Hastings Women's Rest relocates for renovations

    - December 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Hastings Womens Rest building in Civic Square has been closed to the public while a remodelling project is undertaken.

Hastings District Council has contracted Waipukurau Construction to undertake the building renovations that includes the installation of a new roof, insulation, electrical wiring, painting, and flooring. In addition to Councils building maintenance work, the Heretaunga Womens Centre Incorporated Society has raised funds to undertake some minor interior alterations to the reception area, office and kitchen and to install new lighting and heating. It also intends to update the buildings furniture, curtains and signage.

Hastings District Deputy Mayor Cynthia Bowers says "The Womens Rest is a Category 1 heritage building constructed in the early 1920s. It was the first purpose built womens rest rooms in Australasia. The building is well recognised as part of the Hastings historic landscape and this project will ensure that the building is available for use well into the future."

Cynthia Bowers says "The Womens Rest has always played an important role for women and these refurbishments will ensure that this continues."

The Heretaunga Womens Centre Society, Chair Genevieve Beech says "We are delighted to see this project begin and are grateful to Hastings District Council for all the work that is being undertaken. The Heretaunga Womens Centre will continue to offer low-cost counselling and an information Centre from the Lotus Holistic Centre at 1028 St Aubyn Street while the Womens Rest building is closed."

Genevieve Beech says, "The renovation of the Womens Rest building will significantly increase the Centres ability to deliver community services in a safe, warm and supportive environment. The Centre currently has 37 counseling clients, but continues to have a long waiting list. Once the upgrade is complete, the Centre will be able to expand its counseling service and extend the number of low-cost courses that are offered. It will deliver more support groups for the growing number of elderly women in our community and for Maori and migrant women."

The Heretaunga Womens Centre is grateful to the following organisations for their support; The Anne-Marie OSullivan Foundation; Eastern and Central Community Trust; Lotteries; COGS; Vavasour Charitable Trust; Hawkes Bay Foundation; The Lion Foundation; Endeavour Community Foundation Ltd; Infinity Foundation; Springhill Charitable Trust and Frimley Foundation; Flaxmere Licensing Trust; Community Post; Holcim Hastings Quarry; The John Mitchell McLachlan Charitable Trust; Sanderson Trust; Pam Torbett Charitable Trust; Bernard Chambers Trust and Piccolini Kindergartens.

The project is expected to be completed by March 2015.

Chilly? Free home energy audits available in Montana

    - December 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

6 hours 35 minutes ago by MTN News

Looking to save money on your utility bill this winter? You may be interested in a free home energy audit by NorthWestern Energy.

As part of NorthWestern Energy's E+ program, a team of energy experts will be working throughout Montana the month of December.

The team has a number of openings for the audits, which provide a detailed report on a home's energy use, weatherization tips and information on energy-efficient practices. In some cases, the experts may, at no charge, install water-heater wraps, low-flow shower heads, low-flow faucet aerators and insulation of hot-water pipes.

The auditors will also inspect natural-gas fueled appliances and perform blower tests to spot areas of air leakage in homes.

The free audits can be scheduled by calling (800) 823-5995 or customers can fill out a form at NorthWesternEnergy.com/audit and a representative will call the customer at their convenience for scheduling.

Residential customers whose space or hot-water heating fuels are delivered by NorthWestern Energy, have not had an E+ audit in the past and whose home is more than five years old are eligible for an on-site energy audit. Other restrictions may apply and funding for the audit program, provided by the Universal System Benefits program, is limited.

THE first stage of the cenotaph relocation plan occurred with the removal of the tree that has long adorned the lawns of the Mount Isa Civic Centre this week

THE first stage of the cenotaph relocation plan occurred with the removal of the tree that has long adorned the lawns of the Mount Isa Civic Centre this week.

With a unanimous decision by the Mount Isa City Council and the Mount Isa RSL to relocate the cenotaph in the lead up to the 100th anniversary of the landing at Anzac Cove, the plan to create a new memorial in the prominent CBD space was set in motion.

The trees removal and relocation comes as plans for the 2015 Anzac Day ceremony, including brand new cenotaph, commence.

Mayor Tony McGrady said the removal of the tree marked the beginning of an exciting project that aimed to best recognise and honour war heroes from throughout the region and the nation.

The existing tree has been relocated to the Mount Isa City Council nursery, where it will be cared for and nurtured, he said.

The tree will eventually be replanted at its new home within the Mount Isa Sunset Memorial Cemetery.

The trees removal makes way for the new memorial that will feature an eternal flame, distinct landscaping and full lighting which will allow the people of Mount Isa to remember fallen heroes at any time of the day.

Anzac Day 2015 in Mount Isa is set to be an unforgettable ceremony, with plans by the Mount Isa City Council and the Mount Isa RSL sub-branch currently underway.

Stockton Man Surveys Damage after Tree Falls into Home

    - December 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    STOCKTON-

A Stockton resident is assessing the damage at his home after a tree came crashing into his kitchen Wednesday afternoon.

