Dozens of ethnic minority Tompuon villagers protested yesterday against the destruction of an area in Ratanakkiri provinces Lumphat Wildlife Sanctuary that is used as a community forest.
Community representative Tuy Nheb, one of more than 30 villagers demonstrating outside of Seda commune hall on behalf of 215 affected families, said that a company owned by Okhna Roth Sakhorn has been clearing hundreds of hectares of vital community forestland since August.
That area is a jungle, and we have filed a letter to the provincial authorities over the last two weeks asking for it to be registered as a communal forest, but the company has cleared about 200 hectares already, he said. We demand for a halt [to its destruction], and for discussion.
The villagers ended their four-hour protest yesterday after the company, which shares its owners name, agreed to suspend its activities for one week.
Nou Ther, deputy governor of Lumphat district, said that the area fell within an economic land concession awarded to the company.
The villagers disagree because they do not understand ... The company has rights and the logging was done legally and it was inspected by the forest officers as well, Ther said.
But Chhay Thy, Ratanakkiri provincial coordinator for local rights group Adhoc, said the company was at risk of violating a government order that reduced its ELC from 9,000 hectares to 600.

Simply put, an interior designer designs interiors! This involves planning and executing all aspects of the interior environment, including furnishing and decorating the space in commercial, institutional, and domestic settings.
There is nothing new about interior design. We have been organising our living space for functional, social, and aesthetic reasons for tens of thousands of years. By the 18th century, Europe was home to many well-established interior designers and by the 1950s, Britain was sufficiently concerned with contemporary architecture and interiors to have created The Design Council.
These early designers were mainly concerned with domestic interiors, and residential projects are still the mainstay of most small design agencies and freelance designers. However, interior design goes far beyond the residential. After all, yachts, hospitals, factories, and aeroplanes need interiors too.
In 2008, an industry survey conducted by British Design Innovation estimated that there were around 4000 UK businesses offering design consultancy services, employing some 65000 people. 23% of these firms (just under 1000) were involved in interior design. Most of them are small businesses, employing 5 people or less. Britain's desire for design has seen industry turnover rise substantially in recent decades, to reach 4.4bn by 2008.
Broadly speaking, an interior designer will work in one of the following environments:
Many interior designers are self-employed, charging between 30 and 50 per hour for their services. This figure can rise to more than 100 per hour for in-demand designers. Newly qualified designers will find it hard to make a living in this way, as reputation and experience take time to build up.
Junior designers employed by an agency can expect a starting salary of 15,000 to 20,000 a year. The national average salary for a designer with three years of experience was just under 23,000 in 2008. With five to ten years of experience, a designer's salary will probably be in the region of 25,000 to 30,000. Designers with over ten years of experience earned 32,000 on average in 2008 but these individuals could earn up to and over 50,000. These figures are based on the calculations of the Hays Consultant 2008 Salary & Benefits Guide.
In interior design, tasks and responsibilities vary according to the sector and the size of the design agency or company for which an individual works. However, the following would normally fall within the remit of an interior designer:
A professional qualification is virtually essential in order to pursue a career in interior design. There is a wide range of courses and training options available and the most suitable route will also depend upon which sector of interior design you are interested in.
The British Interior Design Association provides a list of higher education establishments offering interior design courses. There are around 60 providers offering in excess of 50 different courses. There's a huge variety from a 10 Week Interior Decoration Certificate to a 4 year full time BA Honours degree. So how should you go about choosing the right interior design course?

The home ministry has directed security agencies to remain vigilant as the date for promulgating the new constitution approaches.
In a meeting with regional administrators, security chiefs and chief district officers on Sunday, the ministry asked officials to beef up security in areas under their watch.
Five regional administrators, 12 chief district officers from mid-Tarai and CDOs form Rupandehi, Banke, Kathmandu , Lalitpur and Bhaktapur attended the meeting headed by deputy prime minister and home minister Bam Dev Gautam.
The CDOs briefed the security situation in the districts bordering India and possible infiltration of criminal elements from the other side of the border.
Home ministry spokesperson Laxmi Dhakal said they are preparing security plans to tackle an untoward situation before and after January 22.
Minister Gautam sought ideas on how to curb the activities of the Netra Bikram Chand-led CPN maoist that has threatened to stage a revolt.

NEW DELHI:Security has been tightened in India after a bomb blast killed one woman in the southern city of Bengaluru.
India's home ministry has called the incident "an act of terror". But so far, no militant group has claimed the responsibility for the blast on Sunday (Dec 28).
The explosion killed a woman, 38-year-old Bhavani Devi, and injured three others in Bengaluru. Preliminary reports suggested that the improvised explosive device, which was triggered with a timer, was placed outside a popular restaurant in the heart of the city.
Junior Home Minister Kiren Rijiju said: "Definitely, it's a terror attack. We have to upgrade the security apparatus. We have to increase the level of alertness."
Known as the IT hub of India, Bengaluru had been on a high alert since the arrest of a youth last month for allegedly running a pro-Islami State twitter account. The account sent out an array of information about the group's activities.
Over the past six years, the city formerly known as Bangalore has been hit by several blasts, the worst being the explosions in 2008 which left over a dozen injured. Some security experts feel the latest attack was most likely the work of the Indian Mujahideen, a group responsible for most of the previous strikes in the region.
Security expert Qamar Agha said: "All indications show that it is one of those typical IEDs (improvised explosive device) used earlier by Indian Mujahideen. They have been consistently targeting the mega cities of India, which are the business hub of this country."
Meanwhile in the aftermath of the latest attack, authorities have stepped up security in all vulnerable cities in the wake of ongoing year-end festivities.
