Beachside memorials and prayers across Asia mark 10th anniversary of Indian Ocean tsunami
BANDA ACEH, Indonesia (AP) - Crying onlookers took part in beachside memorials and religious services across Asia on Friday to mark the 10th anniversary of the Indian Ocean tsunami that left more than a quarter million people dead in one of modern history's worst natural disasters.
The devastating Dec. 26, 2004, tsunami struck a dozen countries around the Indian Ocean rim, killing 230,000 people. It eradicated entire coastal communities, decimated families and crashed over tourist-filled beaches the morning after Christmas. Survivors waded through a horror show of corpse-filled waters.
As part of Friday's solemn commemorations, survivors, government officials, diplomats and families of victims gathered in Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, India and elsewhere. Moments of silence were planned in several spots to mark the exact time the tsunami struck, a moment that united the world in grief.
"I cannot forget the smell of the air, the water at that time ... even after 10 years," said Teuku Ahmad Salman, a 51-year-old resident who joined thousands of people in a prayer service in Banda Aceh, Indonesia.
"I cannot forget how I lost hold of my wife, my kids, my house," he said sobbing, recounting that he refused to believe for years that they had died but finally gave up looking for them.
Horror, silence, desperation: 10 AP journalists share indelible memories from 2004 tsunami
Some 230,000 people were killed in the Indian Ocean tsunami set off by a magnitude 9.1 earthquake on Dec. 26, 2004. A dozen countries were hit, from Indonesia to India to Africa's east coast. Scores of Associated Press journalists covered the disaster, and as the 10th anniversary approached, the AP asked 10 of them to describe the images that have stuck with them the most:
Jerry Harmer, AP's editor for video in Indochina, based in Bangkok, reported on the tsunami from Khao Lak, Thailand:
Forty-eight hours after the tsunami, I was on the beach at Khao Lak, where thousands of holidaymakers and locals died. I recorded rescue workers retrieving the corpses that were still strewn across the sand.

We are looking to add a garage to our home. Does anyone have any recommendations?
Make sure the doors are bigger than your cars (-;
if you are a car guy build it as big as possible!
Most certainly don't forget the workshop aka man cave. Wish mine was bigger. Lights and plugs, enough power and wire gauge for the big tools.
I find the people door useful in power failures when electric doors stop working.....
Men and their garages! LOL
My 2-car garage isn't enough... and I don't even have any cars in there.
So that's where you keep all that ammunition, huh, Mark? (-;
Wire it for a Tesla and a lift! And yes, bigger is always better. My garage seems big because it has 14 ft. ceilings, but the footprint is small. With the lawnmower, generator, snowblower, workbench, storage, shop vac and assorted other crap taking up real estate, it's tight. Have to back in my big boy toy into spot #2 and wife pulls into spot #1 . Can barely get into the passenger side of either car. Next house has a 3 car minimum.
Don't make it too narrow - you want to be able to open the car doors. It has to be deep enough to put in a lawn mower or other tools - unless you want / have a shed for that equipment.

When Barbara Klinkel made the decision to buy a home in July 2013, she decided that she did not want a natural wood floor.
Instead, she went with one of the hottest trends in flooring porcelain tiles that have a wood look.
I was out looking at products and fell in love with the look of it, Klinkel said during a recent interview in her elegantly decorated home situated on a cul-de-sac in the Black Hills. I picked the flooring first and then built from there.
Porcelain tiles that have a wood look have become a popular product, according to Jodie Frye of Rapid City-based Roger Fryes Paint and Supply, who worked with Klinkel on her interior dcor.
Though the tiles look like wood, they are made of porcelain, and according to Frye, require less maintenance and are more durable than wood.
Klinkel can attest to the floors durability. Shortly after she moved into her new home, she had an incident that could have resulted in water damage to a standard wood floor.
We hooked up the refrigerator and water dripped from behind for two days before it began to come out the front, Klinkel said. Had this been a wood floor, we would have had a lot more damage.
According to Randall Bren, flooring sales manager of Rapid City-based Black Hills Interiors, porcelain flooring is hard-wearing for many reasons.
Correctly installed, its very durable, highly scratch resistance and can take a lot of traffic, Bren said. You think about a soft surface like wood versus a porcelain surface, this is going to outperform for a long time. The wood can dent and scratch and water will affect it much easier than a porcelain product.
When we start talking about porcelain products, were talking about a rating of a product that allows it to be used as a floor product so its fired longer to flooring specifications, said Bren, adding that a porcelain floor, in general, is considered to be a 50-year life product.

There are some pretty nice perks connected to writing a newspaper column.
Among them: People give me stuff.
Mainly, I get books from publishers hoping for free publicity: interior design, house construction, fix-it guides and gardening books galore. Some are so specific o ne small manual was on planting perennial bulbs (not choosing bulbs, mind you, just planting them) that I cant imagine anyone reviewing them for a general readership.
I have received so many books over the years that they have to be awfully special for me to keep them. Theres only so much room in the house, and I have yet to receive a bookcase in the mail. Apparently, furniture companies dont need publicity.
The rejects I pass along, usually to freshly minted homeowners whom I figure could put to use guides for plumbing repairs or basement remodeling.
And its not just books.
Over the years, Ive opened boxes filled with cleaning wipes, plastic cooking bags, live plants, a miniature washboard (??), toilet seats (one with a self-closing mechanism), a lawn sprinkler disguised as an ugly tropical bird and the sorts of tool kits that people who dont need tools keep in their kitchen junk drawers or on closet shelves.
I pass those along, too.
But my favorite perk is a road trip.
Every couple of years I get an invitation to visit the workshop of someone whos as toolish as I am.
