Marts Appliance Service set to close after 50 years of business.

    - December 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Paul and Marlene Page have owned Marts Appliance Service, at 7423 East Valley Parkway, since 1964. Since 2002, they have been the only small appliance fix-it shop left in the county. December 31 will be the last day for the long-time Escondido business.

Its the end of an era, said Paul. Were like the buggy whip makers of the 21st Century. Because were old, Marlene jokingly said.

At one time, Marts was the factory- authorized service center for most name-brand small kitchen appliances, lamps, and power tools. But as explained by Paul, more and more companies are less likely to provide a supply of after-market parts.

We can gets parts for products assembled in Mexico, but usually not in China, said Paul. Its become cheaper for companies to provide warranty service by simply providing the consumer a new product. After the warranty expires, consumers usually end up buying a newer version of the item. Most small appliance brands have a newer, updated version on the market every six months.

A large portion of their business was servicing more expensive powered construction tools drills, saws, and sanders. Servicing espresso machines and KitchenAid mixers also provided steady customers. Weve got 10 mixers right now we are servicing, said Paul.

Both of their service technicians, Antonio and Jamie, have a combined 44 years experience serving small appliances. But the small shop never got into trying to repair complicated electronic circuitry.

The real reason behind the couple wanting to retire? Four grandchildren are graduating this summer three high schoolers and one from college. The couple have never been able to travel away from their business for more than a weeks time.

The sad thing is, said Paul, people are coming in now saying they never knew we were here. Customers of Marts will be referred to Orange Countys California Electric Service, a fix-it shop in Lake Forrest.

Fire Rips Through Historic Towanda Apartment Building, Chases 16

    - December 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Towanda, Bradford County -- Photos showed the early stages of a fierce fire that ripped through an apartment building in Towanda. It was Saturday morning around 10:30 when flames shot from the historic brick building known as Bailey Block at the corner of Main Street and Seebick Alley. "It was a stubborn fire to fight," said Towanda Fire Chief Bill Roff. As smoke poured from the fire scene, he said what made things especially stubborn was the age and construction of Bailey Block. "With the brick building and the number of apartments in there it was hard to get everybody out." But that they did -- including one tenant in an apartment who didn't realize for about a half-hour that the building was on fire. "There was a woman on the south side apartment third floor in the window waving to us, so we got a ladder up to her, but she ended up coming down the stairs herself getting herself out," said Chief Roof.

Nine families totaling 16 people had to evacuate. Chief Roof says the fire started in a second floor apartment and spread through a common attic. The difference maker in containing the fire was helped by upwards of 100 firefighters who left their families to respond on a cold, December day. "We had a lot of manpower here for one thing and the ladder trucks were a tremendous help. And then the fire wall stopped it from spreading to the other building."

Another tremendous help according to North Towanda Fire & Rescue volunteer Derric Bailey

was the community itself which rallied to respond in a time of crisis. "We've got firefighters and volunteers from all over Bradford County showing up to help. People that came on mutual aid calls and also people that just showed up from the community in general to do what they can. We've had cash donations dropped off at the Dandy Mini Mart to go directly to the fire department. We've even had private citizens show up with food out of their own kitchens to help out any way they can."

Chief Roof says it appears careless smoking is to blame for the Towanda fire. The Red Cross is providing food clothing and shelter to the fire victims.

Pope praises Our Lady of Guadalupe as great missionary of 'our America' By Cindy Wooden Catholic News Service

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Preceded by a procession of flags from the nations of the Americas and the recitation of the rosary in Spanish, Pope Francis and thousands of Catholics from across the Atlantic celebrated the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe in the Vatican.

The Argentina-born pope celebrated the Dec. 12 Mass to the sounds and rhythms of many of South America's indigenous peoples; the principal sung parts of the Mass were from the "Misa Criolla," composed 50 years ago by the late Ariel Ramirez. His son, Facundo Ramirez, conducted the choir that featured Patricia Sosa, a famous Argentine singer, as well as guitars and traditional instruments from the continent. (full story)
