Demolition continues at the city of Chattanooga's former Harriet Tubman housing complex in East Chattanooga.
Residents who live near the Harriet Tubman demolition can breathe easy, city officials say.
The demolition crews are meeting safe air quality standards and no asbestos contaminants are escaping, said City Councilman Moses Freeman.
Freeman spoke after Assistant City Engineer Dennis Malone gave a report at Tuesday's City Council committee meeting stating that the demolition company, Environmental Abatement, cannot demolish a building until all asbestos is removed from it.
Environmental Abatement is the company responsible for tearing down the 440-unit Harriet Tubman, once the second-largest public housing site in the city.
Freeman called for Tuesday's information meeting at City Council after several East Chattanooga residents raised concerns about the Tubman demolition releasing asbestos into the air.
Malone reported that 63 buildings on the site have had asbestos abatement.
Workers demolished more than 50 percent of 72 buildings. Other buildings will be abated before demolition. Malone expects demolition to be completed by January. Then workers will separate materials, he said.
So dust from the teardown carries no asbestos, Freeman said.
Malone also gave Freeman a typed report of the asbestos abatement process.

25 November 2014 The Israeli Governments use of house demolition as a punitive measure in response to alleged acts of violence by Palestinians must end immediately, two United Nations experts urged today, adding that the practice which targets Palestinian homes in both Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory is a violation of human rights law.
All acts of violence require a firm response from the Israeli authorities, and those responsible should be tried before a court of law and sentenced for their crimes, Makarim Wibisono, the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories, affirmed in a press release, adding, however, that the State cannot go beyond what is sanctioned by international law.
Mr. Wibisonos remarks follow the 19 November demolition of the East Jerusalem home of Abd al-Rahman al-Shaludi, the Palestinian man accused of committing last months car attack in Jerusalem that claimed the lives of a 22 year-old woman and a three-month old child.
In addition to Mr. Al-Shaludis home, Israeli authorities have slated at least six other homes of Palestinian suspects located in East Jerusalem, Askar refugee camp, and Hebron, for demolition or sealing the practice of completely or partially closing off the rooms of a home with concrete or metal sheeting, prohibiting family members from accessing their homes, at times indefinitely. Meanwhile, following a recent deadly attack against a Jerusalem synagogue, a number of other house demolitions are reportedly being prepared.
In the case of Mr. Al-Shaludi, who was shot and killed by Israeli police at the scene of the attack, the demolition of his home in the middle of the night served no other purpose than to punish his innocent parents and five siblings, rendering them homeless, Leilani Farha, the Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing, explained.
Simply put: the use of house demolition as a punitive measure is a form of collective punishment contrary to international law, she continued. Israel must immediately end its use of this devastating practice.
The recent house demolitions come within a context of increasing tensions marked by a number of fatal incidents between Palestinians and Israelis.
However, the two Special Rapporteurs warned that an upsurge in demolitions would only add to the frustration and despair felt by the people living under prolonged military occupation, and sow the seeds of more hatred and violence for the future.
The only means to stop this cycle of violence is for Israel to place human rights at the centre of its policy-making, Mr. Wibisono concluded.

LIGA ng mga Barangay president Noli Villarosa said on Monday that no demolition will be effected on the houses of some residents of Purok Villa Esperanza in Barangay Tangub, Bacolod City.
The clarification came after residents supposedly received reports that their houses will be demolished upon the orders of Villarosa.
Berlita Ante, spokesperson of urban poor group Kadamay-Negros, said residents then went to the Barangay Hall of Tangub to see Villarosa.
Villarosa confirmed to them that he has not directed any person to conduct a demolition.
I have no authority to order the demolition since the lot where the residents reside is not mine nor owned by the barangay. The lot is owned by Department of Education, he said.
Villarosa, however, said there were residents summoned by the barangay because there was a complaint filed before his office by a resident about the presence of a pigpen and the complainant want it demolished.
He said about 20 people belonging to Tumandok Association-Kadamay Negros in Purok Villa Esperanza went to the Barangay Hall to dialogue with him.
Villarosa said he only met with Rogelio Parar, president of Tumandok, inside his office and told him that there was nothing to discuss about the demolition.
The group, however, has already filed a complaint against him before the City Council.
So what is the purpose of talking to them? The lot at Purok Villa Esperanza is a public land owned by the government, and I also represent the government but they have not asked my permission to build their houses. Then they filed a complaint against me and now they want a dialogue? Villarosa said.
