A Sanford man is facing multiple charges after sheriff's deputies say they found him under a home attempting to take copper wiring, according to a release from Sheriff Neil Godfrey.

Edward Andrew Gorton, 36, of 271 Twin Ponds Road, Sanford, was arrested on Dec. 4 and charged with one count of felony breaking and entering, one count of felony larceny and one count of felony possession of stolen goods.

Godrey reported that his office received a call from a concerned citizen about a suspicious suspectthe caller had observed at a residence on N.C.24/27 near Carthage.

Deputies responded and located an unoccupied van near the residence. Deputies searched the area for the vans occupants and found Gorton, the vehicles registered owner, under a nearby residence from which he was attempting to steal copper wiring, Godfrey said.

Gorton was confined in the Moore County Detention Center under a $10,000 secured bond. His first court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 23, 2014 in the Moore County District Court in Carthage.

DEAR CAR TALK: I have a 2010 Smart car. The check engine light would not stay off.

I took it to the dealer before the warranty expired. They found nothing wrong and told me I probably had a bad tank of gas, and that I should wait for it to get used up and fill it with good gas next time. I did that, and sure enough, the light went off.

But a few weeks later, the light was back on. The same thing happened new tank of gas, light goes off, then comes back on. Finally the light stayed on permanently, but by then it was no longer under warranty.

So the dealer switched sensors to see what that would do. I didnt even make it home before the light was back on.

This time, they said they would come and get it (I live 45 minutes away) and bring me a loaner.

A day later, they told me I need a cylinder head because I have a leaking valve, and it will cost $3,400. The guy said that, since I have less than 10,000 miles on the car and Id brought the problem to their attention while it was still under warranty, hed agreed to cover all but $500, which I am to pay. In my opinion, they should cover all of it. Thanks. Mary

Dear Mary: I agree with you completely. This clearly was a manufacturing defect. The engine failed at less than 10,000 miles thats ridiculous. And you brought the defect to their attention while the car was still under warranty.

What possible justification do they have for charging you $500? The whole things on them. If they had figured it out the first time you took it to them, it would have been under warranty. So theyre billing you for their own ineptness in taking months to figure out what was wrong.

It was nice of them to come and pick up your car after the second time they failed to solve the problem. But in billing you for $500, they want to see if youll roll over and give them the money. Dont.

The second edition of the nationwide cleaning exercise which came off on Saturday, did not receive the expected patronage from the public in some areas of Accra.

The local government Ministry initiated the campaign in November 2014 to rid the country of filth after several hundreds of people contracted cholera and some deaths recorded. Many Ghanaians did not participate in the exercise in November, prompting officials of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to put in more measures to whip up interest in subsequent months.

Public Relations Officer of the Assembly, Nuumo Blafo told Citi News in an earlier interview that the Assembly was dissatisfied with the initial turnout.

Shops were opened while they should be closed and refuse were left on the shoulders of the roads We have added two tipper trucks to collect the filth gathered on the shoulders of the road. We have sent out enough information ahead of the second exercise, he said.

However, Citi News checks on some streets of Accra showed the turnout did not improve.

Citi News reporter Eugenia Tenkorang, who visited some areas in Adabraka in Accra, including Odawna and the Adabraka markets, reported that very few people participated in the national event.

At Odawna, close to the Odawna Clinic, there was only one person, Kofi Sarfo, who was cleaning dirty and choked drains.

Kofi Sarfo had no gloves, boots, nose covers or other protective equipment or cleaning tools.

The next Moses Lake Irrigation and Rehabilitation District election is scheduled for Next Tuesday, Dec. 9. Here is part of what RCW 87.03.033 about absentee ballots: To be counted in a given election, an absentee ballot must conform to these requirements: It must be sealed in an unmarked envelope and delivered to the district's principal office prior to the close of the polls on the day of that election; or be sealed in an unmarked envelope and mailed to the district's secretary, postmarked not later than midnight of that election day and received by the secretary within five days of that date.

There is one way to make sure your main-in ballot is postmarked; physically take it to the post office counter and ask to have it hand stamped. The post office employee should hand stamp the envelope while you watch.

If you are going to participate in this election and have questions, call the MLIRD office and clarify your concerns.

Students assist food bank distribution

Volunteers transport food each Tuesday from the Moses Lake Food Bank to Pioneer Village, a senior apartment building, for distribution to 60 households. Once at Pioneer Village, the food is displayed on tables where residents file through the line to collect food.

Three Moses Lake High School students, Julianne Combs, Kayla Ottolini and Rebecca (last name misplaced) have been spending their Tuesday lunch period at the facility, across Sharon Avenue from the high school, helping hand out the food.
