Protect one of the largest parts of your home -- the roof -- with regular cleaning and inspection. This should be done at least twice a year, in fall to get your roof in shape for the coldweather and again in spring to see how it has held up to winter's hardships. More frequent checkups may be necessary after windstorms or heavy snowfalls. Read the terms of your homeowner's insurance policy and your roofing warranty carefully to see what roof maintenance is required. For the best care, set up a professional maintenance plan through your roofing contractor.
Roof Safety Tips
If you are planning to clean your roof yourself, start working from the top downward. Utilize a sturdy ladder and work with a buddy, or at least let someone know that you are cleaning from atop the ladder. Protect your hands with work gloves and your eyes with goggles. Avoid walking on the roof surface where possible; however, if you must do so, make sure you are wearing rubber-soled shoes. Watch out for power lines and stay off the roof during a rainfall to minimize the risk of electric shock.
On Top of Your Roof
What to look out for:
The Roofing Material Itself
Check for loose, cracked, curled, blistered, or missing shingles, which will need to be repaired or replaced.
Look for rot or insect infestation in the wood.
Inspect the flashing in the area of the chimney, vents, and exhaust pipes. Be on the alert for bends, holes, or dry, loose caulk.

Winter is for the birdsso feed them.
Thats the advice of Curtis Stillwell at the Grass Pad, a nursery stock, seed, sod and wild bird enthusiast store in Olathe, Kansas.
Just get off your butt and do it, he jokes. Its not rocket science. You can buy a small hanging feeder and a 10 pound bag of wild birdseed for less than $10. Start small and sees who shows up.
And who might show up?
According to Stillwell, during the winter in northeast Kansas, blue jays, cardinals, house sparrows, song sparrows, mourning doves, house finches, house wrens, purple finches, American finches, tufted titmouses, chickadees, hairy and downy woodpeckers, red bellied woodpeckers, red wing black birds, grackles, nuthatches and flickers may pay a visit.
However, whether humans should feed wild birds, according to Stillwell, is a personal choice, akin, he says, to helping a homeless person on the street. Melody Weller at the Wild Bird House at the Brookwood Shopping Center in Topeka agrees, but adds that feeding birds doesnt make them dependent.
The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks apparently thinks its OK to feed feathered friends, as it provides information on feeding and attracting birds at kdwpt.state.ks.us/Services/Wildlife-Diversity/Bird-Feeders.
KDWP says birds have three simple needs: food, cover and water.
And for humans, Weller adds, a good viewing area from a window, with the feeder or birdhouse placed where predators cant harm the birds.
For cover as well as food that means habitat. The KDWP and Kansas State and Extension Forestry recommend a song bird bundle of shrubs, such as tartarian honeysuckle, eastern red cedar, Nanking cherry and aromatic sumac. They also suggest a woodpile or an old Christmas tree.

The city of Urbana will receive more than $20,000 in state funding to make upgrades to Melvin Miller Park.
The grant is part of $2.8 million in NatureWorks grants approved by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to assist communities across Ohio develop and improve public access to outdoor recreation facilities.
Urbana officials will receive about $20,400 to replace fences around adult softball fields No. 1 and No. 2 at Melvin Miller Park, which were opened in the 1960s and early 1970s, said Parks and Recreation Superintendent Chris Stokes.
Theres holes in them, the poles are leaning and everything is curled up on the bottom. Theyre in bad shape, Stokes said.
NatureWorks will provide 75 percent of the money for the project. Urbana will pay the remaining 25 percent, or nearly $7,000, which will come out of the Capital Improvement Fund, Stokes said.
These grants will allow communities to increase green space, update playground equipment and picnic areas and spend time with their families, which helps improve the quality of life for everyone that calls our great state home, said ODNR Director James Zehringer in a press release.
Urbanas Melvin Miller Park is one of 80 community-based projects that will receive NatureWorks grant money.
The grants will support the acquisition of more than 23 acres of green space, the development or improvement of 21 playgrounds, 12 shelters and gazebos, seven park restrooms, two spray-splash pads, a skate park and dozens of other local improvement projects that will help make Ohios park infrastructure more enjoyable for all Ohioans, according to ODNR.
Stokes said officials hope to replace the fences in the spring.
Theyre quite old and in disrepair and overdue for having them replaced, Stokes said.

IT'S that time of year when the feng shui conscious among us are busy studying directions and flying stars.
This year, as I busy myself with said directions and stars, I am reminded of this shop that used to be on Session Road, called Old Pagoda. I recall that it was either where KFC is now or a bit lower on that incline. At any rate, it was owned and run by this exotic Chinese woman whose hairdo consisted of not one bun, not two, but three or four at any given sighting. What a character.
A tingaling accompanied entering the Old Pagoda door, and the shop was full of Chinese antiques and bricabrac. A musty smell accompanied any looking and shopping. And that exotic woman smiled as the tingaling announced you, either entering or leaving. Im now thinking that had I been feng shui conscious then, I would have gone to Old Pagoda for my flying stars needs.
In the here and now, this incoming Year of the Sheep has the dangerous flying stars in the west, center, southeast, and south. The number 5 bad earth star is in the west and requires a metal cure. The west is also where the three killings are, and requires three celestial guardians to be parked there: fu dog, chi lin, and pi yao. The number 3 flying star is center, bringing conflict, and said star is cured by any number of feng shui items, my most often used being fu dogs. The southeast is where the number 2 Illness star is, and can be subdued by a wu lou. The number 7 robbery star is south, and is cured by, again, any number of items. My most often used is the blue rhino and elephant tandem.
As for the lucky stars, they can be enhanced.
