Both Minnesota groups vying for a Major League Soccer expansion franchise can be encouraged by the varying examples of stadiums, or stadium plans, the league has been willing to work with in its expansion drive.
The Vikings can reference Atlanta's new club, which will play its inaugural 2017 season in a new stadium to be shared with the NFL's Falcons.
Minnesota United FC can look to a once fellow lower-division club in Orlando City SC, which will move to MLS for the 2015 season and will play in the Citrus Bowl stadium until its new soccer-centric home is ready in 2016.
These divergent, yet both agreeable, examples mean the Vikings and United remain viable options to land an expansion franchise despite their own drastically different stadium situations.
The Vikings, United and a groups from Sacramento, Calif., and Las Vegas presented their cases to the league's leadership in November. The four groups await a decision on the league awarding an expansion franchise in the first half of 2015.
"If Minnesota is getting it, which I believe it is, stadiums are first and foremost," said ESPN soccer commentator Taylor Twellman. "There are no ideas of stadiums. There's no this or that. You need to have a stadium approved, and it needs to be ready to rock for a market like this to work, and it needs to be downtown and next to public transit."
The Vikings have a concrete plan. A $1 billion, indoor stadium in downtown Minneapolis is being built and would be ready for soccer in 2017.
United has nascent plans to build a new stadium. The Loons play their North American Soccer League matches at the National Sports Center in Blaine, and one possible plan is an 18,000-seat, natural-grass, outdoor stadium adjacent to Target Field in downtown Minneapolis.
United has not disclosed whether they would seek public financing to help pay for a new stadium. Land acquisition is not considered to be a problem.
Minneapolis City Council President Barb Johnson previously told the Pioneer Press she didn't believe there would be a civic interest in committing public monies to another stadium.

He added that he really prepared himself before working with the director. Yun sabi ko if ever yung expectation ire-ready ko na yung sarili ko. First time ko siguro makakatikim ng talak dahil siyempre direk Chito yan, parang isa sa mga institusyon ng direktor na alam mo mahusay. Sabi ko nga kahit hindi ako kinukunan nandon lang ako nanonood ako kung paano siya mag-direk. Hindi lang importante ang mga artista may chemistry, dapat ang artista at direktor may chemistry din para alam niyo kung ano yung pupuntahan niyo.

Coco Martin on Feng Shui 2: 'Gustong-gusto ko siya gawin'
MANILA - President Benigno Aquino III showed his support for his youngest sister, TV host and actress Kris Aquino, on Thursday by watching her latest movie "Feng Shui" on its first day in cinemas.
"Feng Shui," a sequel to the 2004 film of the same title also starring Aquino, is one of the eight competing entries in this year's Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).
The official Facebook page of President Aquino on Friday posted photos of his attendance at a 4D screening of the Chito Rono film at SM Mall of Asia in Pasay.
The President watched "Feng Shui" with Kris, their sisters, Kris' sons Bimby and Josh, the actress' co-star Coco Martin, and Bimby's co-star Vice Ganda in another MMFF entry "The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin."
Earlier on Christmas Day, President Aquino also watched the comedy film with his family. Bimby's father, basketball player James Yap, also showed his support for the child actor by attending the screening. He was accompanied by his girlfriend Michela Cazzola.
Metropolitan Manila Development Authority chairperson Francis Tolentino, who also heads to the MMFF executive committee, said "Benjamin" and "Feng Shui" are among the four highest earning entries as of 1 p.m. Friday.
The other two are "My Big Bossing" and "Kubot: The Aswang Chronicles."
Tolentino refused to specify the rankings of the films, saying the executive committee is careful not to influence moviegoers by announcing a top favorite in terms of nationwide earnings.

MANILA, Philippines - Feng shui master Hanz Cua said there are many business opportunities for 2015.
"Business prospects for 2015 will be promising. Maraming mga business opportunities na magbubukas sa 2015, ibig sabihin maraming mga trabaho ang lalabas sa 2015," he said in an interview on ANC's Headstart.
He said 2015, the year of the Wood Sheep, is a good time to invest in the "fire" industry such as food, restaurant, LPG, gas, light, electronics, technology, internet and computers.
If you want to enhance your wealth luck for 2015, Cua said you should wear green, which is the color of auspiciousness.
"Ang element of wood is swerte sa atin... Wearing color green, repainting your office, using color green na bag will enhance your wealth luck para sa inyo. Green is the lucky color for 2015," he said.
If you want to enhance your power for 2015, Cua sugegsted wearing red.
"Wearing red color will enhance power and authority for your sign," he said.
