The City of Karratha has found itself with surplus money, which it will use to fund 20 extra projects.

The City of Karratha has found itself with surplus money, which it will use to fund 20 extra projects.

The City recently conducted a biannual budget review and found a surplus of $1.6 million.

Projects to be funded include a graffiti blitz in Wickham and Roebourne, upgrades to the City's signs, CCTV and lighting at the Roebourne skate park and upgrades to buildings in Cossack.

The Cossack building upgrades include $165,000 to replace roofing and rafters at the bond store.

It includes replacement of roof bolts in the Jarman Room.

City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long said the funds allowed the City to expand existing programs, bring forward projects and pay debt.

"Over the past few years the council has been able to reallocate funds to important projects like road seals and footpaths, as well as paying down our debt level to a point where the City is now completely debt-free," he said.

"We are pleased to have brought forward a number of initiatives in Wickham and Roebourne as well as providing the final funding required to complete the Bulgarra Public Open Space project, which will commence early next year."

The Bulgarra Public Open Space project has been allocated an extra $300,000.

Marco Ramirez could not be more proud of his new shoeshine stand at Union Station.

It was specially built out of wood to echo the waiting room's Art Deco armchairs.

The brass footrests gleam. Ramirez beams. He stretches his arms wide.

With these four high-perched seats, he brings the art of the shoeshine back to the historic station for the first time in decades and expands his empire across the heart of downtown.

Thwap, thwap, thwap. He snaps his cloth across a businessman's black brogues as his own Salvatore Ferragamo loafers, bought used at a swap meet, glide and tap out a rhythm on the vintage tile.

He sees his work as performance art, as craft, even as a form of therapy. Sit for a while, rest, be pampered, leave with a bounce in your step.

His stand is at the west end of the long passageway through which more than 60,000 people travel daily to and from trains and buses.

As he tends to a steady stream of shoes and boots, he thanks those he credits with putting him in "the hub of Los Angeles."

"I'm really blessed that they chose me to run this operation," he says.

He thanks God. He thanks the leaders of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority. He thanks the people who manage the station.

Shoeshine man with bounce in his step gains a foothold at Union Station

A sprinkler system in a downtown Charleston apartment extinguished a kitchen fire Sunday. Officials say it is the second time in two weeks a fire at an apartment has been extinguised by a sprinkler.

A small kitchen fire was extinguished Sunday after it set off an apartment sprinkler system in North Charleston, according to officials.

Charleston and North Charleston Fire Departments responded just after 11:40 a.m. to the fire at North Central Apartments, 1054 King Street.

It was determined a single fire sprinkler head, located in the kitchen of the apartment, had extinguished a fire on the stove - which began after someone had a medical emergency while cooking. No injuries were reported and fire damage was limited to the stove area with minimal smoke and heat damage within the apartment.

Charleston Fire Department community educator Ryan Kunitzer said in a news release that this is the second time in two weeks that a sprinkler system has extinguished a "growing fire in a multi-tenant occupancy" in the City of Charleston.
