Kirksville school buildings to receive roof replacements

    - December 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- A new roofing replacement bid for schools in the Kirksville District were recently approved by the school board.

That bid for $555,946 comes from Missouri Builders, Inc. of Jefferson City. The buildings that will be receiving partial roof replacements are Kirksville High School and the Primary School.

The board gave the ok for the company to do two additional projects to save money on repairs in the future. Those are: The replacement of roofing over the stage at the Primary School, and the construction of an enclosed ladder to provide access to the roof. Board members all agreed that the roof replacement is something that needs to happen now, in order to avoid further deterioration.

"At this point in time, at the High School, you go walking through and look at the gym and you can see big spots, water stains on the gym roof. It's incredibly important to replace the roof to help protect the floor," said Dr. Damon Kizzire, Kirksville Schools Superintendent.

Dr. Kizzire told KTVO that the roofing project is expected to take place next summer.

Nature vs. man Keeping the lights on

    - December 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

New Hampshire's largest electric utilities have substantially increased their tree-trimming budgets since the great ice storm of 2008. They are taking away more limbs and taking down more trees in a wider zone around power lines than ever before.

The Thanksgiving Day storm, which left more than 200,000 electricity customers without power, put the question of tree trimming back in the spotlight.

Utility representatives say the number of outages in recent storms could have been a lot worse, but there's no way they could trim enough trees to win every war with Mother Nature in the most heavily forested state in the country.

The 2008 ice storm prompted utilities to look harder at mitigating weather-related electrical outages.

"After that, the Public Utilities Commission brought in some consultants to look at all the utilities in New Hampshire, and how they responded to that ice storm," said Bob Allen, supervisor of Public Service of New Hampshire's vegetation management program.

The consultant's report, among other things, recommended more aggressive tree trimming and removal. After that, PSNH, which serves 70 percent of the state, launched a program to trim one-quarter of the "maintenance miles" in its franchise area each year.

By the end of this year, the utility will have completed the first four-year cycle, having trimmed every mile of its network between 2010 and 2014, according to Allen.

"Of course if we get a fatal storm tonight or tomorrow, we might not finish," he said. "But I believe we will finish the fourth year and be on cycle."

Inpex sheds 1,400 jobs in Darwin just before Christmas

    - December 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Oil company Inpex is shedding around 1,400 jobs from its Icthys construction project near Darwin, forcing many families to brace for a tough Christmas season.

The number of job cuts was planned, with the civil works phase of the LNG project nearing completion.

But unions are upset at the abruptness of the job cuts, saying it is flooding the local market with unemployed blue collar workers at a time when there is traditionally few jobs available in construction.

Sacked worker Kylie Wright said it was a terrible time of year to have no income.

"Over the holiday season, you're kids are going to be let down, your grandkids are going to be let down," she said.

The 43-year-old mother of two said she was angry at the company for the way they handled the layoffs.

"The way they've done it I thought it was wrong. You hop on a bus, go to work, get a tap on the shoulder, back on the bus, off you go home."

More than half of the 1,400 laid off are local tradesmen, such as concreters, plumbers and steel fixers.

Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union NT organiser Shaun Taylor said he was unhappy Inpex continued to hire staff until October in a bid to accelerate work before the wet season arrived.

"If you're going to build something of this calibre in the Northern Territory, the wet season is just part of doing business, and there are ways to get around it," he said.

    Reimagining Pelican Hall

    - December 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Norma Tiefel pauses for a moment as she steps up from the pool deck into her outdoor loggia, leading a visitor on a tour of her extensively renovated home, Pelican Hall, which was built in 1937 in the Estate Section. With her are husband Bill and their architect, Jeffery Smith.

Surveying the poolside pavilion, she explains that the loggia was much smaller when the former owners added it nearly 30 years ago.

I said to Jeff, We dont have a big enough loggia. Triple it, she recalls. Do you remember that, Jeff?

