Hawkeye Community College planning construction projects this spring

    - February 27, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

WATERLOO | Hawkeye Community College is laying the groundwork for some construction this spring.

The Board of Trustees on Tuesday approved publishing notices the college would be accepting bids for three different projects. They include remodeling of restrooms on both levels of Hawkeye Center, waterproofing and storm sewer replacement at Black Hawk Hall and relocating the colleges child care center to Black Hawk Hall. Work will get underway on the projects in April or May and be finished in August.

The men's and women's restrooms on the first floor of Hawkeye Center would be completely demolished as part of the project and replaced with three individual unisex facilities, each with a baby-changing station. The second floor restrooms will be completely remodeled with plumbing and electrical upgrades plus ceiling and lighting improvements.

The remodeling "will not only make them more modern, but it will make them ADA compliant," said Dan Gillen, Hawkeye's vice president of the administration and finance. "We are continuously trying to improve the facilities." The Americans with Disabilities Act includes standards that ensure access to a restroom for people facing mobility issues, such as using a wheelchair.

Dan Channer of Struxture Architects, who is overseeing design of the plans, said the number of restroom fixtures will be reduced by the remodeling. They will go from six to three on the first floor and 11 to eight on the second floor. Fewer are needed because less people use the restrooms since the cafeteria moved out when the Brock Student Center opened in 2008.

Waterproofing is deteriorating on some of the original parts of Black Hawk Hall that were built in 1974. The west wall and portions of the north wall will be excavated to fix those age-related problems, which have resulted in water leaking into the lower levels of the building. In addition, a retaining wall will be constructed to alleviate heavy water flow at the south entrance.

Channer said during big rainstorms water "is coming around the existing retaining wall and it manages to make its way into the building."

Hawkeye's childhood development center, located in a building across Orange Road from campus, would be expanded as it moves into Black Hawk Hall. Gillen said it will begin serving children from the early infant stage to 18 months old and increase the space available for toddlers and other preschoolers. Nearly 50 children will be served in the facility, up from a little more than 30 now.

The project entails renovating four upper-level classrooms in the northwest corner of the building. Along with four age-appropriate classrooms, the center will have a kitchen, office space and restrooms. The 4,500-square-foot space now contains interior design classrooms and a computer lab. The area is available because the program is ending.

Early childhood education students will be involved with the program. "It's actually a wonderful realignment of our space," said Hawkeye President Linda Allen.

Top judge condemns Shameless actor Elliott Tittensor's loutish behaviour which left a man close to death

    - February 27, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Shameless star Elliott Tittensor has been condemned by a top judge for loutish behaviour which left a young man close to death.

Mr Tittensor used his brand new BMW as a weapon against trainee plumber, Oliver Flint, and drove away, leaving him gravely injured in the road, the High Court was told.

But ever since the row over a mobile phone outside a McDonalds restaurant in Kentish Town, north London, Mr Tittensor claimed he had acted in self-defence.

Mr Justice Edis said Mr Tittensor, 25, had deliberately exaggerated the threat posed by Mr Flint during the 2010 confrontation.

Mr Flint was left brain damaged and blind in one eye after being thrown off the BMWs bonnet and says the incident wrecked his life.

Although his damages have yet to be assessed, he is claiming more than 300,000 from Mr Tittensor - who was not covered by insurance.

The actor is also likely to face legal costs running well into six figures.

The judge said that nothing Mr Flint did justified Mr Tittensor, who played Carl Gallagher in the Shameless comedy series, driving at him in a fury, so that he ended up on the bonnet.

Elliott Tittensor: Shameless' Carl Gallagher used BMW ''as a weapon'' after mobile phone row

    - February 27, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Shameless star Elliott Tittensor has been condemned by a top judge for loutish behaviour which left a young man close to death.

Tittensor, who played Carl Gallagher in the comedy series, used his brand new BMW as a weapon against trainee plumber Oliver Flint and drove away, leaving him gravely injured in the road.

