FORT LEE - With the Dec. 9 bond referendum to expand district space drawing closer, school and municipal officials made one of their final pitches to residents at a community forum on Nov. 19, urging them to "Vote Schools, Vote Kids."

The $49.8 million plan calls for a ten-room addition to School No. 2 for Pre-K and special needs students, the relocation of the district's fifth- and sixth-graders into a new 33-classroom wing at the middle school and upgrades to the high school track and field area.

    most efficient,' he said.

If approved, the expansions will end an overcrowding strain that has forced art, music and other classes into libraries and hallways and students at School No. 2 into trailers and provide enough space for the 400 students expected to enroll in the school system in the next five years.

The district has absorbed the addition of 350 students over the past five years with no new construction.

Mayor Mark Sokolich was also present during the Nov. 19 community forum to speak on the school referendum.

"This, of all the plans, is not only the most creative but is financially and fiscally responsible and the most efficient," said interim Superintendent Paul Saxton, noting that the reconfigured middle school will allow students to better identify with each other and create a school culture.

Hunua Ranges Pest Management Area to make a difference

    - November 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    27 November 2014

Hunua Ranges Pest Management Area to make significant difference, says Auckland Council

The creation of a new pest management area in the Hunua Ranges will provide a sensible, holistic approach to the care and control of one of Aucklands most important ecological areas, according to Auckland Council.

A successful collaboration between the Auckland and Waikato regional councils has led to the creation of the Hunua Ranges Pest Management Area, which will unify the work being done to manage the area.

Comprising the Hunua Ranges regional parks (including Whakatiwai and Waharau) and an adjoining buffer area, a consistent pest management programme in the Waikato Regional Pest Management Plan (RPMP) will now be implemented under the management of Auckland Council.

Auckland Council Environment, Climate Change and Natural Heritage Committee Chairperson Councillor Wayne Walker says that the agreement is an important step towards improving care of the ranges.

We are pleased that we have been able to work with Waikato Regional Council to enhance our commitment to caring for this incredibly important ecological and water catchment area, he says.

This joined-up approach will mean that the residents of the area and the wider Auckland population can be assured that there is a comprehensive and efficient pest management plan in place.

It will safeguard the future of the ranges from several invasive pests, including provisions to combat kauri dieback, better manage the feral pigs and goats that roam the ranges, through control and permitted hunting, and prevent feral deer establishing there.

This will make a significant difference to the management of the area, and make pest management in the area more transparent and efficient, he says.

Soldier surprised with wife 150 pounds lighter

    - November 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - An Army wife who lost over 100 pounds while her husband was away in Afghanistan surprisedthe soldier Wednesday when he arrived at Wilmington International Airport.

Misty Shaffer, who once weighed over 300 pounds, hasn't seen her husband in over a year. She hid her new look.

"I just kept pictures off Facebook, off the internet," Misty said. "When I did send him pictures, they were from the shoulder up."

Misty's new look wasn't the only surprise waiting for Specialist Larry Shaffer when he stepped off the plane. Their three year old daughter, Nevaeh, would look a lot bigger after a year. And the biggie---a new house.

"He's been wanting to buy a house now forever and I went and did it while he was gone," Misty said.

    Then the surprise!

Shaffer was first greeted by his mom, BarbaraSuerken, who broke down in tears when she spotted her son coming through the terminal.

"It's been hard, but we got through it," Suerken said.

As Shaffer turned the corner to head in the direction of baggage claim, a throng of family and friends yelled 'surprise!' Then the crowd parted to let Misty through for the big reveal.

"Wow," Shaffer said after seeing his wife. "This is icing on the cakebecause I've been happy with the way she's looked since day one but it's something she wanted to do and she reached her goal," Shaffer said.
