Jason Allen Burns of Attleboro, a self-employed construction worker, died Wednesday at home due to complications with diabetes. He was 37.
Born in Attleboro, Mr. Burns was a lifelong resident. He was raised and educated in town and raised his children in Attleboro as well.
Mr. Burns was self-employed in construction for many years, with several years spent working for Jay Cashman on his private island off of Chatham. He specialized in drywall installation and was always helping family and friends with construction projects.
Mr. Burns enjoyed the time spent with close family and friends. He loved camping and riding ATVs, not only with his children, but with his nephew and his friends children. On most weekends, he and his brother would host cookouts and work on projects together at home with friends.
In addition to time spent with his family, Mr. Burns treasured times spent deep-sea fishing with his mother and brother, listening to country music, and relaxing around a bonfire with family and friends and roasting marshmallows with the kids.
Mr. Burns is survived by three children, Jordan, Janessa and Julian Coburn, all of Attleboro; his mother, Sandra Ellen (Ebert) of Attleboro; a brother, Shawn M. of Attleboro; his companion, Emily F. Smith; a nephew and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. today at Dyer-Lake Funeral Home, North Attleboro.
Private burial will be in Newell Burying Ground, South Attleboro.

SAN BERNARDINO: Volunteers help create home for family of five
A vacant lot, a remnant from the Old Fire in 2003 that destroyed hundreds of homes in this citys northeast corner, is being transformed into a three-bedroom, two-bath home by Habitat for Humanity of the San Bernardino area and its dedicated corps of volunteers.
The beneficiaries of this project will be Gus and Melissa Calderon and their three children, Arianna, 16, Isaac, 11, and Johnathon, 7, who along with friends and relatives are putting in 500 hours of sweat equity themselves to see the home finished.
Habitat for Humanity depends on organizations and individuals who donate their time, talent and even building supplies to help see this and other similar projects to fruition.
On Feb. 7, eight volunteers, five of them from First Evangelical Lutheran Church, in Redlands, were on hand to hammer, saw, measure and cut building materials as the 1,170 square-foot house with a two-car garage takes shape.
They continued to put the finishing touches on framing the rooms inside the house and install a thermal barrier on the roof in preparation for installation of roofing, wiring and insulation and other chores that precede putting up sheetrock and closing in the house.
First Lutheran member and Redlands resident Jeanne Fortier said this is my fifth or sixth house. Allan (Griesemer) and I worked on the roof the last time.
Normally Rick Miles, with the church, is one of the last ones in and the last one out on Habitat homes because he specializes in phone and computer wiring, but he was present this day to help with nailing wood support beams and wall stud stabilizers.
Griesemer, another Redlands resident and First Lutheran member, was the dean of the group. My work with Habitat goes back 15 or 20 years. Ive been involved in helping build six or seven houses. Ive been involved in all stages, including digging trenches.
Church member Gerri Licke drove from her Corona home hoping to either get in on drywall installation or paint. I like to paint, she said. The house hadnt progressed that far so she chipped in helping carry wood beams, holding nails for long-time volunteer Barbara Herold to hammer into the wood.

Viburnum Dense Fence. Picture: Ozbreed
With green spaces becoming smaller and smaller for urban dwellers, the search is on for more compact and hardier plant choices.
Some people are opting out all together for a garden and putting in paving and fake grass, but they will be increasing the temperature around their house by at least six degrees and creating a desolate, dead environment.
One of the toughest spots for new homeowners is what to use as a screening plant for the narrow strip between houses. The good news is as long as you can make a garden bed 20-30cm wide, you can grow a green screen.
Below are three great plants to use:
Viburnum Dense Fence is a new compact form of Vibernum odoratissimum with lush green foliage and fragrant flowers in spring. The new growth is bronze/red. It can grow to 3.5m but can be pruned to 1.8m. Dense Fence will grow in full sun or part shade.
Banksia Sentinel is a beautiful narrow-growing banksia with large lemon-coloured flowers that the birds will come to enjoy for months. It's perfect for a narrow driveway or down the side of the house. It will grow in light shade, growing to 2m tall and less than a metre wide.
Leptospermum Starry Night has shiny black-purple foliage and gets covered in starry white flowers its a knockout. The little insectivore birds love it because of the insects it attracts with the pollen. It will grow in full sun or part shade and grows to around 2m high and 1.5m wide.
Reader tip
I have found the perfect mulch. Champagne corks. They shade the soil and reduce wind speed across the surface. Can be applied to various depth which can easily be adjusted. Reduce evaporation. Are light and non water absorbent. Can be easily moved then replaced for new plantings. Last for at least 20 years. At an average of $15 per bottle (i.e. per cork) with 120 corks per pot, thats $1800 a pot or $7200 per sq metre they are not cheap. But fun to "collect". Hic.

Buyers interested in purchasing affordable new homes have far fewer selections than they did just a few years ago, a new study shows.
The number of new Orlando-area homes priced at $150,000 or less shrank to just 282 during the fourth quarter. Three years earlier, buyers had triple the offerings in that range, according to research firm MetroStudy. While construction has eased off lower-priced homes, it has ramped up on the high end. New homes priced at more than $500,000 ballooned to 637 during the fourth quarter from 112 three yearsearlier.
And housing starts in the Metro Orlando area's most popular price range $250,000 to $299,000 have quadrupled during the last three years.
"I think what you're seeing is a shift," said Sean Strickler, vice president of sales for Pulte Homes in Orlando. Builders are no longer able to pick up the deals on property that had languished following the 2007 housing bust and was then sold off at a discount by lenders, he added.
What is not increasing much are Central Florida wages. The region's median income increased 1.2 percent to $56,193 in December from a year earlier, according to the federal government. Even though price increases for new homes were unavailable, existing home price for the core Orlando market increased 6 percent during the last year.
The price growth has forced builders to move away from first-time buyers and chase a pool of move-up buyers. Housing starts for last year were pretty flat from 2013, according to the MetroStudy report. The firm researches new-housing permits, starts and occupancy.
Builders facing a trio of higher land costs, reinstated impact fees, and rising labor prices have been able to tap out-of-market buyers. Buyers from higher-priced markets in the North have been able to sell their homes for a profit that they are willing to use as a down payment, Strickler said, as well as international buyers.
One factor softening the blow of fast-rising prices is that interest rates continue to be at historically low levels, which keeps monthly payments more affordable, said Anthony Crocco, regional director for MetroStudy. In December, interest rates on a 30-year mortgage were 3.86 percent.
Fast-rising land prices have also started to slow a building spree in Winter Park, where custom builders have razed dozens and dozens of old houses in recent years in order to build new ones. Winter Park infill lots are quickly becoming so pricey that builders are seeking individual lots to other neighborhoods.
"In Winter Park ZIP codes, the market is softening because of price growth but you will see a push out to College Park, Colonialtown, and Lake Eola Heights," Crocco said.