Ever since a row over a mobile phone ended in tragedy, the actor had engaged in an orgy of self-justification, claiming he acted in self-defence.

Mr Justice Edis said Tittensor, 25, had deliberately exaggerated the threat posed by Flint during the 2010 confrontation in Kentish Town, north London.

After the incident, the actor had even resorted to inventing a claim that he believed Flint had a knife.

It was the plumber, not Tittensor, of Heywood, Lancashire, who was in grave and immediate danger of being killed as the actor swerved to throw him off his bonnet.

Flint started the row outside a McDonalds restaurant after Tittensor twice refused to let him borrow his mobile phone.

But the judge said: What followed was, I believe, a loutish shouting match in a public street between two men who were behaving badly.

Scene: Mr Flint tended to after attack

Although Flint had been threatening and intimidating - banging his fist on the BMWs bonnet - that in no way justified the actor using the car as a weapon.

McFarland, BHC: Plumber ran for team depicted in new movie

    - February 27, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

BULLHEAD CITY Inspired by a true story, the Disney movie McFarland, USA follows coach Jim White as he forms a championship-winning cross country team with a crew of unlikely runners from a predominantly Latino high school in small-town California.

It is a true story, said Felix Gonzalez, owner of Gonzos Plumbing. Its also my story. Coach White changed my life.

Gonzalez was, in his words, a troubled kid.

I was born in Compton, California, he said. I ran the streets of Los Angeles and was heading in a bad direction when my mom moved us to McFarland in 1981. Thats where everything changed for me.

Moving to a small farming town was tough for the big-city boy.

I was a bully in the seventh grade, Gonzalez said. I was picking on a kid, taking his lunch money when a man came up to me, put his hand on my shoulder and said, We dont do that at this school.

That man was Coach Jim White.

He told me he wanted me to come run with his team after school, Gonzales said. For some reason, I showed up and I ran with the team. Coach White saw something in me that day and I got a new direction.

White told the young Gonzalez that he had done as well as some of the top runners on the team.

He told me I was good at something, Gonzales said. Every assembly, Coach White would tell everyone I was the most improved runner. Not the best runner, the most improved. It taught me so much I learned I could always improve and I learned that I could succeed.

Beauty and the Pest: Flowers kill Aedes

    - February 27, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

An expert says the changing urban landscape requires a refining of dengue-control methods.

PETALING JAYA: One of the most effective ways of combating dengue is to beautify the environment with flowering plants, according an environmental health expert.

Veeramohan Supramaniam, a spokesman for the Malaysian Association of Environmental Health (MAEH), said mosquitoes would often become sluggish upon feeding on nectar, making them easy prey to bigger insects, spiders, frogs and lizards.

We have to re-establish these creatures in the urban landscape with flowering decorative plants rather than palm trees and cactii that dont flower, he told FMT in a recent interview.

He said the relevant authorities are moving towards such a change.

Veeramohan, through MAEH, has been conducting field research and epidemiological studies to learn more about the dengue threat and is engaged in advising the authorities on ways to refine the existing prevention programme, which is based on World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines.

He said the WHO guidelines focused on outbreaks at residential units. He acknowledged that programmes based on those guidelines had helped contain the dengue menace, but only to some extent.

With the changing urban landscape of Malaysia, he said, the old paradigm has to be questioned and re-tested and a method taking account of new research and data should be applied.

    Pioneer methods

He said a dengue outbreak was something totally preventable.

New Sparrow Charmer & Sparrow Sky Trap Combo Delivers One-Two Punch to Sparrow Problem

    - February 27, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Irvine, CA (PRWEB) February 27, 2015

Bird B Gone, the leader in bird control products for commercial, industrial and residential applications now offers an effective and humane combo of sparrow control products that deliver a on-two punch to this bird problem. Rarely have two new products been so effectively dovetailed to solve a nagging bird problem.