Do I remember? responds Smith, his wry smile indicating that indeed he does.

The loggia, today, is expansive, large enough for a sitting area, a dining table and a bar facing the new pool.

Enlarging the loggia was just one detail in a complex, three-year renovation and expansion project that was honored Friday by the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach. During a luncheon at The Breakers, the Tiefels accepted the annual Robert I. Ballinger Award, which recognizes historically sensitive renovation projects at large estates.

Back in the loggia, Bill Tiefel directs his guests attention to the wall behind the bar. On it is displayed a slatted bamboo screen from the 1920s, painted with an Asian scene. Bill presses a button, and to his obvious delight, the screen raises to reveal a flat-screen television.

His wife explains that she was glad to have found a suitable spot for the antique screen, which she had acquired years before the couple bought Pelican Hall in 2008; the matching screen is in the cabana bath directly opposite the bar.

If you own it, use it, she says. I want things around me that are meaningful.

Businesses buckling down for end of light rail construction

    - December 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Mesa TV & Appliance salesman Brian Richardson has a problem: His customers cant turn left into his driveway.

Light rail construction has divided Main Street into two one-way streets, and Richardson said its making business horrible.

When a customer is travelling eastbound looking for appliances, they cannot make a left-hand turn onto my driveway here, he said. So what theyll do theyll continue on and then make a right turn and go to my competition.

    A tough stretch

Mesa TV & Appliance is not the only store off Main Street hurting because of the light rail construction, which is anticipated to finish in spring 2015. The extension will add stations to Alma School Road, Country Club Drive, Center Street and Mesa Drive.

Crew members hammer and weld, and cement trucks surround the unfinished tracks with a load to pour. Long lines of cars stream through the one-way roads. The intersection on Country Club Drive and Main is sometimes closed on the weekends, making things worse, Richardson said.

La Tiendita Caf, another store near the intersection of Main Street and Country Club Drive, spends portions of its mornings vacant of customers. Owner German Pardo said he hopes the expansion of the light rail will become a boon for local businesses.

Definitely, I think it will help. Its going to be better for everybody. The problem is, in the meantime, staying alive, he said. Because I know there are some businesses that went out of business. Once youre out of business, youre out of business.

Pardo said his caf would have closed a long time ago if it didnt bill itself as the sole Colombian-style restaurant in Arizona. La Tiendita Caf was less than a year old when Valley Metro began expanding the light rail from the current final stop at Dobson Road to Mesa Street, unlike Mesa TV & Appliance, which has built a customer base over 69 years.

Pardo says hes losing $4,000 to $5,000 per month due to the construction.

Remodeling Copps Hill starts in January

    - December 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Here are plans from developer Steve Zemo to remodel part of the Copps Hill Commons complex at 109 Danbury Road. Construction is scheduled to begin early in January.

Getting fit in the new year is a popular resolution and it may be a little easier in 2015, thanks to renovation plans at 109 Danbury Road, a part of the Copps Hill Commons marketplace, that are set to begin on Jan. 2.

Our main goal is to remarket this space to make it more of an extension of the healthy living style on the upper level, said owner Steve Zemo.

Physically, the buildings lower level west faade that faces Kohls will receive elevated signage as well as new dormers and windows.

The building isnt going to be any higher, but the improvements will give an illusion that it is higher, Mr. Zemo said.

Were not adding any additional footage; were just trying to make it look more visually appealing, he said.

Commercially, the outside changes, along with major renovations to the inside space, will create opportunities for new businesses two to three, according to Mr. Zemo to join the 6,500-square-foot complex.

The new businesses will have to meet a certain requirement.

They will have to be complementary to the health and wellness lifestyle that we are trying to promote there, Mr. Zemo said.

Its had a fitness use since 1986, and the current business, The Fitness Studio, is relocating, but we really want to build off of that track record of having some sort of physical activity in that spot, he said.
