CRYSTAL LAKE The workshop was filled with cannons, varying in size, made of metal and wood, and all different.
One it probably took all winter to make is a train, each billet aluminum piece fitting neatly into each other with a brass boiler and when its maker, Paul LoCascio, lifted the boiler, he revealed a hidden cannon.
Its just in my head, the 71-year-old Crystal Lake man said. Many people ask me where I get the blueprints or designs, I dont use any blueprints or designs.
The cannons are more pieces of art than weaponry; LoCascio doesnt sell anything that can fire.
LoCascio is in the process of arranging an art show featuring his cannons. A date has not been set.
His biggest wish is that someone will come up to him with a challenge for him to make, a problem to solve.
LoCascio showed reporter Emily K. Coleman his collection and talked about his work.
Coleman: What happened? How did you get into this?
LoCascio: Ive been in the home improvement business all my life. Then about four years ago, I started losing my vision. I cant hardly see you. I got forced into retirement. I couldnt work any longer. I was totally depressed. I didnt know what I was going to do. I couldnt run the business anymore, so forth and so on.
Normally when we strip a house with aluminum siding, we would get the aluminum, and instead of just dumping it in the garbage, we would take it over to the scrapyard and turn it into scrap. It was a little bit of money.

LAS VEGAS -- Seoul-headquartered "4D" cinema company CJ 4DPlex has inked a deal with AEG to install its first U.S.-based 4DX system at Regal Cinemas L.A. Live Stadium 14 in Los Angeles, which will be a 100-seat theater expected to be completed in late June or early July.
This timing would offer the possibility to launch with one of CJ 4DPlex's upcoming 4D titles such as DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon 2, which, along with Paramount's Noah, will be previewed in 4D this week in a demonstration during theater owners confab CinemaCon.

Also scheduled for 4DX-supported theaters are titles such as Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
In 2013, there were 58 titles mastered in the format, including Gravity, Frozen, Iron Man 3 and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.
Company execs said they aim to work with the filmmakers to create these experiences, which combine 3D with features such as motion, wind, strobe, fog, mist, rain and "scent-based" effects.

L.A. Live reps said the company had not yet determined what the surcharge will be for the 4D experience. Meanwhile, CJ 4DPlex plans to continue to target major U.S. cities for additional sites.
It currently has 91 theater installations in 23 countries, including Bulgaria, China, Chile, Czech Republic, Hungary, Japan, the United Arab Emirates and Venezuela.
It opened in Vietnam during January, and next month plans to debut in India and the Philippines.

Architects practising in the country need to be proactive as the profession has never been known to be retrogressive, the Principal Partner, ATO Architects, Mr. Ayoola Onajide, has said.
You have to design yourself out of where you are in order to collectively propel the architecture profession to a higher level, he said.
Onajide spoke at the second annual ATO lecture held in Lagos with the theme, Architecture: Substance and Shadows; random musings from over three decades of practice.
The keynote speaker, Mr. Olusegun Ladega, also spoke on commoditisation of architecture; the place of beauty in architecture; architecture and identity; and the Nigerian character.
According to him, architecture has never been known to be retrogressive and has remained an expression of life, times, aspirations and the society as a whole.
He said, Architecture of any age has always reflected the limits of engineering and scientific knowhow of the time. Architecture practice is gradually imbibing the asoebi syndrome, in which buildings are indistinguishable.
An architectural work becomes commoditised when one offering is nearly indistinguishable from another. As a result of technological innovation, broad-based education and frequent iteration, goods and services become commoditised and therefore widely accessible. Many architects describe themselves as building designers or administrators of the building construction contract. This inaccurate and deceptive definition of the profession has not only led to a belittling of the architect but has also grossly undermined the architects professional fees and remuneration.
Ladega said that the other challenge the practice was facing was the value that the country placed on intellectual property. There is a total disregard for intellectual property rights, he added.
The annual lecture, in its second edition, was aimed at raising the bar of practice in the country, the organisers noted.
According to Onajide, practitioners are caught up in a dilemma where they want to be artists, professionals and also want to be regarded as businessmen.

A PAIR of architects from Bolton are taking the building world by storm after completing a multi-million pound project to create a landmark library and concert hall inside the Arctic Circle.
Designer Daniel Rosbottom grew up in Westhoughton and Atherton, and now combines the position of Head of Architecture and Landscape at Kingston University with being co-director of London-based company DRDH Architects, which the 45-year-old founded in 2000 with his partner David Howarth.
The firm rapidly expanded and in 2005 they took on another Boltonian, Richard Marks as an associate.
Now the company is celebrating after completing its most ambitious project to date a 110 million library and concert hall for the Norwegian town of Bod, which will be a new home for the Arctic Philharmonic orchestra.
The company was initially chosen from 193 architects who entered a competition to produce a master plan for redevelopment of the towns cultural quarter, which had been badly damaged in the Second World War.
But their design for stark white concrete buildings overlooking the picturesque harbour did not initially find favour with all the residents with some comparing the design to a fish oil plant or margarine factory.
However, over the five years the buildings taken shape they have grown on the towns 50,000 inhabitants and an estimated 20 per cent of the population turned up for the librarys recent opening.
It is thought that 10 per cent of all Norwegians also tuned in their televisions to watch the halls inaugural concert, which was attended by Crown Prince Haakon.
Mr Marks, a 36-year-old former Canon Slade High School pupil, said: It is quite unusual for a small practice to be given a commission like this.
At some point pretty much the whole office was working on it.
