Jacqueline Kennedy's notes to designers up for auction

    - January 15, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.

In private, even the stylish former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis admitted to tiring of the all-black attire long considered chic in New York City.

"I just love this suit & will wear it everywhere as I am SO sick of everyone constantly in black like Mediterranean villages where everyone is in mourning for 20 years," she once wrote to Bill Hamilton, then the design director at Carolina Herrera.

The handwritten note accompanied by her own sketch of a suit with a single-breasted jacket is among a few dozen pieces of Onassis' personal correspondence making a rare appearance at auction Saturday in Florida.

The notes about clothes and furniture she was buying show the human side of the widow of President John Kennedy and tycoon Aristotle Onassis, said Rico Baca, auctioneer and co-owner of Palm Beach Modern Auctions.

"In these notes you get a sense of how someone famous can make the average person comfortable," said Baca, who is preparing the personal correspondence for auction Saturday. "She really did go out of her way to make people feel appreciated."

Mostly written on her signature blue stationery, all the notes end with the former first lady giving thanks for the work Hamilton and interior designer Richard Keith Langham did for her from the mid-1980s until her death in 1994.

Some notes offer Onassis' polite yet firm opinions on shoulder pads, the shape of a jacket, slim pant legs and the weight of chairs.

Hamilton remembers how Onassis would arrive for fittings with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich wrapped in aluminum foil in her handbag, ready to work through lunch to get the details right.

"To get the point across she would do drawings of ideas she wanted, from a canopy bed to a jacket. We spent a lot of time selecting fabrics," Hamilton said.

Home Electrical Safety for When Winter Weather Hits

    - January 15, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

WACO, Texas (PRWEB) January 13, 2015

Severe winter weather can cause a lot of problems for homeowners. Aside from clearing the snow from roofs, driveways and vehicles, homeowners should make sure the rest of their home and property are protected when winter weather arrives. Mr. Electric has important winter electrical maintenance tips every homeowner should know.

Lights Light fixtures should only have the correct bulb with the proper wattage. This prolongs the life of both fixtures and bulbs as well as prevents fire. Outdoor fixtures should be inspected for rust and frayed wiring.

Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors should be tested monthly for reliability and the batteries should be replaced annually. Check the expiration dates. Smoke detectors should be replaced every 10 years. When replacing carbon monoxide detectors, it is important to check the expiration date because older model detectors typically have a life span of two years. Newer models typically require replacement every five to six years.

Outdoor electrical outlets Severe weather can have an effect on homes. Before and after a winter storm, be sure to check outdoor outlets, cords, and extensions for damage. Any outdoor fixtures showing frayed wires should be replaced.

Backup generators Home generators should have routine generator maintenance. Keep the area around the generator clean, change oil as recommended by the manufacturer, and routinely check electrical wires, buttons, bolts, connections, elements, and the ground for functionality and safety. An annual professional maintenance and calibration is recommended.

Electrical Panel Maintenance Older electrical panels should be inspected by a service professional. Older electrical panels can have multiple issues including improper wiring and over sized or undersized breakers. If updated appliances have been added to an older home, the electrical wiring and panel should be inspected by a certified electrician.

Faulty Wiring Blamed For Fire That Killed Mother And Toddler

    - January 15, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) Investigators say faulty electrical wiring in the attic of a duplex is to blame for a fire that left a mother and her 2-year-old son dead.

It happened about 10:00 a.m. Wednesday on Rosecrest near Third Street in southwest Memphis. The child's father escaped the burning home. Both he and his brother were taken to the hospital. They, along with neighbors, had tried to rescue the mother and child who were trapped inside.

The mother had just given birth to a second child a few days ago. That baby is still in the hospital. This is hitting neighbors extremely hard. They tried to rush inside the burning home to save the mother and toddler, but the fire was just too intense.

"The house was engulfed in flames. There was a man who came through the back of the house in his underwear. He was like, 'there's babies in here, there's babies,'" witness Johnna Brown said.

Brown and her husband tried to help.

"There was no going into the house. It was too far gone," Brown said.

"It was like an explosion. There was fire everywhere," neighbor Robert Marshall said. Marshall lives next door and came running when he heard screaming.

"He said, 'man, my baby and wife is inside.' I said to get em. He said 'I can't,' so I ran back to my house and grabbed a towel and soaked it with water and I ran back over. I wasn't six steps inside and I couldn't see," Marshall said.

The man's 19-year-old brother ran inside after Marshall, but was overcome by the fire. He is hospitalized with bad burns to his face and hands.

"It was way too late. He almost died," Marshall said.

Theresa May: we must deny terrorists safe spaces to communicate

    - January 15, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Theresa May criticises her coalition colleagues for blocking the communications data bill in 2012

Theresa May has said there must be no safe spaces for terrorist communications as she indicated that the Conservative manifesto will contain proposals to prevent encryption of internet communications.

The home secretary mounted another fierce attack on her coalition colleagues for blocking the communications data bill in 2012, saying: With every day that passes without the capabilities in the proposed bill, the powers of the security services diminish. She said this meant crimes will go unpunished and innocent lives put at risk.

May told the Commons it was likely that the counter-terrorist investigation in Paris following the massacre at Charlie Hebdo involved the use of communications data to locate the suspects.

She said it was necessary to allow the police and the security services, under a tightly controlled regime, to find out the who, where, when and how of a communication, but not its content.

May said she was waiting for a review of communications surveillance being undertaken by the independent reviewer David Anderson, as well as a report from parliaments intelligence and security committee.

She was scathing when asked by Julian Huppert, the Liberal Democrat MP, whether she was happy to join a small number of dictatorships in banning encryption. Huppert said total access to internet messages for the security services would cause huge problems for anyone that relies on secure online transaction for banking and online shopping, jeopardising Britains reputation as a safe a place to do business.

May replied: We are determined as far as possible that there are no safe spaces for terrorists to communicate. I would have thought that this is a principle that could be held by everyone in the Commons So far as I am concerned and the Conservative party is concerned, our manifesto will make clear that we will introduce legislation needed to restore our declining capabilities and that we will use all the legal powers available to us to make sure that, where appropriate, the intelligence and security agencies have the maximum capability to intercept the communications of suspects while making sure that such intrusive techniques are properly overseen.

The shadow home secretary, Yvette Cooper, pointed out that May had not come to her seeking fresh powers, and she warned against a caricatured argument between liberty on the one hand and security on the other.

The former Labour foreign secretary Jack Straw said the differences between the Conservatives and Labour on surveillance of communications were not large.
