SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) New York-traded oil ended Friday at its lowest level since March 2009, amassing losses of more than 7% on the week.
Crude-oil futures were mixed, with London-traded Brent settling higher. Investors parsed news of the death of Saudi Arabias King Abdullah and marginal improvement in Chinas manufacturing data.
Light, sweet crude futures for March delivery CLH5, -2.20% retreated 72 cents, or 1.6%, to settle at $45.59 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. That was the lowest finish since March 11, 2009.
Prices had traded as high as $47.76 a barrel earlier. On the week, New York-traded oil lost 7.2%, down for 15 of the past 17 weeks.
Brent crude for March delivery on Londons ICE Futures exchange LCOH5, +0.06% rose 27 cents, or 0.6%, to $48.79 a barrel. Brent traded as high as $49.80 a barrel. On the week, the commodity declined 2.8%.
The change of guard in Saudi Arabia, the worlds No. 1 oil exporter, is unlikely to change kingdoms stance in oil markets. The new king has kept oil minister Ali Al-Naimi in power, and Saudi Arabia will continue to pursue the strategy of defending its own market share rather than help support oil prices, said Matt Smith, an analyst with Schneider Electric.
Saudi Arabias King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al Saud died at the age of around 90, according to a royal court statement early Friday morning. The statement also said that Abdullahs half-brother, Crown Prince Salman, who is 79 years old, was declared king and Prince Muqrin, 69, became crown prince.
See: Death of king unlikely to alter Saudi oil policy
Earlier Friday, Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, a Saudi businessman and a nephew of King Abdullah, said on CNBC the world would never again see oil at $100 a barrel, reiterating remarks he had made earlier this month.
The price of oil will remain under pressure for the foreseeable future, he said.

Scientists have been surprised to find water pooling beneath the ice
In a serendipitous discovery, a team of scientists has found a lake at the bottom of the ice where the relatively warm meltwater pools and makes the ice around it slushier. Ultimately, that could make the ice flow faster to the ocean. Credit: NASA/USGS
On a clear day, anyone flying over Greenland on the route between North America and Europe can look down and see the bright bluepatches of melted wateratop the flat, blindingly white expanse ofthe ice sheetthat covers the island, the second largest chunk of ice on Earth.
Scientists have long known this meltwater flows in streams along the ice sheets surface before disappearing down chutes that take it tumbling to the bottom of the ice sheet, where the ice scrapes against bedrock.
It was thought that the water quickly flowed between ice and rock and out to sea, with little impact on the bottom ice layers. But a new study suggests the story isnt so simple. In a serendipitous discovery, a team of scientists has found a lake at the bottom of the ice where the relatively warm meltwater pools and makes the ice around it slushier. Ultimately, that could make the ice flow faster to the ocean.
The finding, detailed in theJan. 22 issue of the journal Nature, suggests that this process could be important to more accurately modeling how Greenland will respond to climate change and contribute to the already 8 inches ofglobal sea level risesince 1900. Greenland holds enough ice to raise global sea levels by 24 feet, and how much and how quickly it melts could change projections offuture sea level rise, which theIntergovernmental Panel on Climate Changeputs between 10 and 32 inches by 2100, including contributions from Greenlands glaciers.
What the heck is that? As happens so often in science,Mike Williswasnt actually looking for what he ended up discovering. The glaciologist was combing through satellite and GPS data to see what small, local effects could be clouding satellite measurements of larger changes in Earths gravity from ice loss.
What he did not expect to find was a hole twice the size of Central Park in a small ice cap in the northern reaches of Greenland.
What the heck is that? he thought when he saw it.
He didnt think he could possibly be the first person to have spotted it. Surely someones noticed a gigantic hole in northern Greenland before, he said, but there were no records of it.

