Jangmi in the region could see waves reach 4.5 metres in the waters off Sabah, Sarawak.
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah, which is surrounded by three seas viz. South China Sea, Sulu Sea and Sulawesi Sea, will be spared tropical storm Jangmi which had been expected to lash the east coast at 55 kph, down from its 74 kph earlier strength.
North Borneos good feng shui has come to its rescue.
The storm, as expected, has changed course from the direction of the Land below the Wind, and will be a spent force some 300 km north east of Sandakan on New Years Day. It weakened considerably to 46 kph after crossing the Sulu Sea.
The Meteorological Department said in a statement that the advent of Jangmi in the region could see waves reach 4.5 metres in the waters off Sandakan, Kudat, West Coast, Labuan, Miri and Bintulu, the last two being in Sarawak.
This is expected to pose a danger to all shipping and coastal activities including fishing and ferry services.
Heavy rains and strong winds are expected to start tonight until tomorrow, the Meteorological Department said in the media update. We have issued heavy rain warning for all districts in Sabah except for Tawau. The same warning applies to all districts in Sarawak except for Kapit.

MANILA, Philippines - Feng shui expert Hanz Cua gave his predictions for celebrities and politicians for 2015.
Cua has a positive prediction for Binibining Pilipinas MJ Lastimosa when she competes in the Miss Universe pageant in January.
"Nakikita ko sa chart niya malaki possibility na manalo siya. Advise ko lang wear red color sa kanyang damit," he said.
Since 2015 is the Year of the Sheep, Cua said women's energy is stronger, while men are more prone to temptation.
"Maraming mga father figure ang magkakaron ng sex scandals, issues related to third party involvement, mistresses," he said.
He noted that celebrity couple Maja Salvador and Gerald Anderson should look out for love triangle issues.
"Third party involvement pagdating kay Gerald... Pag di nila maayos baka mawala si Gerald kay Maja," he said.
Cua also has a warning for another star couple, Sarah Geronimo and Matteo Guidicelli.

MADRID Spain says 800 African migrants have tried to storm the border fences separating Spain's North African enclave of Melilla from Morocco in the second such attempt in two days.
The Interior Ministry said police repelled most but 54 migrants managed to make it across Wednesday. Spanish National Television showed the migrants celebrating the feat.
The ministry said two police officers were treated for unspecified injuries during the melee.
Thousands of African migrants living illegally in Morocco try to enter the Spanish enclaves of Melilla and Ceuta each year, hoping to reach a better life in Europe.
On Tuesday, 200 migrants stormed the six-meter (20-foot) high fences, with 102 getting across.

Cheltenham. Click here to bet.
Part-owner Barry Fulton is "fairly confident" Ptit Zig can extend his unbeaten record over fences to four in a fascinating renewal of the BetBright Novices' Chase at Cheltenham on New Year's Day.
The Listener (2006), My Way De Solzen (2007) and last year's victor Oscar Whisky are among the big names to have clinched the Grade Two prize, better known as the Dipper Novices' Chase, in recent years.
The Paul Nicholls-trained Ptit Zig was a high-class hurdler, but looks set to scale even greater heights over fences judged on his three triumphs so far, turning in a particularly impressive display when slamming Josses Hill at Ascot a fortnight ago.
Fulton said: "He's in good form and I think we're going there looking forward to it and fairly confident.
"He's done nothing wrong over fences so far. This will be his fourth run of the season and I think he'll probably have a break after this, as most of Paul's horses do in January.
"I think it's a good idea to go to Cheltenham with him ahead of the big meeting in March and hopefully everything will go well."
Ptit Zig stars in a seven-strong field, with Champagne West looking to make it three from three over fences at Prestbury Park for Philip Hobbs.
With stable jockey Richard Johnson still sidelined due to suspension, Tom O'Brien gets back on board for the first time since winning on the six-year-old at Wincanton last Christmas.
O'Brien said: "It's a proper race, but we're looking forward to it.

The NBA's all-time scoring mark is well within his grasp.
LeBron Jamesturns 30 years old today. Every birthdayis a time for reflection, but when the digit in the ten's place changes, it's more significant.
James has accomplished quite a bit in his 11-plus seasons in the NBA: five trips to The Finals, two championships, three Olympic medals, four MVP awards, two Finals MVP awards and 37 triple-doubles.
His 23,901 career points are more than any other player in NBA history has scored by the age of 30. It's enough to alreadyput him among the top 25 scorers of all time.
Some notes on the list above ...
Moses Malone (18,479) and Julius Erving (18,374) would rank eighth and ninth if we counted their points scored in the ABA.
IfKevin Durantreturns from his current injury in the next couple of weeks and stays relatively healthy through the next 3 seasons, he could rank second on the list (at somewhere between 22,500 and 23,000 points) when he turns 30 in September of 2018.
Only14 of the league's 59 MVP awardshave been won by players who had already reached their 30th birthday.Steve Nash(who turned 31 during the 2004-05 season and 32 in '05-06) is the only 30-plus guy to win the award in the last 15 years.
Of the 64 times a player has scored at least 60 points in a game (like James did this past March), only five have come after that player's 30th birthday. Only twice in the last 45 years (since the days of Wilt Chamberlain) has a 30-plus player scored 60-plus: 30-year-old Tom Chambers in 1990 and 30-year-oldKobe Bryantin 2009.
