As temperatures across the country drop and the holiday season approaches, My Pest Pros, LLC reminds homeowners to take steps to prevent pests from dropping by uninvited. Rodents and cockroaches, the most common winter pests, love nothing more than to spend the chilly winter inside a cozy home, bringing with them health and property threats.
Most people associate cooler weather with relief from flying pests such as mosquitoes and wasps, but the winter brings on a different set of pest problems that are just as serious, said Brett Lieberman of My Pest Pros. Mice, rats and squirrels are most likely to cause problems in Northern Virginia, suburban Maryland and Washington, D.C. this time of year, so its important for homeowners to prevent these pests from entering their homes.
Our trained and licensed pest control professionals can help eliminate and prevent rodent and other pest problems for homeowners in Fairfax, across Northern Virginia and the DC Metro area, Lieberman said.
Aside from being nuisances, rodents and cockroaches are vectors of a wide array of diseases and can exacerbate asthma and allergy symptoms - effects only worsened by the increased time spent indoors during the winter. Rodents can also chew through drywall, insulation, wood and electrical wiring, increasing the potential risk for fires.
The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) offers the following tips for keeping homes pest-free this winter:
- Seal cracks and holes on the outside of your home to help prevent pests from getting inside. Be sure to check the areas where utilities and pipes enter the home. - - A mouse can fit through a hole the size of a dime. - Replace loose mortar and weather stripping around the basement foundation and windows. - Store firewood at least 20 feet from the home. Pests often take up residence in wood piles and can easily gain access to your home if the pile is nearby. - Rodents can hide in clutter, so keep storage areas well organized, and store boxes off of the floor. - Eliminate all moisture sites, including leaking pipes and clogged drains. Extra attention should be paid to kitchens and bathrooms as these areas are particularly vulnerable to cockroach infestations. - Install door sweeps and repair damaged screens in windows. - Screen vents to chimneys. Keep attics, basements and crawl spaces well ventilated and dry.
We encourage homeowners to remain vigilant throughout the winter for any signs of pest infestations and to regularly inspect for any possible points of entry throughout the home, added Lieberman.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga.
A worker at a Gwinnett County Shoneys restaurant sent Channel 2 Action news video showing roaches crawling around the kitchen of the establishment. Alvin Brooks, the employee, says he captured the problems from inside the kitchen using his cellphone. The restaurant says the problem is an isolated case. I dropped the chicken, I turned around, and Im like Whoa,' it could have gone in the barbecue sauce and no one would have noticed, Brooks said. The incident happened at the Shoneys at the Sugarloaf Mills mall in Lawrenceville. Brooks called the Gwinnett County Health Department earlier this week. Inspectors visited the restaurant Tuesday and found roaches at the location and ordered the restaurant to hire a pest control service by Wednesday, according to a department spokesperson. A spokesperson for Shoneys released a statement saying: The health and safety of our guests and team members is always our top priority. Upon learning of this situation, we immediately took action with our local health department, a pest control company and the mall to ensure that our brand new restaurant, with new equipment, is clean and free of any infestation. We received a health department score of 91. This was an isolated incident at our newest restaurant and we are working closely with the mall to determine the cause as this is not a stand-alone location. We will continue to constantly assess our procedures in order to provide our guests with an enjoyable dining experience. The Gwinnett County Health Department returned to the establishment on Wednesday. The restaurant fully complied with the Health Department's directive to receive pest control services. As a result of this follow-up inspection, the restaurant has been instructed to perform additional cleaning and to continue to monitor for pest. The complaint remains open and an inspection will be conducted in the near future to confirm that all corrective actions have been performed by the restaurant, said Jessica Anderson, a spokeswoman for the Gwinnett County Health Department. Brook says he reported the problem to the health department despite the possible repercussions. Im sure some kind of repercussion, but I was always told if you are doing right, you cant be wrong, Brooks said.
