CLEAR UP THEN CLEAN UP.Mandaue City Atty. Francisco Guillina cleans himself up after receiving the brunt of the anger from residents of Sitio Mahayag during a clearing operation on the Mandaue side of the Mahiga Creek. (SUN.STAR FOTO/ALAN TANGCAWAN)
TENSION rose again yesterday in Sitio Mahayag, Barangay Subangdaku, Mandaue City when a demolition team arrived to tear down makeshift dwellings along the bank of Mahiga Creek.
A resident allegedly threw plastic bag containing foul liquid at the members of the demolition team and police officers. But no one was reported injured.
The demolition team arrived past 1 a.m. with personnel from the Special Weapons and Tactics, Subangdaku Police Station, Bureau of Fire Protection and paramedics.
SFO4 Teresito Mata said that some residents protested at first, raising their voices at members of the demolition team, but later agreed to take their belonging to the two city vehicles.
Temporary
The vehicles brought the residents and their belongings to the 6.5-hectare relocation site in Barangay Paknaan where the City has set up bunkhouses as temporary shelters.
The demolition team left the area at 3 p.m.
Last Nov. 13, clashes between residents and members of the demolition team also marred efforts to clear the riverbank of makeshift dwellings.

On Nov. 15, Marine Sgt. Robert Bruce, a Mesa resident, received a rather large, early Christmas present: a newly built, custom-designed house donated by Homes for Our Troops.
Bruce lost both legs to an improvised explosive device while attempting to rescue a fellow Marine. He walks with the aid of prosthetic limbs, but uses a wheelchair as well. The new home is equipped especially for his convenience, with accessible features including a remote-controlled front door.
We at Homes for Our Troops do not believe giving a home to a severely injured veteran is charity, said Tim McHale, president of Homes for Our Troops, in a statement. We believe it is a moral obligation of our society. They fought to protect our freedom and independence, and we are now giving them back some freedom and independence by building them a specially adapted home.
The house was built by Arizona-based Taylor Morrison Home Builders, with the help of many other local companies who donated time, effort and supplies toward construction of the home in northeast Mesa.
Sen. Jeff Flake spoke, thanking Bruce for his service and congratulating him on his new home. Flake recounted a recent diplomatic mission to Cuba and related his experiences there to his appreciation for the sergeant and others like him.
Every time you touch down in Miami you have a little more gratitude, a lot more gratitude and a better sense of what it means to be in a free country, Flake said. And we owe that freedom to people like Sgt. Bruce.
A representative of U.S. Rep. Matt Salmon presented Bruce with an ensign which had been flown over the U.S. Capitol on his behalf.
Bruce and his wife Megan lived in an apartment previously, and he noted they will certainly be glad for the room as well as the amenities of the new house.
I look forward to getting into it and hosting barbecues for family and friends not having to crawl around on the carpet on hands and knees because theres not room to roll a wheelchair, Bruce said. Now Ive got lots of room.
A friend of Bruces, a Navy corpsman who served in Afghanistan with him, presented Bruce with a memento of his time spent overseas. A simple gift, it consisted of no more than the body armor plates Bruce was wearing at the time he was injured and which saved his life. The sight of the plates had a moving effect on the sergeant.

The City of Caon City received kudos from a local home builder for approving a new ordinance designed to jump start the local business industry.
The Caon City Council on Monday approved on first reading the ordinance that will create a temporary incentive program intended to stimulate prompt economic development and construction of new residential, commercial and industrial buildings in the city.
City Attorney John Havens said the incentives will become effective immediately following adoption at the Oct. 20 meeting. The incentives include:
Waiver of a tap fee for new buildings constructed following the adoption of the ordinance and receive a certificate of occupancy no later than Nov. 30, 2016. A tap fee costs $5,000.
Deferment of building permit fees and use taxes payable to the city at the time building permits are issued with a full waiver of those fees and costs if the structures receive a certificate of occupancy by Nov. 30, 2016. Building permit fees and use tax vary depending on the valuation of the structure.
"It gives builders and property owners in the city a chance to make some rather significant savings with respect to their projects provided they start promptly and finish ahead of the deadline," Havens said.
Local resident Bob Leck, representing Create Caon City, the Fremont County Homebuilders Association and Leck Construction, said the ordinance is "extremely progressive thinking."

BYU MOA exhibits shifts from cinema to natural phenomena

Brigham Young University Museum of Art
PROVO Hollywoods time in Provo is coming to an end. BYUs Museum of Art exhibit, CUT: Costume and the Cinema, featuring pieces worn by Johnny Depp, Kate Winslet and Amy Adams amongst many others will be ending Dec. 6.
While one exhibit leaves though, a new installation just arrives, Plexus No. 29, by artist Gabriel Dawe that provides a tangible perspective on light.
A range of characters greet visitors upon first arrival into the exhibition room, from Captain Jack Sparrow to John Smith to Christine Daa. Photos are prohibited though unfortunately, for museum goers and paparazzi.
While vibrant colors and versatile fabric provide eye candy for viewers, the mechanics behind costuming is also vital to understand. How a costume fits a particular individual's body, as well as the various underpinnings of a garment are equally important in accurately portraying the clothing and setting on camera.
The correct underwear is essential to give the proper look: once strapped into corsetry and other curious underpinnings an actor will assume the appropriate deportment of the period, reads the Museum of Art introductory placard.
Each piece is specifically tailored not only to the actors body, but develops almost a distinct personality itself as well.

Mysuru is set to undergo a major facelift, with some of its historical structures and tourist attractions set to undergo renovation, at a cost of about Rs 45 crore.
Installation of a statue of the last Maharaja of Mysuru, Jayachamaraja Wadiyar and renovation of Mysurus two landmark buildings, Lansdowne Buildings and Devaraja Market, are likely to be taken up soon.
Another project awaiting clearance for execution is the widening of the Irwin Road that connects the City Railway Station at a cost of Rs 24 crore.
The statue of Jayachamaraja Wadiyar will be installed at the Hardinge Circle for Rs 5 crore where stands an inoperative fountain. This will be in line with the two other statues of the Maharajas of Mysuru, Chamaraja Wadiyar and Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV, at the busy Chamaraja Statue Circle and K R Circle respectively on the same road.
The Lansdowne Building, collapse of the ceiling of which on August 25, 2012 had resulted in the death of four persons in a rented shop of the Mysuru Municipal Corporation. It will be restored for Rs 6 crore. The Devaraja Market, Mysurus premier shopping centre in a heritage building in the heart of the city, will be renovated for Rs 10 crore.
Both buildings are in a dilapidated state. Though the Devaraja Market continues to be a busy market area, the Lansdowne Building remains neglected after the tragedy, its shop-keepers temporarily accommodated in makeshift stalls opposite the famous structure.
Informing this at the district development review meeting today, officials said tender process had been initiated for the restoration of the century-old Lansdowne Buildings and installation of the statue of the late Maharaja. Works would be taken up soon on these three projects.
The installation of the statue has been approved by the state government and has been included in the budget.
Deputy Commissioner C Shikha said, clearance from the government was awaited for widening the Irwin Road proposed at a cost of Rs 24 crore Rs 14 crore for land acquisition and the rest for asphalting.
District incharge Minister V Sreenivasa Prasad asked the officials concerned to speed up the construction of the Maharanis Commerce College and hostel in Vinayakanagar in the city and also explore the possibility of setting up an extension centre of the Maharanis Science College in the erstwhile Taluk Office premises on Hunsur Road.
