LAPORTE | A teenager who was allegedly paid $15 in gas to drive a drug dealer around to make deliveries of heroin in LaPorte could now face up to 30 years in prison.
Taylor Hensell, 19, of LaPorte and Warren Parker, 21, of Chicago, were arrested Thursday when police intercepted a drug deal in the 200 block of A Street in LaPorte, said Harlan Williams, commander of the LaPorte Metro Operations Unit.
Police said they seized crack cocaine and heroin with a street value of more than $4,000, enough to supply more than 100 customers, they said.
Parker is charged with two counts of dealing cocaine or a narcotic drug.
Hensell is charged with one count of aiding, inducing or causing dealing on cocaine or a narcotic drug.
The arrests are part of an ongoing effort to break up drug organizations from Chicago that started moving into LaPorte last summer, said Williams.
The groups hire dealers to go into surrounding communities to sell drugs, police said.
Traditionally, drug dealers in both counties are often addicts looking to fund their own habits or from Chicago who come here independently to make money.
Since Jan. 1, though, Williams said nine members of drug-dealing organizations have been taken into custody here while in just the past two weeks more than 13 others have been identified and could be arrested soon.
According to police, Hensell agreed to drive Parker to his customers after receiving only gas money.

Installing a clean-out port in your drain lines can save considerable headache, expense and, in some cases, a very messy situation. A clean-out allows you to easily access the drain line in the event of a clog, and in some applications can prevent flooding inside your home. If properly placed, the clean-out may also be used when pumping out the septic tank for routine cleaning.

The Pittston Memorial Library will have a new childrens wing and community room by mid-June.
Construction on the library expansion project is on schedule, library Director Anne Hogya said.
Its doing very well, she said.
Ms. Hogya said construction should wrap up by June 15. The additions walls have already gone up, and crews have started to install windows, getting closer every day to a new space for the librarys youngest patrons.
The 5,175-square-foot expansion will include a dedicated childrens wing and a community room featuring smartboards with videoconferencing capabilities.
The librarys current design lacks sufficient space for children to use, Ms. Hogya said, with only a small section dedicated on the main floor.
The new wing will encompass 2,500 square feet of the expansion and contain space for children to play, computers, a specific room for children and teen programming, and educational murals depicting Pennsylvanias wildlife.
The new childrens wing will be outfitted with all sorts of interactive play toys for the kids, Ms. Hogya said. Well be planning more childrens programs.
The rest of the expansion will house a community room that local groups can rent and use for meetings and functions, Ms. Hogya said. It will include a main room, a small kitchenette, a coat room, wireless Internet access and a smartboard Anything you would need for any type of business or community function, Ms. Hogya said.
The library will be taking reservations to rent the room within a month or so, she said.

A boat glides along a river where construction workers build a bridge for the Don Sahong hydropower dam site in southern Laos last year. INTERNATIONAL RIVERS
Conservation groups have called on Prime Minister Hun Sen to address the elephant in the room and lobby Laos president to postpone his countrys controversial Don Sahong dam project when the leaders meet later this week.
Arriving on Thursday, Laotian Head of State Choummaly Sayasone will spend two days in Phnom Penh on an official visit at the invitation of Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In addition to Hun Sen, Sayasone will meet National Assembly President Heng Samrin and Vice-President Say Chhum.
WWF Greater Mekong director Teak Seng said Hun Sen should seize the opportunity to press for a postponement of the Don Sahong dam, one of 12 hydropower projects currently being planned for the lower stretches of the Mekong, as more studies are conducted about its impact, particularly on fish migration.
This is the main outstanding issue, the elephant in the room, between Laos and Cambodia, Seng said.
This is a great opportunity for Cambodia to put its position forward and request more studies before construction.
Lying less than 2 kilometres north of the Lao-Cambodian border, the 260-megawatt project could have deleterious effects on shared waterways and fisheries.
Conservation groups also maintain the dam will jeopardise Cambodias Irrawaddy Dolphin population.
Following six months of consultations, the four lower Mekong countries Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand and Laos referred the issue to the Mekong River Commission Council.

With tax season comes good news for some restaurant developers in downtown Allentown: The taxes they paid on alcohol last year can be recaptured and used to pay off their construction loans.
But their gain is the state's loss, critics note, as millions in newfound tax revenue are removed from the public coffers.
The gaggle of new restaurants that opened last year in Allentown's Neighborhood Improvement Zone around PPL Center can file for the first time to apply the 24 percent tax they paid at state stores to their building debts. And the benefit, which the state Department of Revenue spelled out in guidelines in November, doesn't just apply to Allentown's NIZ.
It also will help developers in Bethlehem's City Revitalization and Improvement Zone as they try to emulate the success of the NIZ.
"Twenty-four percent that's a big number and a big help when you're trying to make the financing come together," said Dennis Benner, whose proposed developments along Third and Fourth streets in Bethlehem's CRIZ could have as many as 10 restaurants. "It's really important that the state has made this decision."
Giving developers access to the alcohol tax money is appropriate, said state Sen. Pat Browne, R-Lehigh, who wrote the NIZ law. That money wouldn't exist, he noted, if not for the restaurant and bar sales inside the NIZ.
"This is not a windfall for those developers, and it's not a change in the law," Browne said. "It was in the law, and always the intent of the law from its inception."
It's a tax some developers worried they could not tap because it was generated outside the special taxing zones, but they were reassured last fall after the Department of Revenue reviewed the matter. The state hasn't made any major change but clarified the intent of the NIZ law adopted in 2011, Browne said.
Most state tax revenues generated within the 127-acre NIZ can be harnessed by the property owner to pay off building projects that create jobs. It's perhaps the most generous tax incentive ever offered by Pennsylvania and has spurred $1 billion of new development in Allentown, including a hockey arena at Seventh and Hamilton streets.
It's been so successful that it served as the model for similar tax zones in Lancaster and Bethlehem, where the CRIZ features similar tax incentives, with a few added restrictions.
