(RTTNews.com) - Beacon Roofing Supply, Inc. ( BECN ) said its fourth-quarter net income slid to $24.2 million from last year's $27.4 million, with income per share falling to $0.48 from $0.55 a year ago, mainly due to lower gross margins from reduced selling prices as a result of a soft demand environment, and a continued unfavorable shift in sales mix to lower margin direct shipment and commercial business.
However, total sales for the quarter increased 6.3% to $726.5 million from $683.6 million in 2013. On an overall consolidated basis, residential roofing product sales increased 5.1%, non-residential roofing product sales increased 4.9%, and complementary product sales increased 14.5% year-over-year.
Paul Isabella, the Company's President and Chief Executive Officer, stated: "Again this quarter we were able to demonstrate our focus on driving top line revenue growth with a 6.3% increase in sales. Almost two thirds of that growth was due to the success of our 26 new greenfields that we opened in the current year. In addition, we completed three acquisitions in August and October that, for next year, will add over $88 million to our revenue base. We continue to experience pressure on our gross margins which are down slightly from last quarter and from last year. The soft residential market, coupled with heightened competition, has continued to put pressure on our market pricing. We continue to invest heavily to grow the business through the opening of the new greenfield branches."

The problem for Toronto and the rest of the AL East is that the Red Sox aren't done. The additions of Sandoval and Ramirez provide a lot more depth for the organization and set up the possibility of future trades for starting pitching. There's no guarantee it will work out, but there's little doubt that Boston looks a lot better today than it did a month ago on the heels of a last-place finish in the division.
On MLB Tonight, Alex Anthopoulos joins the show to discuss the Blue Jays' signing of Russell Martin and gives an outlook for the 2015 season
The signings will have a ripple effect throughout baseball both in terms of free agency and trades. Here's a closer look at what it could mean for the Blue Jays in particular:
Sandoval off the market: The Blue Jays expressed some interest in Sandoval earlier in the offseason, but there were never any real expectations that the two sides would be able to work out a deal. Toronto made it pretty clear that Martin had been its top target through free agency and everything else was put on the back burner until that agreement was finalized. General manager Alex Anthopoulos did meet with Sandoval's representatives at the recent General Managers Meetings, but it appears the Blue Jays' interest was overblown.
Toronto isn't believed to have made a formal proposal to Sandoval and when the 2012 World Series MVP sat down to make his decision, he was weighing offers from the Padres, Giants and Red Sox. In that sense, the Sandoval and Ramirez signings with Boston don't directly impact Toronto because the organization didn't take a strong run at either player. The Blue Jays still have a need for either a third baseman or second baseman and now that the top players are off the board, it might create some movement in the second tier of infielders that Toronto might consider.
Yankees pressed into action: New York has been insisting for the past several weeks that it would resist the urge to make a major splash in free agency. The question now is whether that stance will change after arch-rival Boston added a pair of prominent players to its roster. Reacting to another team's moves isn't always the best course of action but, when it comes to these two cities, nothing can be ruled out.
If the Yankees feel compelled to respond with a major move of their own, all bets are off this winter. New York could use an upgrade to its starting rotation and with Max Scherzer, Jon Lester and James Shields available through free agency, the only thing required to get a deal done is money. If the Yankees go on a spending spree of their own, then the task obviously gets even tougher for Toronto.
Rays could continue to sell: The more competitive the AL East becomes the more likely it is that the Rays will decide to completely rebuild. That process is already partially underway following the departure of general manager Andrew Friedman and manager Joe Maddon, but more moves could be in store for an organization that has plenty of young talent but could be a couple of years away from contending.
The one name Toronto should watch out for is Ben Zobrist, who is about to enter the final year of his contract. Zobrist would be an ideal fit for the Blue Jays at second base, but even if Tampa Bay declines to deal him within the division, at the very least it further dilutes the market for middle infielders. If Zobrist goes on the block, it could also impact the market for free agents like Asdrubal Cabrera and Jed Lowrie and second basemen like Howie Kendrick and Chase Utley, who could be available through trades.

Construction on a $2-million office and apartment building on Upper Ottawa Street is expected to begin in the spring. The first occupant will be Dr. Julius Losonci, who is moving his Eastmount Family Dentistry office from its current location at 1221 Limeridge Rd. East. The 10,000-square-foot building, located at 788 Upper Ottawa is being developed by Losoncis wife, Zahra Arabkaramy. Its going to be a very high-end building, Arabkaramy said, noting there will be eight luxury residential apartment units. Everything is going to be beautiful. The dental office will be about 3,000 sq. ft. Arabkaramy said she is in talks with another healthcare provider to occupy the other ground floor unit. Construction should begin in March and be completed in the fall. Arabkaramy bought the property in 2011 and received the required zoning change in 2012. A building permit was issued last month. Ward 6 councillor Tom Jackson said while he doesnt always see infill developments as a panacea to housing needs in the city because it doesnt always fit in with character of the neighbourhood, this development seems like a good fit. He said hes been assured there will be an adequate buffer between the development and the homes behind it on Winchester Boulevard behind it. Plus, the owners are occupying the building. I think thats incredibly important, Jackson said.

Its another round of office-space musical chairs among Amherst office tenants.
Architecture and engineering firm Wendel Companies is expanding and moving its headquarters office to Ciminelli Real Estate Corp.s Centerpoint Corporate Park, gaining more space but leaving behind an empty two-story building on John James Audubon Parkway.
Wendel Companies, with seven offices around the country, will occupy 37,000 square feet on the second floor of 375 Essjay Road, the largest building at the Centerpoint complex, with 75,461 square feet of space on two floors. Thats 10,000 square feet more than what Wendel currently has at 140 John James Audubon, where it shares a long, two-story building with Columbus McKinnon Corp.
Meanwhile, the Essjay building currently houses operations and employees of Independent Health Association, which in turn is vacating the entire building after acquiring another one nearby from Ciminelli. Wendel will take up half of 375 Essjay, while the entire first floor will become available for lease, as of Nov. 1, at $22.50 per square foot, according to a real estate listing on CityFeet.com.
Our focus during this process was on productivity and sustainability, said Stewart Haney, president and CEO of Wendel, in a news release. We decided that keeping an Amherst address would best accommodate the majority of our employees and provide access to transportation to support clients in Western New York and across the U.S.
Wendel, which employs more than 200 people in all, will take occupancy of its new corporate headquarters space in April 2015 under a long-term lease.
The firm now has about 145 employees at the Audubon building but is getting cramped as it grows and adds more staff, prompting the move. Plans also call for moving its architecture group to its downtown Buffalo office at the Electric Tower, which it also plans to maintain and expand.
The biggest driver was growth, our need for additional space to grow into in the next five to 10 years, Haney said in an interview. Our intent is to grow in all our offices if we can.
Additionally, he said, the firm decided it wanted to re-use an existing building, not construct a new one.
We thought it best to find something already in Amhersts inventory, and this building works perfectly, he said. He noted the presence of a Wegmans supermarket, nearby restaurants and other services as appealing.
