BERGEN COUNTY

Democrat James Tedesco scored an upset, come-from-behind victory when he defeated Republican incumbent Kathleen Donovan on Nov. 4 after a hard-fought campaign. His win, plus the reelection of Democratic Freeholders David Ganz and Joan Voss, means Democrats will control both the county executive office and the Freeholder Board for the first time in four years starting Thursday.

PASSAIC COUNTY

The Passaic Valley Water Commission, which until 2014 had discussed and approved most aspects of a controversial plan to drain three Garret Mountain reservoirs without public input, took on what appeared to be a spirit of collaboration by years end. After a series of contentious public meetings where opponents blasted the plan to drain the reservoirs and replace them with giant concrete tanks, the commission in November resolved to work with Newarks water authority to merge two reservoirs into one system, thus saving the scenic Great Notch reservoir from being drained and replaced by two 20-million-gallon tanks. A federal rule designed to ensure safe drinking water is driving the plan, which has gotten state approval, but opposition still is running strong against the plans first phases, which would drain the Stanley Levine and New Street reservoirs.

ALLENDALE

Madison Holleran, 19, was remembered for her million-dollar smile and heart of gold by hundreds after she leapt to her death from a Philadelphia parking garage in January. The former Northern Highlands Regional High School soccer and track star had grown depressed throughout her first semester away from home while attending the University of Pennsylvania.

ALPINE

The borough and the PBA finalized a three-year police contract in June, which covers 2014-16. The contract calls for a 2 percent raise for two years and a 1 percent raise for one year. The agreement came after months of hard negotiations. Neither the borough nor the police got what they wanted, said officials. The police had sought 2 percent raises per year while the town was leaning toward zero percent.

MUHLENBERG TWP., Pa. -

The owners of a Berks County restaurant are left cleaning up after a van barreled through the side of the building Friday night.

The Temple Family Restaurant was open at the time. No one was injured.

"My first reaction was thank god no one is hurt," said co-owner George Asimakopoulos."That is a very popular place to sit."

There was extensive damage to one of the seating areas and to the outside of the building.

"When I saw it, I didn't know what happened at first," said one customer at the diner. "I didn't know if it was a car accident. I thought someone got mad or something and threw something at the window."

The owners say a driver lost control of the van, and then plowed through the restaurant.

Despite the damage, the diner is still open for business.

"Tt shouldn't be a problem," said Asimakopoulos. "It should be cleaned up in the next day or two."

The owners have temporarily sealed the hole and are currently looking for a contractor to permanently fix the building.

APRIL

A 1,800-year-old Roman wall in Southgate Street is destroyed to make way for 14 new homes. Witnesses described it as desperately sad.

Meanwhile, a survey on plans for the Extra Care scheme on Chesil Street surface car park is branded a whitewash. Civic chiefs consulted residents, but denounce at what they call a lack of consideration given to alternative sites and officers claims that the car park is underused.

Winchester's great and good are thrown behind bars in full convict gear for a homeless charity. Former mayor Dominic Hiscock joins John Leeson and Roger Matthews to raise thousands of pounds for Trinity Winchester.

Revised plans for Silver Hill are scrutinised at a public exhibition showing public squares and pedestrianised walkways. Stagecoach and developer Henderson clash over new bus routes in the city centre.

On Christmas Eve, Diane Williams of Kinston was doing some last-minute shopping at New Bern Mall when a ceiling tile nearly hit her.

Hundreds of shoppers had more than likely walked under the same spot she walked under when a tile, saturated with rain, came within a foot of striking her on the head.

There were already buckets set up to catch rain, as the roof continually leaked on Christmas Eve, one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

Williams was not injured, nor were the children standing in line to catch a last glimpse of Santa for the season. The leaking water and saturated tile fell nearly 10 feet away from children, including a newborn infant, who was being held by his mother.

In a news release Friday by Coles Hull Doyle, marketing director of Hull Property Group of Augusta, Ga., which owns the facility, said We do our best to provide a first class shopping mall and we have a team dedicated to the facility upkeep of the property.

According to Doyle, a major overhaul of the roof is already in the works for the first quarter of next year.

This will include the repair of the skylights as well as replacing the roof, Doyle said. Due to the extensive nature of the work we had scheduled the work to begin after the holiday shopping season.

It did rain throughout the day on Wednesday, adding to the already damaged roof. However, rings of earlier water damage could be seen near the skylights and on other sections of the roof.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the presence of damp building materials, such as leaks in the roof, wet insulation within a ceiling or wall, or excessive moisture in the building foundation, can lead to the growth of mold, fungi and bacteria.

The CDC further states that research studies have shown that exposures to building dampness and mold have been associated with respiratory symptoms, asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, bronchitis, and various other health-related conditions.