Sparrow Charmer Bird Caller Lures them

This device lures sparrows into a bird trap by broadcasting Bird B Gones proprietary sparrow call. Field tested and scientifically proven to attract sparrows, Sparrow Charmer is deal for use in Big Box and retail stores, warehouses, or any large indoor or outdoor space where pest sparrows are present. The device features separate remote control functions up to 150 meters away. A volume control varies the output up to 170 db. The call emitted will attract sparrows as far away as two acres. A built-in speaker with push-button controls makes operation fast and easy. An additional speaker is available to extend the callers coverage. The caller plays its luring calls for up to 18 continuous hours. A rechargeable lithium battery provides both convenience and economy. The Sparrow Charmer comes complete with mounting clip, remote control USB cord, USB power adapter and power cord.

Sparrow Sky Trap Humanely Captures Them

Working in tandem with the Sparrow Charmer, this highly effective sky trap has been specially designed to capture sparrows in high traffic areas. The hanging trap features a proven V-top entry design that allows it to hang from the ceiling or sit on a flat surface. The pop-up feature makes this trap 24 x 12 x18 high. A wider/longer pan (30 x 16) captures droppings or other debris that may fall from the inside the trap. The trap and slide-out pan (made of heavy 26 gauge sheet metal) can be easily cleaned. It includes perches and water/feed containers inside to calm birds after capture.

Sparrows: a Nagging Nuisance to Property Owners

Prolific throughout the lower 48 states, house sparrows have a 6-inch wingspan and are typically 5-6 inches long. They will often hop on tables, benches and chairs of open-air restaurants to scrounge for leftovers and dropped crumbs. The birds will look for convenient nesting sites and open trash containers. House sparrows are not tidy or clean. Their droppings are both unsightly and unsanitary, carrying such diseases as chlamydiosis, salmonellosis, Newcastle disease, toxoplasmosis and transmissible gastroenteritis. Bird droppings around restaurants can lead to health code violations. Nesting sparrows can also be disturbingly noisy. Most house sparrows strongly prefer to nest in the vents, attic vent louvers, crevices, and under eaves of buildings. Some restaurant owners have tried stuffing their dryer, attic and fan vents with screens, but when these become blocked with leaves and other debris, they can eventually create serious venting problems. Bird B Gones Sparrow Charmer & Sparrow Sky Trap Combo effectively and humanely gets rid of the sparrow problem.

Bird B Gone is the worlds largest manufacturer and distributor of bird control products, providing effective and humane solutions to a bird-free environment. The company provides advice, training and installation services for those who need help with these and other bird control measures.

Growers ask cricket fans to leave fruit at home

    - February 27, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

New Zealands commercial fruit and vegetable growers are asking everyone going to the World Cup Cricket match at Eden Park tomorrow to help smash an unwanted Aussie visitor for a six.

The industry that takes every opportunity to promote healthy eating is taking the unusual step of asking fans not to take fresh fruit or vegetables with them into the stadium.

This request comes in the wake of last weeks discovery of a small localised population of Queensland fruit flies in the Auckland suburb of Grey Lynn.

Eden Park, the venue for Saturdays World Cup Cricket clash between Australia and New Zealand, is right on the border of the controlled area.

This means no fruit and vegetable material can be taken out of the stadium.

"We are asking cricket fans to leave their fruit and vegetables at home when they head to the stadium," Horticulture New Zealand chief executive Peter Silcock says.

"You know it must be a serious situation if we are asking people NOT to have fruit and vegetables."

Three industry groups have joined together to pay for a full page advertisement in todays New Zealand Herald to ask cricket fans not to take fruit to the ground.

"We feel it is the most pragmatic approach. It makes sense to ask people not to take food into the ground which would ultimately need to be thrown away as they were leaving," Pipfruit New Zealand chief executive Alan Pollard says.

The horticulture industry is united in its support of the Ministry for Primary Industries response to the fruit fly.
