Renovation Solutions: Design for everyday homeowners

    - December 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Our message in a nutshell: No, the first step to a remodel is not to call a contractor. Design comes before construction and each professional has their expertise.

Many of our friends and acquaintances are kind enough to tell us they enjoy reading our columns. Other than that, however, we dont get a lot of feedback. So, it was with interest the other day when we received an email commenting on our efforts.

The author was a man with a personal interest in architecture and a professional background in interior design. His comment was that many of the photographs that accompany our articles left something to be desired in terms of interior design, and he recommended that we considered upgrading the performance of our firms current interior designer.

Many medium and large architectural firms do employ a full-time interior designer or even a whole department of interior designers. Our firm, however, is small and we do not have an interior designer on staff. His comments, however, caused us to think about the philosophy of our firm.

We started our firm to bring architecture to the "masses" to real, everyday people. In our previous firm, we seldom worked with clients with budgets less than $1 million. These clients always used interior designers, and the results were generally worthy of publication in glitzy design magazines. At the same time, we noticed that we regularly received phone inquiries from people regarding how to proceed on remodeling their homes, but their budgets were too small for that firm to serve.

The result was that in 2003, we took a deep breath, left our well-established employer, and started a company designed to help homeowners who want good design in their lives, even though their budgets are more "normal" than those served by most architects.

For the last almost 12 years, we have had the privilege of working with 900 clients and uncounted numbers of "investigators" who have come into our office to find out what an architect does, how much they cost, and why would one want to hire one anyway? We have spent countless unpaid hours educating people about the concept of good architectural design and the necessity of having a master plan before one undertakes a home remodel.

Our message in a nutshell: No, the first step to a remodel is not to call a contractor. Design comes before construction and each professional has their expertise. If you wouldnt be comfortable with us swinging the hammer to build your addition, you shouldnt feel good about a contractor designing it.

Security footage of home invasion suspect released

    - December 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Joanne Schnurr, CTV Ottawa Published Thursday, December 18, 2014 1:54PM EST Last Updated Friday, December 19, 2014 7:39PM EST

Ottawa Police have released security footage of a man they believe is responsible for robbing a 101-year-old war veteran.

Police say they're investigating several leads in the search for a suspect wanted in connection with a home invasion Thursday morning involving a 101-year-old decorated war vet.

He fought on the beaches of Normandy to bring peace to this world. At 101 years of age, Colonel Ernest Ct encountered another enemy in his own home Thursday morning in Ottawa. Ct was robbed in a home invasion in his condo on Durham Private in New Edinburgh. It happened when a man buzzed Ct's condo, claiming to be an employee with the city of Ottawa. Ct was tied up and robbed in a violent attack that this war veteran faced with courage. Late Thursday afternoon, Colonel Ernest Ct showed up at Ottawa Police headquarters to give a police statement, mere hours after being tied up and robbed. He didn't want to talk to the media, though.

The Juno Beach vet started his day in a horrifying manner. At 7:30 A.M. , a man buzzed his condo in the secure high-end complex in New Edinburgh, identifying himself as a city of Ottawa employee. Ct let him in.

The suspect then went to victims door, says Staff Sergeant Mike Haarbosch of the Ottawa Police, and asked for cash and when he was refused, he forced his way into the apartment and it was at that point that he bound the victim, who is 101 years of age.

The suspect searched the apartment and made off with several items. Ct managed to free himself and call police.

CTV featured Colonel Ernest Ct recently, for the 70th anniversary of the Normandy landing. It's a battle where Canadian soldiers showed what they were made of; earned respect that should last their life time.

What happened to him in his own home is anything but respectful. So shocking was this attack on a decorated war hero, even the prime minister's wife was compelled to respond.

On Twitter she wrote, Honored to travel to France last June with D-Day vet Ernest Ct. Horrified to read he was robbed. Our thoughts are with him & his family.

Un de Sceaux should make no mistake this time

    - December 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Today at Fairyhouse, at least as far as Im concerned, is all about Un de Sceaux in the two-mile beginners chase.

He made his debut over fences at Thurles last month and arrived with an impeccable record, unbeaten in nine previous races.

Un de Sceaux went off at very prohibitive odds then and, for most of the journey, looked certain to deliver one more time.

Heading to the third last we were cruising along in front and must have held the guts of a 20 lengths lead. But then calamity struck and Un De Sceaux went at the obstacle.

Thankfully, he was largely unscathed and so very much lives to fight another day. Truth to tell that mistake at Thurles was the only one he has made since we started him off over fences.

He has schooled really well since and, to be brutally honest, Im expecting this to be relatively straightforward.

Val de Ferbet makes his debut over fences in the three-mile beginners chase and I am nowhere near as confident regarding his prospects.

The ex-French horse performed twice for Willie Mullins last season, running a shocker first time up at Limerick and then doing somewhat better when fourth at the Punchestown festival.

But neither display, however, matched his excellent home work. Hes also working well now and the trip will suit, but has got to do it on the track.

Uradel, in the three-year-old maiden hurdle, is my third ride of the day and he certainly has plenty to prove as well.

Newtown Township Supervisors approve $12.34M spending plan for 2015; officials working to attract new companies to …

    - December 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

By D.E. Schlatter 21st Century Media

NEWTOWN TOWNSHIP >> The board of supervisors approved its final $12.34-million general fund operating budget for the fiscal year beginning Jan. 1.

The package calls for holding the line on taxes even though the loss of revenue from the planned closing of the Lockheed Martin facility will hit the township the hardest in the coming year.

On Dec. 17, the supervisors voted 3-2 along party lines, with Republicans Mike Gallagher, Ryan Gallagher and Kyle Davis voting in favor of the budget and Democrats Phil Calabro and Jennifer Dix casting dissenting votes.

Unlike many other neighboring municipalities, Newtown does not have a traditional real estate property tax.

However, there is a 2.5 mill tax imposed on property owners which is dedicated to the townships fire protection fund and in paying off debt service on borrowed money.

For 2015, that millage rate will remain unchanged.

Were doing everything to keep the millage rate the same, said township manager Kurt Ferguson, who labeled the budget conservative.

Most of the township's revenues are derived from the one-percent Earned Income Tax (EIT), which is expected to account for almost 60 percent of all general fund revenues in 2015.

However the planned Lockheed Martin closing is expected to adversely affect the townships revenue stream.