The tree that came crashing down into the home is a Heritage Oak Treeand this is where the issue lies its a tree protected by the city but ended up as a danger for the the Rubianes family.

We heard this big bang, Rubianessaid.

That loud sound, is a Heritage Oak tree. Its taking stock in Raymond Rubianesshome, a house hes loved for 15 years, and is now damaged by a protected tree.

Scared us both (he and his wife) because we had a feeling this was going to happen, he told FOX40.

The two were eating lunch in their bedroom when the tree came crashing down. Both safe, but shaken.

I thank God that Raymond and I are alive, Rubianes wife told loved ones who visited and comforted the couple Thursday morning.

Rubianes claims hes been trying to get clearance from Stockton officialsto trim and maintain the tree for years.

They were passing the buck. I asked somebody, Oh, you got to call this other person. I call the other person, Oh, you have to call this other person, Rubianes said.

Major Orinda thoroughfare set to be closed until late tonight to remove downed tree, fix power lines

    - December 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

ORINDA -- A .7-mile stretch of Miner Road, between Camino Pablo and Camino Don Miguel, has been closed in both directions since about noon Wednesday due to a fallen tree that brought down power lines, according to Mark Nagel, Orinda's police chief.

PG&E and a tree removal company are on site working to clear the fallen tree and power lines, but the road is expected to remain closed until 11 p.m.

Nagel said the police department received a report of the large tree down at 11:50 a.m. and PG&E responded promptly, cutting off power through the affected lines to prevent fires.

"It's going to hit commute pretty hard," Nagel said. "We haven't had this much water and that kind of storm in a long time, I actually expected more. Fortuantley that's all we had," he said.

Stockton residents fearful after tree falls into home

    - December 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A Stockton family is cleaning up Thursday, just one day after a storm caused a large tree branch to fall into their home.

This incident has struck fear in neighbors who are worried about trees near their homes.

We could have gotten hurt really bad or we could have been killed, said Raymond Rubianes, who lives in the home crushed by the tree.

Rubianes said he is lucky to be alive after a huge oak tree branch crashed into the middle of his dining room. He and his wife were inside the home but were not hurt.

We were in the kitchen and decided not to eat at the kitchen table and eat in another room," Rubianes said. "We would have been sitting right there."

Rubianes said he had been concerned about the oak tree for years and had called the city to ask if he could get rid of the tree, but was told no.

Being (on) my property, I thought I could take it down, but a few years back, they wouldnt allow it because it's a historical tree, said Rubianes.

City officials said there are some requirements before cutting down certain trees in Stockton.

There are certain types of oaks that are referred to as heritage oaks, and if they're on private property, you would need to obtain a permit if you wanted to remove the tree, Stockton spokeswoman Connie Cochran said.

However, the city said it never received a permit application to cut down Rubianes' tree.

Stricken with Ebola, a family runs away from treatment and into the jungle

    - December 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly gave the age of Fatmata Kalma, who is 6 years old. This version has been corrected.

KOINADUGU, Sierra Leone His daughter had just been coaxed into an ambulance bound for the Ebola center. As Foday Kalma watched, his neighbors and relatives crowded around the vehicle, wailing that she was being driven to her death.

Kalma, 43, couldnt bear it. He had already lost his wife and mother-in-law to the disease. Suddenly, to his astonishment, 6-year-old Fatmata jumped out of the ambulance. She dashed to where he was standing with her two siblings. Thats when Kalma made a split-second decision that would rattle the regions medical establishment: He gathered his kids and bolted for the jungle.

Another family of possible Ebola carriers was on the run.

Six months after the worlds largest Ebola outbreak began, experts say one of their biggest challenges is persuading people to trust the medical system. Families still hide suspected Ebola victims or refuse to take them to health facilities. The problem exists in Liberia, but some foreign health officials say its even more daunting in Sierra Leone, where the transmission rate continues to climb even as it declines in the neighboring country.

In rural areas like Koinadugu, a district bordering Guinea, the problem is especially severe. There is no electricity or running water, let alone a modern hospital. Medicine usually means local herbs, generic malaria pills or the advice of a local healer. People whisper that disinfectant spreads the disease rather than kills it.

The influx of foreign health workers in moonsuits has terrified residents. Recently, a villager arrived at the districts Ebola isolation center and demanded that his daughter be taken away from the white people.

Another man with Ebola symptoms climbed a tree to escape a team that wanted to bring him in for treatment.

Hes going to starve out there, said John F. Koroma, one of the contact tracers who had been trying for nearly a week to bring him in.

Every day, teams of officials plunged into the jungle, searching for people exposed to Ebola who had fled medical treatment. Officially, 1,583 people have died from the disease in Sierra Leone since May. But authorities suspect entire families have perished in the wilderness, before Ebola tests were even taken. Kalma and his children could be next, officials feared.
