Middle school architects to present at school board meeting

    - February 3, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Architects will present middle school schematic designs to the Morgan County School District RE-3 Monday night, marking the end of the schematic design phase for the building.

Representatives from Wold Architects and Engineers and Larson Incitti Architects will present early in the meeting at about 7 p.m. The representatives will show schematic designs of the new middle school and present information regarding the process.

Representatives from the two firms and representatives from the Design Advisory Committee (DAG) held a community meeting on Jan. 26 giving residents a first look at the schematic designs for the middle school. Architects and DAG members spent the meeting answering questions about the decisions chosen. The schematic design presentation to the Board of Education is expected to follow a similar format to the community meeting.

The schematic design presentation to the Board of Education is important, however, because it marks the last step in the schematic design phase. Architects will move on to the design development phase, which will focus on specific elements in the new middle school. Building designers will spend this phase speaking with every stakeholder in the new building, including teachers, administrators and groups expected to use the building.

Architects will hold another public meeting on March 9.

The Board of Education has scheduled an executive session to begin at 6 p.m. Board members will discuss a superintendent evaluation, according to the agenda. Board members may invite Karen Temple into the meeting.

Action items the Board of Education will consider approving are consideration to approve an FFA officer retreat, consideration to approve an overnight trip for the baseball team, consideration to approve the acceptance of donations and consideration to approve a request for unpaid leave.

The Board of Education approved the FFA officer retreat via email Jan. 23, according to the agenda. FFA officers have already taken the trip.

If the Board of Education approves the overnight baseball trip, the team will have the go-ahead to travel to Montrose on March 12-13.

If the board approves to accept donations, the school district will receive $5,000 from Ehrlich Toyota East for the purposes of buying new mats at Fort Morgan High School. Ehrlich Toyota was also able to apply for a $5,000 match from Toyota National, according to the agenda.

New loft and retail space for downtown Quincy

    - February 3, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) - One building in downtown Quincy may be getting a makeover.

The building at 218 North 6th Street has been vacant for two years, but that's about to change.

Austin Properties plans to develop the building into a loft apartment and retail space on the lower level after it was approved for a revolving loan through the city Monday.

The company owns other buildings nearby and says it plans to bring more business to the block.

"What we're trying to do is kind of group develop a few of the buildings together, provide parking access, just sort of tie them together so they have a little bit better of a chance of success as a group," owner Bret Austin said.

Austin expects to finish construction on the loft by fall if the sale of the building goes through.

Restaurants look to expand, move into Crystal Lake

    - February 3, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

CRYSTAL LAKE A new restaurant is moving to Crystal Lake, and another Crystal Lake classic is opening a new space devoted to retail and carryout.

The Nancy's Pizza location in Lake in the Hills will be moving to a slightly larger space at 1295 Randall Road, between Ackman Road and McHenry Avenue, sometime this spring, said Bill Gluck, the restaurant's owner.

That is dependent on whether there are additional delays, he said, but hes hoping to start construction within the next month. The work will take about eight weeks, he said.

The storefront is already built but hasnt been occupied yet, Planning and Economic Development Manager James Richter said. Gluck will have to remodel the inside and turn it into a restaurant.

The restaurant will be one of 27 franchise locations in the Chicago metropolitan area. Like other Nancys Pizza spots, the 1,700-square-foot restaurant will offer its signature stuffed pizza.

Another business a scaled-down, carryout version of Benedicts La Strata with a front retail section stocked with unusual food items and gift items is set to open around the third week of February, said its owner, John Pilafas, who also owns Benedicts Eggs & More in East Dundee.

The whole retail part is new to me, so Im leaving it up to my wife, said Pilafas, who hopes to squeeze in a bit of vacation before opening the newest location.

A Taste of Benedicts will offer a variety of coffee and pastries in the morning and some of its popular lunch items, including salads and sandwiches, later in the day, he said. The food will all be prepared and packaged at Benedicts La Strata, which is across the street from the new store at 39 N. Williams St.

The goal is for A Taste of Benedicts to take some of the pressure off the lunchtime carryout rush at La Strata, he said.

The location previously was the resale shop Fionas Finds and J. Scott Menswear before that.

    Nursing Homes Fear Future Cutbacks

    - February 3, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

North Haverhill Upper Valley nursing home administrators said they are wary of Gov. Maggie Hassans decision to pull back $7 million designated for New Hampshire nursing homes as part of a plan to balance the budget, because they fear the cut may herald further funding reductions in the future.

If this proposal succeeds, they said, whats to stop it from happening again in the future.

If the governor can go ahead and take this money, going against the legislature, whats to stop her or the commissioner (for the Department of Health and Human Services) down the road to say we need another $10 million? said Craig Labore, administrator of the Grafton County Nursing Home in North Haverhill.

The plan to reallocate the $7 million is part of a proposal to address a $58 million shortfall in the Health and Human Services budget.

William Hinkle, a spokesman for Hassan, said budget change is not a reduction in reimbursement rates; rather, the move would mean forgoing a planned increase in the Medicaid rate of reimbursement to the nursing homes.

While the nursing home rate increase might be worthwhile, it would be hard to justify cutting other critical health services in order to pay for a rate increase , Hinkle wrote in an email.

Hinkle said the executive branch was forced to make reductions to comply with budget cuts initiated by the legislature.

Those unspecified reductions mean that the Executive Branch has to cut funding for services that the legislature approved, Hinkle wrote. We have to make difficult but necessary choices to ensure a balanced budget.

State Sen. Jeanie Forrester, R-Meredith, chairwoman of the Senate Finance Committee, said she opposes using the nursing home reimbursement rate to help paper over the departments budget shortfall.

Its just very, very frustrating, she said. (We) made a promise to the nursing homes. They planned their budgets around it.