A newly released public record illustrates the circumstances leading up to former McCutcheon High School teacher Jakob Robinson's arrest.
Robinson, who was fired by the Tippecanoe School Corp. board on Thursday, faces five charges of child seduction, felonies punishable by one to six years each.
The letter, released to the Journal & Courier following a public record request, is a Jan. 14 letter from Principal John Beeker to Robinson in which Beeker lays out the facts leading up to his recommendation that the board immediately terminate Robinson's teaching contract.
The letter alleges that Robinson actively misled McCutcheon officials on the nature of his relationship with the student and that he attempted to have TSC's technology department re-image his computer to destroy evidence.
In December, shortly before winter break, a patron saw Robinson and the student in public and notified school administrators that Robinson's "relationship with the student appeared to exceed a normal student-teacher relationship."

Then, on Dec. 18, the Thursday before winter break, two administrators watching the school's surveillance cameras witnessed Robinson and the student leave the school at lunch time.

Video of a deputy's testimony is shedding light on the murder of an Allegan County woman, as police continue to search for her husband hundreds of miles away.(Photo: Video of a deputy's testimony is shedding light on the murder of an Allegan County woman, as police continue to search for her husband hundreds of miles away.)
ALLEGAN, Mich. (WZZM) -- Video of a deputy's testimony is shedding light on the murder of an Allegan County woman, as police continue to search for her husband hundreds of miles away. Harold Knight, who is the main suspect in his wife's murder, was last seen in Maine, but investigators say they're not sure if he's still there. WZZM 13 obtained a copy of a video that shows the probable cause hearing in the case, in which a deputy lays out the evidence to a judge.
"Allegan County Central Dispatch received a phone call from an unidentified male," the deputy told the judge.
The caller left no name, just directions to the murder scene, according to the video testimony from a probable cause hearing.
"(He) advised dispatch on a taped line that they did harm to this person and that they were leaving the country," the deputy said.
The call led deputies to a Ganges Township home, where they found the body of Sarah Knight. Investigators later determined the caller was her husband, Harold Knight.
"I did speak with Harold Knight's son who stated that the voice on the recording who made the phone call was his father, Harold Wesley Knight, was now missing," the deputy told the judge.
Investigators say Harold Knight was spotted in Maine last week.
"The family actually lived in Maine for a period of time so that may be the reason," says Captain Frank Baker with the Allegan County Sheriff's Department. "Right now, we are working with federal and state law enforcement and local law enforcement officials to try to determine if he's left that area."

Since the advent of the sewer pipe, there has been need for the sewer cleaning equipment. Contrary to popular myth, the sanitary system is not self-sustaining. Sewage flows gradually slow over time, and, eventually, blockages begin to build up in the piping. If steps are not taken to clear these blockages, the entire pipe can fail exposing the surrounding population to unhealthy or even dangerous gasses and materials. It is the sewer cleaner's job to clear these blockages and ensure that their municipality remains sanitary.
With time, sewage structures have become more and more complex. Consequently, we now require increasingly powerful machines in order to keep them all running properly. The modern sewer system includes laterals, mains, manholes, catch basins, lift stations, and water treatment facilities all of which are critical to keeping the sewage system working.
The combination sewer cleaner is the pinnacle of sewer cleaning equipment. Utilizing a highly advanced combination of, controlled, high-pressured water and a vacuum capable of generating suctions strong enough to move 3500 cubic feet of material per minute (3500 CFM). By redirecting the flow of the water with carefully designed nozzles, the septic truck can force all the collected sludge down the pipe to a catch basin or lift station where he can then vacuum it all up into the debris body to be disposed of at a water treatment facility. The Combination Sewer Cleaner was the first equipment line that Doheny Companies carried; a lot has changed since then but, to this day, Combination Sewer Cleaners form one of the backbones of the company. From the beginning, we have been the most trusted name in septic pump trucks and sewer cleaning equipment. For over 50 years, Jack Doheny Companies has provided the market with high quality service and support, and we continue to be Vactor's leading dealer of sewer cleaning equipment and parts.
