MCE emergency room entrance, parking changes Dec. 12-14

    - December 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Medical Center Enterprise is preparing for many upcoming construction projects in the coming months, including two projects this weekend.

Between Dec. 12 and 14, the patient parking lot located across the street from the hospital is being completely restriped to create a better flow of traffic for patients and visitors.

Parking will be blocked off in sections but alternate parking will be available close to the entrance to the hospital. Also, during equipment installation, all patients and visitors will be asked to enter through the emergency room entrance through a door marked Emergency until installation is complete.

Once installation is complete, all visitors can enter through the main entrance, located under a sign that says Hospital once again. All hospital services will continue as usual during these projects, but visitors and patients are advised to follow signage and instructions.

This construction is all part of a $1.3 million renovation project that will create a new, modernized look for MCE. Construction has already begun on the Medical Centers third floor, the medical inpatient floor and future plans include the remodeling of the second floor patient rooms.

Some projects that have already been completed are the addition of new flooring for the main lobby and the emergency room, as well as an addition of a multi-purpose classroom in the lobby of the Womens Center.

Colorado legislature undergoes change with office moves, remodeling

    - December 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Democratic Sen. Linda Newell of Littleton packs up her office at the Colorado Capitol in preparation to move to another office on December 9, 2014. Lawmakers in both the House and the Senate are moving offices, the biggest change is in the Senate where Republicans are moving into the majority offices for the first time in a decade. Republicans won the majority in the November elections. (Craig F. Walker, The Denver Post)

WATCH: Learn more about renovations at the Colorado Capitol

Visitors to the state Capitol on Tuesday weaved in and out of carts loaded with boxes and furniture as Senate Democrats migrated for the first time in a decade to the minority offices and Senate Republicans moved into the vacated digs.

"It's moving day," said Sen. Linda Newell, D-Littleton, trying to figure out what to do with all of her stuff because she had been assigned to a smaller office.

But the move is more than just exchanging offices. Extensive remodeling is going on under the Gold Dome to restore the Senate and House chambers to their original look and to give more lawmakers individual or bigger offices. Hard-hat-only signs are still displayed in spots at the Capitol.

Almost half of the lawmakers will have offices across East Colfax Avenue in what was the attorney general's building and now houses other state operations, including the personnel department.

Back at the Capitol, what used to be the House Services Office, which included bullpens for individual lawmakers, a reception area and mail boxes, has been gutted and will be a large committee room.

WATCH: Democrats move into their new offices at the Colorado Legislature

Next door, the Senate Minority Office has new carpet and new tile. Gone are the tiny cubicles outside the minority leader and assistant minority leader's offices that housed six lawmakers, replaced with individual offices for three lawmakers. Senate Democrats will call this home for the next two years.

Middle schools to get APS remodeling funds next

    - December 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) Albuquerque Public Schoolssays parents can expect construction to shift towards middle schools in the near future. The district cut the ribbon on one of its latest construction projects Tuesday, holding an open house at Dolores Gonzales Elementary near the Rio Grande Zoo. Some of the highlights include new classrooms, a new playground, a new a music room and a soon to be completed remodeled cafeteria.

Teachers say the work means a lot to them and the kids.

They feel so special, they feel so fortunate and lucky to be in this place, said Valerie Barrera a kindergarten teacher at Dolores Gonzales Elementary School.

While Delores Gonzales Elementary has been on the docket for a major revamp for years, the district says there are a lot of other schools that need work, including many middle schools.

It never stops, said Kizito Wijenje, executive director for Albuquerque Public Schools Capital Master Plan program.

Wijenje says for about the last six years, APS has put hundreds of millions of dollars into revamping high schools and building new schools. But with enrollment leveling off, the district says its shift its focus.

The emphasis is rejuvenating our older schools, starting with our high schools, our older schools on average are 50 to 60 years old, said Wijenje.

In the next six months, APS says it will break ground on remodeling at Rio Grande High in the South Valley, West Mesa High near Coors and Interstate 40, and Valley High School in the North Valley. The projects are top priority according to the districts current five-year Capital Master Plan which ends in 2016. Its not just the high school though.

We also will be looking into rebuilding most of the middle schools, said Wijenje.

    Rebuilding, rebranding Eddys Resort

    - December 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe is nearing completion of a major redevelopment of the Eddys Mille Lacs Resort on the western shores of Mille Lacs Lake in Onamia.

The redevelopment, anchored by a new lakeside hotel and restaurant, is meant to position Eddys as a world-class resort and restaurant on the lake, says the band.

Construction is scheduled to be done before the 2015 spring fishing opener. As far as the projects developers are concerned, the timing couldnt be better.

Mille Lacs Lake, long known as an ideal place to wet a line, is being rebranded as a destination that offers more than good fishing, said Joe Nayquonabe, CEO of Mille Lacs Corporate Ventures, the projects developer.

Its actually a great recreation lake, too sailing, canoeing, kayaking in the summer and kite boarding in the winter, Nayquonabe said. We realized that we needed to play a part in that rebranding and bring new amenities to this area. Our opportunity was a rebuild of Eddys Resort.

The band isnt disclosing the cost of the project. But the construction cost for the hotel and restaurant is $10 million, according to a Mille Lacs County building permit.

Amenities include 64 new hotel rooms, a Parlour suite, and two- and three-room cabins north of the resort across the access road. The new space will offer a large meeting room, a restaurant, a marina, and a retail/bait shop, he said.

One big change includes moving the building closer to the lake so visitors can better enjoy the views. Previously, a parking lot stood between the hotel and the lake.

You are not looking at the parking lot and the lake; you are looking at the lake, said Darin Engelby, project manager for PCL Construction in Burnsville, the projects builder.

The project, designed by Minneapolis-based BKV Group, comes at a time when the Mille Lacs Band is diversifying its investments.
