WEST DES MOINES Truro native and former site planner Randy Downs has been promoted to assistant director, site planner at Hy-Vee, Inc.
Downs graduated from I-35 High School and attended Iowa State University receiving a bachelors degree in landscape and architecture in 1989. He then worked in Hy-Vees engineering department as director of landscape architecture from 1999 to 2005. After spending several years working as a landscape architect/project manager for Snyder and Associates in Ankeny, Downs rejoined Hy-Vee as a site planner and a member of the executive staff.
Randy has tirelessly worked to get our new sites approved by municipal, county and state governmental agencies. He always has our customers convenience and safety at the top of his mind when designing sites, and he works extremely hard to control site costs on new construction and remodels, said Jeff Markey, senior vice president of store development at Hy-Vee.
The promotion was announced last month at the companys annual stockholders meeting. Thirty-four employees were promoted, including nine at group vice president, four at assistant vice president and three at senior vice president.

Scott Wunderle
SAXTONS RIVER >> The owner of the landscape architecture firm tasked with designing the park slated for the center of Saxtons River now represents Vermont on the national stage.
Scott Wunderle, who owns TERRIGENOUS in Chester, began his term as president of the Vermont chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects. He recently attended the Chapter Presidents Council biannual meeting in Denver, Colo., and will do so again this spring in Washington, D.C., and next fall in Chicago.
Wunderle, who earned two bachelor's degrees from the Rhode Island School of Design and sports a background in fine art and construction, said he advocates for the profession of landscape architecture and for the design process in general.
"The most successful projects I've worked on combine design, construction management, and hand craft," he said. "I control the macro and the micro throughout the process, and rely on others to do everything in between."
Wunderle told the Reformer the membership of the Vermont chapter which boasts about 60 people voted in the fall to make him president. He said he has since helped organize a holiday party and the 2014 Doug Crowell Lecture Series that featured Seattle-based architect James Cutler who designed the house of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates as part of Burlington City Arts. Wunderle also organizes monthly meetings of the Vermont chapter of the ASLA.
He said he also is in the middle of organizing the 2014-15 Public Places Awards, which will be held at the Vermont Statehouse. Wunderle told the Reformer the awards are a biannual event to honor landscape architects and members of allied professions who have worked on any outdoor space project.
Wunderle said his tenure has been a great experience so far and he appreciates who he gets to work with.

Use Landscape Evergreen Trees and Shrubs in your yard for year round color and interest. Unlike annuals and perennials, the landscape evergreens, also know as conifers, evergreen shrubs or evergreen trees, retain their foliage or needles year round. Rhododendrons and some Azaleas are considered to be evergreen shrubs also because they retain their leaves during the winter. Landscape evergreen trees and evergreen shrubs require very little care after they are established. As with all plants extra care and attention to watering evergreen trees and shrubs in the first year of planting is essential. Evergreen trees live for mulch. Well aged bark, peat moss and or pine straw are excellent mulches for all conifers. Maine evergreen trees that produce large decorative cones: Pine cones are most well known. White Pine produces the long cylindrical cones that often will have a "sugar" coating on them. The "sugar" is tree sap somewhat hardened. Austrian Pine cones are large but more compact than white pine and very solid. Their shape is more triangular with a wide base. Muhgo and Red Pine have cones similar in look to the Austrian but theirs will be about half the size and weight. White and Black Spruce have small but still usable size cones. The real prize cones are found on the large Colorado spruces. Spruce cones are more papery feeling than Pine and lighter in color. They are similar in shape to white pine but more round at the tip and wider at the base. Evergreen cones will close up when wet. Allowed to dry most will reopen fully. Here, in Blue Hill, Maine many Rhododendrons and some Azaleas are considered tender evergreen shrubs also because they retain some of their foliage over winter. But our focus is on the hardy evergreen trees and evergreen shrubs that are so at home in the cold north.
Dwarf and miniature landscape evergreens are an excellent choice for home landscaping projects. Very little trimming is needed for miniature or dwarf evergreens. They fit into today's more compact yards easily and they can be combined in their own endless mix of color and texture. There are enough cultivars available now that person could have a bed of all dwarf blue conifers or all gold. Dwarf conifers are the ideal choice to use in a bed that will be seen from inside your home. They are also ideal to use as foundation plantings if acquired at a large enough size to be seen. While the dwarf evergreens start out very small and slow they won't usually overgrow their allotted space.
Unlike annuals or perennials, landscape evergreens will be there for you year round. Once established evergreen trees and shrubs need little maintenance. They provide shade that inhibits the growth of weeds. In spring the colorful new growth on evergreen trees and evergreen shrubs is a delight. Often a lighter shade of color the new growth lends a bi-tone effect to plants. As new growth hardens off the shrubs become one solid color again. Except for those that are actually bi-tones like the Snowtip Cedar. In Summer and Fall the dark green conifers are a lush backdrop for bright colored annuals and perennials. And what would winter be without a dusting of snow shown off on a rich green backdrop of evergreen shapes?
In our garden we have also used evergreen trees as hedges to outline the space, block the wind and road noises and provide privacy. One of the pleasant side effects of these evergreen hedges has been an increase in small song bird population in the garden.

