The Better Business Bureau is warning consumers about an East Texas area carpet cleaning contractor whom they say took their money without completing the work. Several Tyler and Longview area consumers are reporting Steam Tech did not provide services they were paid to perform.
Responding to roadside sign advertisements for carpet cleaning ranging between $12.95 and $20 per room, customers allege the contractor comes in, sprays water on the floor to let it soak, asks to be paid in cash, and leaves the premises without completing the job.
Another consumer told the BBB she went to look at the room, and by the time she realized he hadnt done anything, he was gone.
I gave him $210, said one customer, and he said he was going to write up an invoice. Next thing I know, I hear his motor running; he just took the money and ran.
Customers describe the vehicle as an unmarked older model white Chevrolet half-ton pickup truck with carpet equipment and a blue barrel in the back. The worker reportedly claims his name is Michael, David, or John; however, based on customer descriptions, the BBB believes this is most likely one individual. Consumers describe the man as a Caucasian male, between 5-foot-9 and 5-foot-10 with a medium build, with short, dirty blond hair, and a goatee.
In the State of Texas, there are no licensing requirements for carpet cleaners, said Mechele Agbayani Mills, president of Better Business Bureau Serving Central East Texas. Thats why its so important for consumers to verify companies with the BBB before hiring them to come into your home.
Consumers report they have attempted to contact the company phone number, but the company has been unresponsive. BBB investigators have also attempted to contact the company, but have not yet received a response. Reports have been filed with the Tyler Police Department.
The BBB offers the following advice for consumers dealing with carpet cleaners or other contractors: Watch out for contractors in unmarked trucks or for companies requiring advance payment or payment in all cash; dont succumb to high-pressure techniques, such as notices that the price is good for one day only; try to verify the businesss true identity; and get a business card and a physical location of the company as it is always better to deal with well-established businesses with a good record.

Beaumont, Texas From Entergy Texas -- Old Man Winter is on the move with Southeast Texas expecting its coldest temperatures of the season before the week ends. It may be tempting to crank up the thermostat to compensate, but doing so can mean significant increases to your energy bill.
When the thermostat is turned up, energy use increases and bills rise, too, said Vernon Pierce, Entergy Texas vice president of customer service. Heating and air conditioning make up more than half of most energy bills. The best way to manage your electric usage during cold weather is to keep your thermostat set on 68 degrees. Each degree warmer will increase your bill by about three percent.
Other ways to stay comfortable and save energy when temperatures drop include:
*Conserve hot water. Heating water for cooking, cleaning, laundry and bathing is the second-largest energy user in homes. Insulating blankets for electric water heaters are inexpensive and readily available at home improvement stores. Also, set your water heater thermostat to 120 degrees or medium.
*Seal air leaks and duct work. In the South, leaky ducts waste more energy than any other single item. To stop the loss, duct work should be made airtight everywhere ducts attach to vents, each other and the heating/cooling unit. Use mastic as the preferred choice to seal these locations or foil tape. Some do-it-yourselfers can handle this job. Others may want to hire a professional.
*Think long term. Making your home more energy efficient is a good move for lowering bills all year round. Start with Entergy Texas Entergy Solutions program. A wealth of information, tips and even DIY videos are available to help homeowners improve their homes energy efficiency.
Entergy Texas provides electric service to more than 426,000 customers in 27 counties. It is a subsidiary of Entergy Corporation. Entergy is an integrated energy company engaged primarily in electric power production and retail distribution operations. Entergy owns and operates power plants with 30,000 megawatts of electric generating capacity, including nearly approximately 10,000 megawatts of nuclear power, making it one of the nations leading nuclear generators.
Entergy delivers electricity to 2.8 million utility customers in Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi and Texas.

Oella Avenue will close for two weeks beginning Monday, Jan. 12 for the repair of a retaining wall at Pleasant Hill Road in the Oella community of Catonsville, Baltimore County said in a press release issued Tuesday.
A failure in a 12-foot section of the stone wall was found in August and repairs were planned for early this year, the release said.
According to the county, the Oella wall was constructed in the 1980s and is over 200 feet long and 7 feet high at its tallest point.
Repairs to be completed by the county Department of Public Works will cost approximately $25,000 and the original stone will be used, the county said.
Traffic will be detoured to Westchester Avenue and Hollow Road during construction, the county said.

London: Seen from some angles, tilting at a crazy angle in shallow water, it might almost resemble a huge plaything discarded by capricious giants.
Since the weekend, a 57,000-ton, 590-foot car transporter, the Hoegh Osaka, has been aground on Bramble Bank, a well-marked sandbank off the British port of Southampton, beached deliberately by its crew to prevent the vessel from capsizing after it began to list on Saturday.
The crew was then plucked to safety by rescue ships and a helicopter, the British maritime authorities said.
The sight of the leviathan lying low has drawn crowds on the shoreline and in small boats, as well as speculation as much about the vessel as about its cargo: heavy construction equipment and 1,400 cars, mostly high-end, bound for Germany.
Its fate offered a counterpoint to that of another ship that encountered trouble in British waters over the weekend, the Cyprus-registered Cemfjord, a 272-foot bulk-cement carrier that capsized and sank during a violent storm off northern Scotland.
Rescuers said Monday that they were no longer searching for the Cemfjord's eight-person crew. The cause of the sinking was not known, the ship's operators said.
How the Singapore-registered Hoegh Osaka came to its current resting place, by contrast, was a tale of maritime resourcefulness in the face of looming disaster, at least as described by Ingar Skiaker, the chief executive of the ship's owner, Hoegh Autoliners.
"Our vessel developed a severe list shortly after she left port, and the pilot and the master took the decision to save the vessel and its crew by grounding her on the bank," Skiaker told reporters. "This showed great skill and seamanship on behalf of our crew when faced with such challenging circumstances."
"Right now we have serious work ahead of us in order to free the vessel from the Bramble Bank without disrupting the flow of traffic in and out of the port of Southampton," he said Sunday.
By Monday, the ship was said to be canted at an angle of more than 50 degrees. Of the cars in its hold, around 1,200 were made by Jaguar Land Rover, which manufactures sport utility vehicles and sports cars, the company said.
