Bitter Winds Blamed For Fire That Spread To Multiple Buildings In Cliffside, N.J.

    - November 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

CLIFFSIDE PARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) A fire broke out late Tuesday in a multi-story apartment building that was under construction in Cliffside Park, New Jersey, and spread to other buildings.

The fire broke out around 5:45 p.m. in the building at Walker Street and Cliff Lane, fire officials told CBS2.

Witnesses watched as windows flew off the building.

I was in my house and I heard two explosions. I jumped and looked out the window and I saw this building behind us engulfed in flames, Rick Ferrer told CBS2s Hazel Sanchez.

Nearby residents said explosions could be felt blocks away.

We just heard a big bang and shook kind of the whole house, Justin Martone said.

Strong winds fueled the flames which could be seen several miles out. Burning debris flew to neighboring apartment buildings, forcing several families to be evacuated.

Ive never in my life seen flames spread so fast, one witness said.

Multiple fire departments from the surrounding area, including the North Hudson Fire Department, were dispatched to the scene.

Fire officials said the gusting winds late Tuesday caused flying embers to spread the fire.

Senior housing complex proposed in Fairfield

    - November 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A New York developer has proposed a three-story senior housing complex on Patterson Drive, with a public hearing on the matter scheduled for Nov. 24.

The proposed complex, by Clover Construction Management of Buffalo, N.Y., calls for a 119-unit senior apartment building with a density of 21 units per acre, with one- and two-bedroom units, according to city documentation. The site is on 6.5 acres of land on the north side of Patterson, near the Planet Fitness.

This complex follows an earlier project that was abandoned, said Tim Bachman, the director of development for the city. A concept plan had been approved in 2010, but that project fell through because the prior developer was unable to obtain federal tax credits for the $18 million project. Clover Construction, however, is working entirely with private funding, he said.

A representative of Clover Construction did not return repeated calls seeking comment. Neyer Properties, which owns the land, is in the process of transferring it to Clover Construction, said Jeff Chamot, a land development manager with Neyer.

The project is in very early stages and has not gone through planning commission yet, said Councilman Bill Woeste, who is also a member of the commission. The purpose of the hearing, held jointly between council and the planning commission, is to solicit resident input for the housing project. The project would then be reviewed by the planning commission, then by city council.

The public hearing will be at 7 p.m. Nov. 24 at the city building, 5350 Pleasant Ave.

Carports Melbourne Confirms That A New Carport Addition Will Increase A Homes Value

    - November 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia (PRWEB) November 18, 2014

An increasing number of Melbournians are swapping expensive residential renovations for a single, strategic addition to their homes: the installation of a carport.

These attractive, affordable structures are said to escalate a homes value while providing additional protection from environmental damage, making carports an increasingly common site in the greater Melbourne area.

The benefits of a new carport go way beyond what most people think of, said Chris Taylor, owner of Carports Melbourne, a company that provides affordable carport installations in Melbourne. Its not just about making your home look better or increasing its value. Carports help protect your residence, your family, and your vehicle from the elements.

By offering cover from rain, hail, sun, wind and extreme weather events, carports provide a myriad of protection for homes, vehicles, and residents alike. Carports also shield vehicles from falling trees, and offer an extra measure of security for children, singles, and the elderly by creating the shortest distance possible between their vehicle and the entrance to the house.

For many homes in Melbourne, the addition of a carport creates extra storage, work, or organization space.

We have other customers who uses their carport as a tool sheds, said Mr Taylor, while others use it to store boats, trailers, motorbikes and more. Many families use the space to entertain because the shade provided from the carport creates the perfect spot for a BBQ.

The most popular carports in Melbourne are constructed from either timber or steel. Some opt for a pergola style carport using either shade cloth and or vines, a great way to go if constrained by a smaller budget.

Timber carports allow residents to install rich shades of wood that complement their home and surrounding landscaping. Steel carports offer a sleek, modern look for the discerning home owner who wants the ultimate in security and design. Both carport types can be customized based on size, dimensions, roofing materials, and home layout.

Further customization is available still through companies like Carports Melbourne, by providing painting options so that residents can match their existing house colors or modernize the front of the property.

Bear Creek Charter School project on time and on budget

    - November 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The new Bear Creek Community Charter School construction project continues to be on time and on budget, the schools board of trustees heard Monday.

Their meeting opened with an update from the construction team. The flooring for the second level of the elementary section of the school has been poured, wall studding is going up and fireproofing is underway, the board was told. Construction is starting on the middle-school wing, and the steel for the gymnasium has been delivered.

In addition, a transition team is being formed to begin the process of moving from the existing building to the new one, school CEO Jim Smith said.

Also discussed was the installation of the new schools playground. A agreement was approved with The Playground Pros for the installation of the new play structure at a cost of $25,980, based on prevailing wages.

The board also discussed some strategies and options for divesting the existing school properties once all operations are moved into the new building.

The school and its foundation own a number of properties in the vicinity of the current school, including several homes, the existing school grounds and the former St. Christophers Church. The foundation plans to sell the properties once they are no longer needed and considered options for finding serious offers for the properties.

In other business, the board accepted the resignation of third-grade teacher Lisa Tomolonis-Sipler and approved the appointment of Mary Kasper as a long-term substitute for the same position for the remainder of the school year.
