PENNSAUKEN TWP. Camden County officials, joined by crowds of residents, helped celebrate the inaugural opening of the new outdoor ice skating rink at Cooper River Park.
The 75-by-82-foot the Winterfest Ice Skating Rinkwill remain open throughout the holiday season, until Jan. 6.
"This is another great reason to visit one of Camden County's great parks. Bring your entire family to Cooper River Park for a new winter tradition," said Camden County Freeholder Jeff Nash, liaison to the county parks department. "This is a great opportunity to introduce kids to skating and who knows there might be some future figure skaters or hockey players out there."
After this weekend's opening events, the rink will remain open Monday through Friday, 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. On Saturdays and Sundays, the rink will be open from noon to 10 p.m.
Children 12 years of age and younger will be admitted onto the ice for free. There is a $4 admission fee for those 13 years and older, and a $3 skate rental fee. Parking is free.

LOCKPORT A 40-year-old Lockport man was arrested on two violations of Leandras Law, driving while intoxicated and other charges after he allegedly crashed into a tree on the front lawn of DeSales High School, 6914 Chestnut Ridge Road, at about 6:15 p.m. Friday.
Daniel T. Jones, who was injured but refused medical treatment, was arrested after Niagara County sheriffs deputies took his two uninjured children, ages 8 and 9, out of his car.
He was charged with two felony counts of Leandras Law for driving while intoxicated with young children, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, refusing to take a breath screening test, driving on the shoulder of the road, failing to keep right and operating an uninspected vehicle.
He was ordered to appear in Lockport Town Court at 9 a.m. Thursday.

As former Bronco Brandon McManus learned, few remember the made field goals, but they'll always remember the misses. (Tim Rasmussen, The Denver Post)
The Drive II: Mile High Boogaloo. The Sequel. The Chiefs Beef. The Kansas City Cold Shoulder.
The Broncos live and die by the field goal against their real rival, Kansas City. Ask John Elway.
"It ranks right up there with the Drive, especially coming against a good team like Kansas City," Elway said. "In that situation, the way I look at it, you have nothing to lose."
Elway was talking after the Broncos' 24-23 victory over the Chiefs on Sept. 17, 1990 at Mile High Stadium. Facing a fourth-and-10 from his own 17 with 1:11 remaining, Elway hit Vance Johnson for a 49-yard pass. And yadda yadda. ... David Treadwell nailed a 22-yard field goal with time ticking away as the Broncos beat the Chiefs 24-23.
Treadwell was nails. He won it. It was the most memorable play of the game for a big win in the Denver-KC rivalry.
(OK, OK, maybe it wasn't THE most memorable play; this might be the play most fans remember from that game, at least the sound of it):
Anyway, the point is: Field goals matter. Even if we don't remember them.
When the Broncos signed former Chiefs kicker Connor Barth on Tuesday to replace Brandon McManus, who replaced Matt Prater, they put their fate in the foot of a 28-yard old former Tar Heel who at one point looked more like an '80s Dutch soccer player then a future NFLer.
Of course, we don't remember Treadwell's game-winning boot from 1990 that won the game. We remember Steve Atwater's brick wall. But if Treadwell missed that kick, well, we'd remember that.

Southview Design won a silver COTY (Contractor of the Year) award for Residential Exterior Specialty by the Minnesota Chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI).
Contractors from all across the country compete for the prestigious COTY awards. Winners are selected by an impartial panel of experts in the remodeling industry who review photographs and narratives describing the projects functionality, aesthetics, craftsmanship, innovation and degree of difficulty in solving the design problem. NARI members represent an elite group of approximately 800,000 companies and individuals in the remodeling industry.
Southview Designs winning project is a backyard in Wayzata, Minn. which has already won three other awards this year: a Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association award for Excellence in Landscape Design, a silver award for Outdoor Living from Professional Remodeler magazine, and a National Landscape Award of Excellence from PLANET (Professional Landcare Network).
Southview Design transformed an overgrown, unkempt and largely unusable backyard into an award-winning backyard that was the backdrop for the wedding of the familys oldest son.
My goal was to overcome the many major site issues to create a beautiful and functional recreational area, said Southview landscape designer Colleen Moran. Moran explained that when they removed the old pool deck, they unearthed two timber retaining walls and 13 footings. We suspected we were building on top of an old barn, she said. The ground under the pool deck had settled, revealing large sinkholes. When they excavated the old tennis court, they found that gas and high voltage lines had not been buried at the right depth.
Southview Design rebuilt the retaining walls one section at a time to stabilize the soil surrounding the pool. The design also included overhauling the pool, putting in a new sport court and installing a kitchen as well as a cabana complete with fireplace and AV equipment. They also created a private patio area under the deck next to the home and connected to the pool area.
Taking the existing homes architecture into careful consideration, Southview Design used the same roof shingles on the new kitchen and pergola; copper used on the cabana chimney mimics copper on the windows on the home. Colors found in the natural stone used in the kitchen, the cabana fireplace and the deck posts match the homes two indoor fireplaces.

Clare CURRAN
Dunedin South MP
21 November 2014 MEDIA RELEASE Public outcry urged against destruction of Saddle Hill
It appears that only a public outcry against the inevitable destruction of Jaffrays Hill, the lower hump of Saddle Hill, will save our iconic landscape, Dunedin South MP Clare Curran said today.
Yesterdays High Court decision overturning the Environment Courts declaration that there was no consent to quarry the hill has left Saddle Hill vulnerable to destruction.
That this issue has dragged on for so long is a travesty and demonstrates the inability of law and good sense to prevent the destruction of such an important landmark.
The High Court appears to have left a slight glimmer of hope in asking that the parties now attempt to reach consensus on the way forward. While that it most unlikely, it perhaps means that the Dunedin City Council can return to the High Court to argue that consensus is impossible due to the fundamental differences between the desire of the landowner to quarry Saddle Hill and the communitys desire to keep an iconic landmark of historical significance intact.
Despite an interim injunction being in place preventing the quarry business from digging along the ridge line further endangering the shape of the hill, diggers have been consistently observed and filmed along the ridgeline.
I have organised a community meeting on Saturday 13 December to discuss this and the ongoing issues of heavy traffic movements along the Saddle Hill roads due to the quarrying which has long affected the community.
I have also written to the Environment Minister Nick Smith advising him of the implications of this decision and asking for his intervention, Clare Curran said.