A DEVELOPMENT of green properties has been completed in Kings Hill.
Environ Communities built the detached eco homes at Keepers Court in Kings Hill.
The new properties have followed the principles of biophilia - biophilic design incorporates fresh air, daylight and natural materials, with a view to creating a more pleasurable environment in which to live.
The benefits of biophilia include faster recovery rates for patients, decreased dependency on medication, reduced stress, and improved emotional wellness.
The five bedroom properties at Keepers Court are light with significant expanses of glass used throughout.
The large picture window in the upstairs landing and sky lights in the roof allow light to flood down on to the landing and stairs.
The landings are double height and some master bedrooms have cathedral ceilings, to continue the light and airy feel.
Natural materials are used throughout the properties, including oak wood flooring and granite Pyram kitchen worktops.
The ground floors have a seamless continuation of the indoor space outdoors.

Can smoke from fires intensify tornadoes?
Yes, say University of Iowa researchers, who examined the effects of smokeresulting from spring agricultural land-clearing fires in Central Americatransported across the Gulf of Mexico and encountering tornado conditions already in process in the United States.
The UI study, published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, examined the smoke impacts on a historic severe weather outbreak that occurred during the afternoon and evening of April 27, 2011. The weather event produced 122 tornadoes, resulted in 313 deaths across the southeastern United States, and is considered the most severe event of its kind since 1950.
The outbreak was caused mainly by environmental conditions leading to a large potential for tornado formation and conducive to supercells, a type of thunderstorm. However, smoke particles intensified these conditions, according to co-lead authors Gregory Carmichael, professor of chemical and biochemical engineering, and Pablo Saide, Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research (CGRER) postdoctoral fellow.
They say the smoke lowered the base of the clouds and increased wind shear, defined as wind speed variations with respect to altitude. Together, those two conditions increased the likelihood of more severe tornadoes. The effects of smoke on these conditions had not been previously described, and the study found a novel mechanism to explain these interactions.
These results are of great importance, as it is the first study to show smoke influence on tornado severity in a real case scenario. Also, severe weather prediction centers do not include atmospheric particles and their effects in their models, and we show that they should at least consider it, says Carmichael.
We show the smoke influence for one tornado outbreak, so in the future we will analyze smoke effects for other outbreaks on the record to see if similar impacts are found and under which conditions they occur, says Saide. We also plan to work along with model developers and institutions in charge of forecasting to move forward in the implementation, testing and incorporation of these effects on operational weather prediction models.
In order to make their findings, the researchers ran computer simulations based upon data recorded during the 2011 event. One type of simulation included smoke and its effect on solar radiation and clouds, while the other omitted smoke. In fact, the simulation including the smoke resulted in a lowered cloud base and greater wind shear.
