Protester tear down fences at Oakland plazas slated for renovation

    - December 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

OAKLAND -- Protesters tore down fencing Saturday at two plazas that had been scheduled for renovation, calling the action a "liberation" of public space.

The group used bolt cutters to remove the chain-link fences around St. Andrews Plaza on San Pablo Avenue at 32nd Street, and Bishop Floyd L. Begin Plaza at 22nd Street and San Pablo, where someone spray-painted "no fences, no walls, no borders."

The plazas, located in West Oakland, have been longtime haunts for local residents and the homeless, and the subject of complaints by residents upset over drug use and public drunkenness.

Fences were put up as recently as Thursday at St. Andrews Plaza to prepare for grant-funded renovation projects, city leaders said. By noon Saturday, locals were back at the San Pablo Avenue plaza, where a man who identified himself as David cut hair with clippers for $5 a cut, using a toothbrush as a comb, while members of New Hope Baptist Church handed out spaghetti and salad meals as they do every Saturday.

"I never seen anyone (from the city) come out here and talk to the community," said David, who refused to give his last name. "To me, this is my park. 'Bout time someone stood up."

Oakland Public Works Agency spokeswoman Kristine Shaff said the fences will be replaced.

"We are constantly trying to balance all these needs and wishes and wants and styles and it's really tricky," said Shaff, referencing Oakland's diverse community. "We have our fair share of conflict or where we come up against one another, differences of opinion.

"We don't always get it right the first time. We keep trying."

    'Heartbleed': the web's biggest threat

    - December 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Researchers have disclosed a serious vulnerability in standard web encryption software OpenSSL.

Millions of websites, online stores and social networks are operating with a major security hole in place, exposing user information and financial information to hackers.

That is because a core safety mechanism used to secure the internet has a flaw in it. Worse still, it has been in place for over two years and experts are unsure if it has been exploited for criminal or espionage purposes.

Late on Tuesday, the bombshell hit the web: a Google security engineer and some other researchers published information indicating they had discovered a serious flaw, dubbed "Heartbleed", in numerous but not all versions of the OpenSSL cryptographic software library, which is used to secure millions of websites.

Tech news website The Verge labelled it "the most dangerous security flaw on the web".

"It is catastrophically bad," ICSI security researcher Nicholas Weaver told the website.

Anonymisation software service Tor put it more bluntly: "If you need strong anonymity or privacy on the internet, you might want to stay away from the internet entirely for the next few days "

"This might be a good day to call in sick and take some time to change your passwords everywhere especially your high-security services like email, file storage, and banking, which may have been compromised by this bug," Yahoo's Tumblr said.

"This ... means that the little lock icon (HTTPS) we all trusted to keep our passwords, personal emails, and credit cards safe, was actually making all that private information accessible to anyone who knew about the exploit."

Jefferson City restaurant inspections for November 2014

    - December 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Jefferson City inspected 35 food-service establishments during the month of November.

The inspections note critical and non-critical violations.

Critical violations are the more serious, as they are more likely to compromise food safety and cause health problems. Critical violations often concern improper food temperatures, either on a stove/grill or in holding areas after cooking or before cooking, such as in a refrigerator. They also could involve plumbing repairs, personal hygiene, people who are sick handling food or contamination such as pest infestations.

Non-critical violations are more minor offenses, which could deal with cleaning/maintenance of floors, walls, ceilings, open waste receptacles, unshielded light bulbs in a food preparation area or a missing thermometer in a refrigerator.

    The November inspections noted:

Lewis and Clark Middle School, 325 Lewis and Clark Drive, two non-critical violations: paint flaking and peeling from wall by dish room triple sink and deteriorating cement block due to unpainted water damage; numerous burned-out lights in basement walk-in cooler.

Applebees Neighborhood Grill, 2319 Missouri Blvd., two critical violations: broil side cooler needs holding temperature below 41 degrees; dish machine did not reach 160 degrees and three non-critical violations: inside of prep line table had food debris and splatter present for fry side and the middle section; paper towel holder not working to generate paper towel to dry hands; floors in walk-in cooler had food and debris present.

Wendys Old Fashion Hamburgers, 2108 Missouri Blvd., three critical violations: can opener had food debris present (corrected on site); employee making slaw without gloves; hand sink in drive-up area not draining properly and four non-critical violations: no trash can near back hand sink; shelving unit had peeling and chipping paint near pots and pans, also rusting spots near pots and pans (manager removed all items from this unit); floors in walk-in cooler had food debris present; front upright cooler had frosty debris present on outside.

Aldis Grocery Store, 2225 Missouri Blvd., six non-critical violations: floors in walk-in freezer had food debris and paper debris under the pallets of product; paper and other debris on the floors under racks in dairy walk-in cooler; debris on floor in walk-in meat cooler; inside tracks of all chest freezers dirty; paper and other debris present in front of reach-in frozen coolers; trash and other debris in mop sink.

Brew House Coffee, 1507 E. McCarty St., two critical violations: no sanitizer testable or present in dish machine; employee bare-hand contact with ready-to-eat food (bacon, toast, etc.) in kitchen area and six non-critical violations: worn brush taped with loose bristles; no test kit for chlorine sanitizer; battery in towel dispenser at kitchen hand-wash sink non-functional, therefore no paper towels available; gaskets of espresso two-door cooler and blender base have food residues present, and ceiling fan has hanging dust present; no thermometer available for cooks use.
