Graves, 80, a winner of the American Institute of Architects' Gold Medal, the highest honor the organization bestows upon an individual, died of natural causes Thursday, March 12, in his hometown of Princeton, N.J., a spokeswoman told The Associated Press.

In the 1980s, reacting to the strictures of sober postwar modernism, Mr. Graves was one of the postmodern architects who reintroduced color, whimsy and decoration to building design. He did so in commissions ranging from a still-controversial municipal office building in Portland, Ore., to an earth-toned Disney hotel festooned with giant sculptures of swans in Florida.

What really put Mr. Graves on the pop culture map was his angular stainless steel teakettle for Alessi, which quickly became a best-seller after its 1985 debut. He scored big again with his 1999 product line for Minneapolis-based Target, which came to encompass more than 2,000 products, including the "Spinning Whistle Teakettle," a simpler and less expensive version of the legendary Alessi teapot.

Through such work, the architect achieved the dream of the German Bauhaus modernists of the early 20th century, spreading the gospel of good design to people of modest means.

"He was the one who popularized it," Chicago architect Stanley Tigerman said Thursday of postmodern design. "He was immensely talented."

Born in Indianapolis, Mr. Graves first achieved notoriety in the 1970s as a member of the "New York Five," a group of architects influenced by the white, modernist buildings of the Swiss-born architect Le Corbusier.

He remained a relatively obscure Princeton University professor until 1980, when he won a design competition for the Portland municipal office building. The squat, midrise structure opened in 1982 with a full complement of decoration, from ersatz ribbons to a large sculpture of the female figure Portlandia.

Critics of a modernist bent derided the design as mere packaging. But the barbs did not stop Mr. Graves from winning other high-profile commissions, such as the Humana corporate headquarters in Louisville, Ky., and a proposed addition to New York's Whitney Museum of Art that was never built.

Mr. Graves got a career-changing break in the late 1990s when Target commissioned him to design scaffolding for the restoration of the Washington Monument.

Construction of Barrie project remains in financial limbo

    - March 13, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Charles Mady says he will seek alternative financing for his downtown Barrie residential/commercial development after its major lender declined to fund the project's completion.

The Laurentian Bank of Canada, through a court-appointed monitor, made that decision public this week about Lakeview Condominiums and Collier Centre, which sits unfinished at 90 Collier/55 Mulcaster streets.

They (Laurentian) want to see if there is someone who will take over their debt, said Mady, CEO of Mady Development, and we're working with two people who have expressed an interest in doing so.

Not banks. Two private equity sources, he said. We're making a few calls. I have a few people working with me.

Jonathan Kreiger, of monitor Grant Thornton Ltd., said this means the project could go forward in one of two ways.

The options are that he (Mady) is going to secure some alternate financing to complete the project, or the project is going to be sold to another developer to complete, Kreiger said.

Laurentian has decided it's not going to fund the balance of construction to completion, but that doesn't mean that the project will not proceed. So what that means is the bank (Laurentian) will consider some further interim financing, to advance the project, but the ultimate full financing for the project is not going to come from Laurentian.

According to Ontario Superior Court of Justice documents, more than $50 million in debt is owed on this project.

Approximately $30 million is owed to Laurentian, $20 million to other creditors and there are $12 million in liens claims registered against the project.

Laurentian Bank could not be reached for comment by the Examiner.

3D Systems and UC Berkeley Bring Stunning 3D-Printed Cement Architectural Structure to Life

    - March 13, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

-- UC Berkeley College of Environmental Design leverages 3DS ColorJetprinting technology for architectural-scale production -- Stunning, intricate geometry underscores creative and commercialpotential of 3D printing for artists, architects and engineers

ROCK HILL, S.C. 3D Systems (NYSE:DDD) today announced the unveiling of "Bloom," a spectacular 3D printed architectural-scale structure created at UC Berkeley using 3DS' ColorJet printing technology. The work of Associate Professor of Architecture Ronald Rael and his graduate student team, the project was unveiled at the fifth annual Berkeley Circus.

Measuring approximately 12' W x 12' D x 9' H, this groundbreaking architectural work is the largest and most precise 3D-printed polymer structure to date. Brought to life by 3DS' ProJet x60 printers, "Bloom" demonstrates how artists, architects and engineers increasingly rely on 3D printing technology to design and produce complex structures with uncompromised speed, cost, accuracy and creative freedom.

"3D printing is emerging as a revolutionary tool in fine art, design and construction," said Cathy Lewis, Chief Marketing Officer, 3DS. "These tools empower everyone to conceive and create any geometry, no matter how complex. 'Bloom' is an inspiring example of the boundless creative and commercial possibilities that these technologies bring."

"Bloom" is a freestanding, organically shaped room built from 840 mass-customized blocks, all of which were 3D printed on the 3DS ProJet x60 using a cement polymer developed by Rael. Because the ProJet x60 series creates incredibly accurate, full-color parts like no other 3D printer can, it allowed the team members to quickly transform their ideas into physical parts. Rael and his collaborators fabricated each unique numbered block using 11 ProJet x60s, and then assembled them by hand. Each block allows varying amounts of light to pass through the wall, creating a dynamic visual effect that interacts with floral patterns on the structure.

"While there are a handful of people currently experimenting with printing 3D architecture, only a few are looking at 3D printing with cement-based materials and all are extruding wet cement through a nozzle to produce rough panels," said Rael. "We are mixing polymers with cement and fibers to produce very strong, lightweight, high-resolution parts on readily available equipment. This project is the genesis of a realistic, marketable process with the potential to transform the way we think about building a structure."

3DS offers a variety of 3D technology that generates new possibilities for architectural planning, visualization and presentation. Using powerful tools like ColorJet printing, desktop drafting on the CubePro and Sense 3D scanning, architects and engineers can communicate their visions and go beyond the blueprint. Go to http://www.3dsystems.com/solutions/architecture-geo to find out more.

After the Berkeley Circus, "Bloom" will tour various locations around the world. For more information about "Bloom" go to http://www.emergingobjects.com.
