The Aquanta smart water-heater controller promises to slash your energy bill

    - November 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A truly smart home should not only make your life easier, it should also save you money. And while theres no shortage of smart thermostats, lighting controls, door locks, and even smart irrigation systems, few solutions focus on the activity that consumes the second-highest amount of energy in the home: heating water.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports that heating water accounts for 17.7 percent of a typical homes energy consumption (space heating consumes 41.5 percent). Thats because a traditional electric, gas, or propane water heater keeps 30, 40, or more gallons of water hot in a tank all the time. Every time the water heaters thermostat detects a drop in the water temperature below a preset threshold, it fires up its heating element and reheats the water, even though on most days you need hot water only in the mornings and evenings.

One of the best ways to reduce the energy your home uses to heat water is to install an on-demand heater that fires up only when you need hot water. I have one in my house and its fabulous. But these so-called tankless water heaters can be very expensive, especially if you need to hire a pro to install one in place of a conventional water heater (theres both plumbing and electrical work to be done).

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, heating water consumes the second-highest amount of energy in the typical home.

Sunnovations, a company with a background designing and manufacturing solar water-heater monitors, has a better idea: The Aquanta Smart Water Heater Controller. Cool technology for hot water, as the company describes it. We aim to bring this dumb appliance into the connected-home ecosystem, Sunnovations CEO Matt Carlson told me in an interview several weeks ago. The company has launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring its new product to market.

The Aquanta is a box that sits on top of your water heater and is connected to a probe (an enthalpy sensor, to be technical) that dangles inside the tank. The sensor feeds through a fitting that attaches to your water heaters T&P (temperature and pressure) relief valve and measures both the energy going into your tank and the energy consumed as you use hot water. The box connects through your Wi-Fi router to the cloud, which you link to with an app on your smartphone (it could also be integrated into your existing smart-home network).

By heating water only when you need it, it shouldn't take long for you to recoup your investment in an Aquanta water-heater controller.

Having a very finely grained view of your households hot-water usage patterns enables you to cycle the heating element, Carlson said. The Aquanta can learn your hot-water usage patterns, much like the Nest Learning Thermostat monitors your heating and air-conditioning use, and can suggest a water-heating schedule. You can also establish your own schedule for turning the water heater on when its needed and off when you dont expect to be home. Finally, you can turn the heater on and off manually, using the smartphone app. The box can send you text messages when it determines you havent used hot water for a while.

In addition to its energy-savings features, the Aquanta can also alert you to water leaks. A leaking water heater can do tremendous damage because your water heater is usually out of sight, and a leak can go undetected for days or weeks. Sunnovations product roadmap includes the development of a networked valve that can shut off the water supply to the heater in the event of a leak.

The Aquanta app will help you program the controller, remind you about maintenance chores, and alert you to problems such as water leaks.

Collins, NBA's 1st openly gay player, retires

    - November 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

By MELISSA MURPHY AP Sports Writer

NEW YORK (AP) - Jason Collins, the first openly gay player in one of the four major North American professional leagues, announced his retirement Wednesday after 13 years in the NBA.

"It's time and I'm very much looking forward to the next steps," Collins said during a press conference Wednesday before the Brooklyn Nets played the Milwaukee Bucks.

The 35-year-old Collins disclosed his plans earlier in a first-person story for Sports Illustrated. It's the same forum he used in April, 2013, to publicly reveal his sexuality. He was signed by the Nets in February and played 22 games for the team.

Collins said he decided to retire over the summer and had been trying to determine how to make the announcement. He chose Wednesday because he was going to be in New York on business and attending the game to watch his former teammate and coach, Jason Kidd, coach the Bucks.

"After last season, especially over the summer, my body was talking to me like it does to all professional athletes after a certain while," Collins said. "It's a young man's game and Father Time is undefeated. Got another one."

Collins started his career with the New Jersey Nets in 2001 and rejoined the franchise in Brooklyn last February. He revealed at the end of the 2013 season that he is gay, but was a free agent and remained unsigned until the Nets needed another big man.

They turned to the 7-foot Collins, who helped them reach the NBA Finals in 2002 and 2003. He signed a 10-day contract, playing his first game as an out gay man on Feb. 23 on the road against the Los Angeles Lakers to a warm ovation. He stayed the rest of the season.

Nets general manager Billy King congratulated Collins on a "distinguished NBA career" in a statement.

"He was an integral part of the back-to-back Eastern Conference Championship teams," King said. "We wish him well as he embarks on a new chapter in his career."

Tree removal continues on E 41st Street in Savannah

    - November 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A Savannah neighborhood did it's best to keep a part of their community intact, but Wednesday was D-Day for a centuries old Oak.

The Victory Heights Community off of Skidaway Road rallied around their leafy friend until the end.

It took workers two days to take down what took three lifetimes to grow up, and like family, when you live with something all your life, it's difficult to let go.

"My dad grew up here, and showed me how to climb it," Terry Moore remembered.

Moore grew up here too, in the house his grandfather built.

"When this subdivision was originally built, it was just the tree and granddaddy's house and five others, and the rest was pasture," he said.

But in early October, the City of Savannah said the tree had to come down; the neighborhood association president got a second opinion from another arborist from the University of Georgia.

"We didn't like the big orange x, and I do like second opinions, so that arborist gave us a tree analysis and really good explanation on the health of the tree," said Felix Maher, Victory Heights Neighborhood Association President.

So with two arborists saying the tree was just too unhealthy, it became a safety issue, and since the tree was actually growing in the right of way, which is city property, it was a liability.

Porcelain or ceramic tile — which is for you?

    - November 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Provided by Networx.com

Do you think that porcelain and ceramic tile are essentially the same? Well, you may be surprised to find that they are not. Although both are manufactured of similar ingredients using similar processes, there are some important differences. Familiarize yourself with the characteristics of each of these tile types so that you can choose the kind that offers the right price, durability, and good looks for your tiling project.

    What is the difference?

The difference is in the details. Ceramic tile is manufactured from red or white clay mixed with water and minerals, then baked in a type of kiln. It is nearly always finished with a glaze to reduce its natural porosity. Porcelain tile is made from light-colored clays with a fine grain (this gives it a dense body), quartz, feldspar, and a minimal amount of water, is pressed or extruded before being fired at substantially higher temperatures than regular ceramic. It is sold in both glazed and unglazed versions. The Porcelain Tile Certification Agency (PTCA) will certify tile as true porcelain if it passes their rigorous testing.

    Advantages of Porcelain Tile

+ Beauty + Long life + Crack and stain resistance + Durability -- perfect for any use, from decorative wall tiles to rugged heavy-traffic flooring + High Porcelain Enamel Institute (PEI) ratings for hardness and durability + Low water absorption (less than 0.5 percent) + Usability for outdoor features + Frost resistance + Superior strength that allows it to be formed into a huge range of sizes + Ability to be rectified -- that is, cut precisely to size so that all tiles are uniform and grout lines are minimized

    Disadvantages of Porcelain Tile

    - Cost of porcelain tile - Necessity for professional installation due to its brittleness, which requires special tools and cutting methods to work with - Heavy weight, making it more difficult to transport - Sealing required for polished porcelain tile

    Advantages of Ceramic Tile

+ Cost of ceramic tile, which is considerably less expensive than porcelain tile + Easy cutting and installation + Light weight
