Dozens of people across the state own tame foxes that are considered as much a part of the family as any cat or dog.

Foxes are to be officially declared a pest species across NSW.

Fairfax Mediacan reveal a Local Land Services (European Red Fox) Pest Control Order 2014 will be gazetted by theNSW government in the next fortnight.

The decision follows a draft order released for public feedback in October, which attracted almost 1800 submissions the majority of which were in favour of the law being passed.

The order bringsNSWinto line with all other states and paves the way for the "co-ordinated control" of a feral species estimated to cost Australia's environment and economy more than $227 million annually. However, the law also signals the death knell for a registered charity called Sydney Fox Rescue which, for three years, has saved injured and orphaned fox cubs and, through various socialisation programs, successfully adopted them out as pets.

But those owners must now apply for a permit from Local Land Services to keep their animals. It will now be illegal to keep any new foxes in captivity. And by law, any fox cub that is found abandoned or injured in the future must be euthanised.

In a statement to be released on Monday, Minister for Primary Industries KatrinaHodgkinson, who is responsible for allNSWnational parks, describes the order as a move that will benefit "landowners and the wider community", adding: "Foxes are not companion animals this pest control order sends the clear message that they are pests, not pets."

Sydney Fox Rescue confirmed on Saturday that it lodged a proposal during the draft consultation phase for the inclusion of a "permit system" that would allow it to continue its work, and for people to continue keeping foxes privately.

Use Plants To Warn Visitors Of Tripping Points In Your Yard

HANNA, Alta. - Southern Alberta will soon be sporting a brand new provincial park named Antelope Hill thanks to a generous donation from a retired farmer near Hanna.

Gottlob Schmidt, 90, has lived in the area for more than 80 years and donated his homestead to Alberta Parks.

Tim Chamberlin with Environment and Sustainable Resource Development says the donation has been in the works for awhile.

Chamberlin says the landscape is just beautiful and is a terrific gift from a wonderful Albertan.

He adds the planning stages are just getting started, but doesnt anticipate a large cost to getting the new park ready for the public.

The area of the park is home to rare native grasslands, aspen groves, wetlands as well as a variety of wildlife.

Once Antelope Hill opens to the public, the park will be used for low-impact recreation, such as hiking and will not permit hunting, camping or vehicle use at Schmidt's request.

A NEW South Wales farmer who starved himself to protest laws preventing him from clearing his own land has grilled former Federal environment minister Dr David Kemp over why the legislation was enacted.

Peter Spencer is locked in a three-week Federal Court property rights hearing in Sydney to fight for compensation for his bankrupt sheep farming business from the Federal and NSW governments.

He made headlines in 2010 when he was hospitalised after a 52-day hunger strike protest on his property near Cooma.

Dr Kemp was questioned over the Commonwealth's commitment to achieve carbon emission reduction levels set out by the Kyoto Protocol which led to a change in legislation.

He agreed the reduction of land clearing, especially in NSW and Queensland, was seen as the most important aspect of the scheme.

"The government I was associated with was determined to reach the targets and believed it had in place the policies to reach those targets," he said.

Mr Spencer has argued the Commonwealth should not be allowed to profit, through carbon offset rights, from restrictions on clearing land it does not own without properly compensating the landowner.

He blames the introduction of state laws which made it illegal for him to clear about 80% of his land for destroying his now-defunct farming business.

Dr Kemp agreed Australia was falling behind in 2001 and 2002 of its target to keep annual emissions to 108% of 1990 levels.

The NSW Native Vegetation Act was enacted in 2003, requiring landholders to gain a permit before clearing any native vegetation on their property.

Sanford man charged with stealing copper wiring from Carthage home

CARTHAGE - A Sanford man was arrested Thursday after Moore County Sheriff's deputies found him under a house trying to steal copper wiring.

Edward Andrew Gorton, 36, of the 200 block of Twin Ponds Road in Sanford, was charged with breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods, according to a statement released Saturday by the Moore County Sheriff's Office. Bail was set at $10,000.
