PV Middle School has been hooked up to sewer system

    - February 6, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Remains from the past have frequently been unearthed in the area surrounding Pequannock Valley Middle School. Indian artifacts, objects from Revolutionary War encampments, not to mention an occasional fossil have been found on the grounds.

Now another relic from a previous era septic tanks are going to be addressed.

Last August, P.V. School became the last township school to be hooked up to sewers as the township's overall project to install sewers on the east side of town neared completion. The school was attached to the system at a cost of $114,000.

Now the school district will be looking at ways to get the old tanks emptied and filled with sand, a process referred to as "decommissioning."

District Business Administrator Barbara Decker said there is not particular rush to do the work, as the tanks are sealed and present no health or safety issues. But she said it should be done as soon as practical, probably during the summer when school is closed.

The great mystery is just what's underground. Decker said there are seven tanks, each with a capacity of 2,000 to 2,500 gallons. Because of scant record-keeping going back to the 1950s, the exact size of the tanks can't be determined, but the process is pretty straightforward as the same volume of material pumped out will be replaced with the same amount to fill it.

The tanks will be filled with a sand material that is approved by the state Department of Environmental Protection, Decker said. The sand pumped into the tanks will absorb any remaining material, and will eventually hardens.

Decker said bids for the work will be solicited and that if possible, personnel from the district could possibly perform the work during the summer.

"We could save some money if we did it ourselves," Decker said.

The process takes only a day or two, she said. Because the work would involve having several trucks on the school grounds, she said it is preferable to do it while school is not in session.

Adams County sells 60 Charnita properties

    - February 6, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

A sprawling resort community was once expected to surround Liberty Mountain, near Carroll Valley.

Cabins were supposed to be built on small land plots that would dot the mountainside. Retirees would flee to the area to enjoy various nearby recreation opportunities.

But it never quite happened as it was envisioned.

Charnita, as Liberty Mountain Resort was known in the 1960s, was named after its owners, Charles and Anita Rist, according to the Resort's website. The Rists started to build a rustic residential development, but they went bankrupt in the 1970s.

Snow Time Inc., owners of Ski Roundtop, bought Charnita. After that, properties that were once thought ripe for development were left vacant. With delinquent taxes piling up on them, county officials have begun selling them through the county's unsold property repository.

Commissioners approved final sale prices for 60 properties this week. School district and municipal officials have to offer their approval as well on the properties' final sale prices.

One property is priced at $15,000, three are listed around $1000. The rest range from $300 to $800.

Many of the properties have failed to pass percolation tests required to install septic systems, county officials said. That is partially why the planned development never fully materialized decades ago.

When the Charnita development was conceptualized in the 1960s, what is now Carroll Valley Borough did not have development guidelines like the ones in place today, said Jim Martin, Adams County commissioner. There was no thought of percolation, he said.

But buying adjacent tracts allows neighboring property owners to acquire bigger yards, driveways or possibly obtain a property that is fit for water and sewer hookups.

Can a Chinese billionaire build a canal across Nicaragua?

    - February 6, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

PUNTA BRITO, Nicaragua One of the largest engineering projects in history would start here, on this desolate and pristine crescent of dark-sand Pacific beach.

From in front of the hammock-swinging shrimpers on the porches of their tin-and-wood shanties, the trench would run east in sinuous curves up through the mangroves and banana fields until it reaches the shores of Central Americas largest freshwater lake, then cut across the Caribbean highlands and through indigenous territory, ending its journey 172 miles away on the beaches of the Atlantic.

They call it the Grand Inter-Oceanic Canal: an audacious $50billion plan by an obscure Chinese billionaire to cross Central America and challenge the Panama Canal for the worlds cargo traffic. And some in Nicaragua are gearing up for the fight of their lives to stop it.

For a country as poor as Nicaragua, said Roonell Carrillo, a cattle farmer who works along the proposed canal route, this is an enormous risk.

Last month, on a riser erected next to Carrillos farm, the son of President Daniel Ortega, the former Marxist guerrilla, stood alongside Wang Jing, a Chinese telecom magnate, to herald the official start of construction. In reality, little physical work is being done besides widening access roads, and major doubts remain about many aspects of the project, including whether Wang can afford to build it.

    Massive canal project in Nicaragua

Wang Jing, a Chinese billionaire, plans to build a canal across Nicaragua to challenge Panama for the worlds cargo traffic. The canal would be three times as long as Panamas and able to accommodate larger ships. Opponents of the project worry what the regional impact will be if the proposed Grand Inter-Oceanic Canal is ever built.

According to interviews with Chinese media, Wang was born in 1972 in Beijing, studied traditional Chinese medicine, and worked as a school principal. Then he joined a government-affiliated telecom company that went private in 2009. His firm grew rapidly into the largest privately owned science and technology company listed on the Chinese stock market and made him one of the countrys richest men.

President Ortega granted Wangs canal company, HK Nicaragua Canal Development Investment Co. Ltd, or HKND Group, a 50-year concession, which would give Nicaragua only a small return $10million a year for the first decade of operation, then increasing percentages of the profits in subsequent years. But even Wangs Nicaraguan construction partners know little about his other investors or whether the Chinese government, which has denied involvement, is backing the project.

It would be a relief for me to know that the Chinese government was behind this rather than just an entrepreneur, said Benjamin Lanzas, head of Nicaraguas construction industry group, who has met Wang and whose company has contracts for parts of the project. For one investor, thats a lot of money.

Parishioners say their prayers have been answered

    - February 6, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

MITCHELL CO., GA (WALB) - An Albany construction company will volunteer its services to rebuild aMitchell County church building, which was destroyed by fire.

The Pastor of Beautiful Light Baptist Church says he has been praying for a miracle, and now he feels Kendell Crawford was sent to answer those prayers.Senior Pastor Reverend Rogers Chatmon said, "Our ambition is to rebuild."

Beautiful Light Baptist Church was destroyed by fire January 24th. The 140 year old church only has about a dozen active members, including Mary Marcus, who has attended all 73 years of her life.

Marcus said "Lord, I'm still hurting because this is my heart down here."

Crawford Construction owner Kendell Crawford now has stepped forward to help rebuild the church,

Crawford said "This is not a nightclub. This is the Lord's church. I think it's only proper and fitting that the community come together and help the church. Give a donation. Give some time."

Crawford said he has already talked with material suppliers and contractors, getting pledges for the materials and people needed to rebuild the burned out building. Reverend Chatmon says God is answering his prayers."We are determined to continue to have church. And work to save souls for the Lord.First move we will have to make is demolition the building. Take it down and come back up."

Members say the church building was battered by a tornado in 1978. Now a fire consumed the building, but the members say they are confident their church will go on.

Chatmon said "One round does not determine who will win the fight."

And thanks to Crawford's help, they believe their prayers have been answered. However, they would be grateful for any donations.
