Message sent on Ord Stage 2 expansion

    - February 27, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

MG Corp chairman Des Hill says it's important that the Knox Plain development of Ord Stage 2 proceeds this year as planned.

Traditional owners of Ord Stage 2 land have travelled to Canberra to stress the importance of Federal environmental approvals for the project to meet its timeline.

MG Corporation directors Des Hill and Ted Hall made the trip on behalf of all traditional owners, meeting the Department of Environment about the required approval and potential conditions for development of the next stage, Knox Plain.

Late last year, Chinese-backed developer Kimberley Agricultural Investment indicated it would be important for its land-clearing program to stay ahead of farm development work.

General manager Jim Engelke said this would require a smooth transition from work at Goomig Plain to land clearing at the 6000ha Knox Plain lot.

Mr Hill, MG's chairman, agreed it was an important that the Knox Plain development proceeded in 2015 as planned, with works expected to start in September.

"If we can achieve that then continuous work for the staff building the Ord expansion could occur," he said.

"MG is aware of the need for scale to make the agricultural sector robust and we know we, along with the WA Government, need to play our part in helping with that.

"Like all people, the MG people want and expect to see the environment well managed and we think we can do that and still have the development."

Mr Hall said the pair discussed the need for freehold title to the buffer land to be transferred to MG Corporation to enable it to use the land into the future.

Youll always get people stereotyping you. But actually all the WAGs are quite hot and cool, so at my age Im pretty pleased.

Ive always wanted to make my own money. As a little girl, Id look at magazines and think, I want that I want to be successful and have nice things. As an only child I was very independent I believe you can always get what you want if you have your health and work hard enough.

DPP appeals 18-year jail term of Stuart Rattle's killer, saying it's 'manifestly inadequate'

    - February 27, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Director of Public Prosecutions is appealing against the 18-year jail sentence handed to the man who murdered well-known interior designer Stuart Rattle, saying it was manifestly inadequate.

Michael O'Neill, known as the "The Talented Mr Ripley" because of the way he constantly lied, was jailed on February 11 for 18 years with a non-parole period of 13 years for killing his long-time partner.

Supreme Court Justice Elizabeth Hollingworth found O'Neill, 48, had been in a "fragile psychological state" when he hit Mr Rattle over the head with a saucepan at the couple's South Yarra apartment at 6am on December 4, 2013, before strangling him with a dog lead as he begged for his life.

O'Neill claimed he snapped after Mr Rattle, 53, called him a "frigid bitch" for refusing to have sex with him that morning.

He placed Mr Rattle's body inside a large furniture bag and left it on their bed for the rest of the week as he went about his normal routine before returning on Sunday night, December 8, to set fire to the apartment.

Chief Crown prosecutor Gavin Silbert, SC, said O'Neill, who pleaded guilty to charges of murder and arson, had killed Mr Rattle to try to cover up his incompetence, which had been threatening to bankrupt the interior designer's business.

O'Neill had been responsible for accounts, quoting, invoicing and ordering stock for clients.

    The old and the beautiful

    - February 27, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Tara MacDonald and Justin Inglis got a lot of crazy looks when they decided that a stripped bare, yellow- shingled, 150-year-old house near Hubbards was their dream home.

"It would have been way easier to tear it down. People told us, just start from scratch," says Inglis about the then-derelict building on the Aspotogan Peninsula. "You had to squint your eyes very hard to see the beauty."

With broken windows, no water or electricity and a collection of animal tenants, the house was in rough shape to say the least, which made even getting a mortgage a challenge. But thanks to creativity from all angles and 13 months of hard work, the pair re-built its first home together so that it reflects both its history and their personalities.

"We wanted a wood-shingled house, we wanted it on the water, we wanted to live the Nova Scotian lifestyle," says MacDonald of how their search led them to the well-worn home.

"As soon as we stepped into that house I got good vibes. It needed to be loved. It needed to have somebody to look after it, to be able to do it a bit of justice, there's a lot of history there," adds Inglis. "It's very much part of the landscape, you see it when you come around the cove, and its ridiculously important to make it like it belongs there."

Apart from the four acres of land and killer view, the main selling point of the home was its bones. The beauty of working with a gutted house was that it was immediately obvious that the building was as solid as they come. So after pulling hundreds of square-headed nails from the walls, one by one, the pair got to the less glamourous fixes like windows, wiring and insulation.

"There's so much money," says Inglis, "you have to put in before you see anything---" "---anything fun," says MacDonald, finishing his sentence.

But eventually, once the basics were taken care of and rooms were framed out, their vision started to manifest. Apart from opening the concept of the home, the team that worked on the house kept things rustic looking, flooring the downstairs with barn board floor rescued from a house in Milford, restoring its original floors upstairs, along with the staircase---and bringing in an old railing from another house in Lunenburg to match---and re-shingling the entire house by hand. MacDonald and Inglis also enlisted the help of Sappho Griffin and Denise Coulter of henhouse for a kitchen makeover fit for the rustic reno.

"We were really lucky to find people who were up for it. One of the biggest challenges is trying to convince people of your ideas," says Inglis, who took the creative helm of the project but had hardwork and help from carpenters Ira Stevens and Hazen Emms, who were committed to helping restore the rich history of the home.

"It's amazing what you can do," says MacDonald. "You just have to stick with the vision."

NFPA urges public to keep fire safety in mind during the winter months

    - February 27, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Home heating equipment is the second leading cause of U.S. home fires and home fire deaths

    Published Jan 28, 2015 at 10:43 am (Updated Jan 28, 2015)

During the winter months, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) urges the public to use added caution when heating their homes. Home heating equipment is the second leading cause of U.S. home fires and home fire deaths, with January being one of the three leading months for home heating fires. In addition, improperly used or malfunctioning heating equipment can create carbon monoxide (CO), a poisonous, potentially fatal gas in the home.

Unattended heating equipment is the leading cause of home heating fires, said Lorraine Carli, NFPAs vice president of Outreach and Advocacy. She urges people to monitor all heating equipment carefully, particularly space heaters. Whether portable or stationary, space heaters account for one-third (33 percent) of home heating fires and four out of five (81 percent) of home heating fire deaths on average per year.

Also, with the potential for power outages during snow storms, Carli strongly encourages people to have flashlights and battery-powered lighting at the ready never use candles to light a home.

NFPA offers the following safety precautions to greatly reduce the risk of home heating fires and carbon monoxide poisoning:

Heating Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from heating equipment. This includes furnaces, fireplaces, wood stoves and portable space heaters.

If there are children in your home, create a three-foot kid-free zone around space heaters and open fires.

Never use your oven to heat your home.

For fuel-burning space heaters, always use the right kind of fuel, as specified by the manufacturer.
