Horizons Regional Councils pest plant team hosted two international students on the hunt for bio-control insects last week.
Horizons environmental officer plants Neil Gallagher says bio-control is a technique used worldwide to restore balance between a weed and the environment by recruiting some of its key natural enemies.
"Pest plants that have been introduced to New Zealand are often not considered a weed in their home country because there are bio-agents there to control them," he says.
"If it can be determined what these agents are, they can be released in key areas to help fight against weeds such as california thistle, nodding thistle and woolly nightshade. Our team has been active in getting bio-agents established in the Region so were more than happy to host students studying bio-control."
Darwin Hickman from the University of Birmingham and Cecilia Falla-Mata from Guatemala were taken to sites by Horizons staff where a number of bio-control beetles, flies and bugs had been released.
"Our team is really keen to learn everything we can about bio-control. So while assisting Darwin and Cecilia with their visit and helping them collect data, we were also soaking up any new information they could share in order to increase the success of the programme," says Mr Gallagher.
"We took the students to Pohangina Valley, Ohingaiti and Utiku and were pleased to find thistle bio-agents had taken a noticeable toll on pasture weeds. In particular the Pohangina site showed at least 50 per cent of thistles were damaged by green thistle beetles and reducing the amount of thistle present."
Mr Gallagher says New Zealands bio-control programme is recognised internationally as being an efficient, safe and robust system.
"The impressive thing about our programme is that using bio-agents hasnt impacted negatively on our native plants or agricultural and horticultural crops. This is one of the reasons why students are coming here to see how things work."

CONVENIENCE store owner Ruta Jebremussie believes she will be better off on benefits after burglars broke in to steal 4,000 of cigarettes, spirits and groceries.
The 35-year-old opened MTH Sisters Mini Mart off-licence, in Sneyd Green,12 months ago after moving to England from East Africa in 2010 to make a fresh start with her three children.
But Ruta has been left so dismayed after being targeted by burglars last week she is considering giving up the store and signing on instead.
She said: I am very sad because Ive put a lot into the business.
I think they may have stolen about 4,000 worth of stock and I am not insured so I dont know how I am going to be able to carry on.
I think I will have to go back to the job centre.
In this country you work or you dont work, either way it is the same.
"I am trying to make a living and nobody is helping and it's hard.
If I can borrow money I will stay open but if dont work how can I pay my rent?

A Texas jury will soon decide on Eddie Ray Rouths next home: a maximum-security prison cell or a room with an open door and no lock.
Rouths defense attorneys have argued that their client is not guilty because he was insane when he killed Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle and his friend Chad Littlefield in February 2013. But lawyers who have staged similar defenses say it will be a hard sell to jurors, in part because they are told little about what comes after an insanity verdict, and how Rouths life in a state hospital would differ from life in prison.
The upshot: Routh would have more freedom at a state hospital and could be let out at some point. He would have a regimented life and difficulty convincing doctors and a judge that he should be released permanently.
But its not prison.
Our mission is treatment and recovery, not punishment, said Carrie Williams, a spokeswoman for the Texas Department of State Health Services. Our whole focus is empowering patients to become responsible for their own lives.
Routh would go to one of two state mental health maximum-security facilities. Both are in small towns: Rusk, in East Texas, and Vernon, near the Panhandle.
Once inside the secured perimeters, it looks very much like a local community college, Williams said.
The hospitals have regimented days, regular shower times and jobs such as janitorial work or gardening. They have classes, such as those that deal with social skills, anger management and life skills.
Patients can learn about their illnesses, medication and treatments. Their rooms, with twin-size beds and a small wardrobe, are bathed in soothing colors. The doors stay open. There is TV, but not in the bedroom. The Internet is restricted. Cellphones and other contraband arent allowed.
David Self, retired chief of the forensic unit at Rusk State Hospital, said the daily programming is both therapeutic and good for security.
