The fourth annual No Room at the Inn event, benefiting Family Promise of Midland, will give Midlanders a chance to browse through hundreds of privately collected nativities.

The No Room at the Inn event has just always been really special, said Kay Brockman, volunteer and displayer at the event. You just see everything from gloriously sculpted things to a rubber ducky (nativity). Its just a fun time and I think that everyone should at least come out and look at all of the beautiful nativities. It makes for a fun afternoon.

In addition, Brockman said organizers encourage anyone interested to join in the event and display their own nativities as well.

Everyone should bring their own nativities out to display, said Brockman, who will be displaying one of her own. Theyre welcome to bring it the Thursday night before the event and sign it in.

While not required, Family Promise will accept a donation of $5 upon entry to the event.

We do ask for a $5 donation and it all goes to Family Promise, Brockman said. We would just like for people to come out and support Family Promise. Even if they dont wish to support monetarily, just their presence here would be an honor. Plus theyll enjoy it.

Brockman said the event ties into the mission of Family Promise thematically as it works with the assistance of its Interfaith Hospitality Network to provide assistance to families who are dealing with homelessness.

For the ones that have been able to enter (the program), they have found a room. Some people dont make it but most of them do, Brockman said. With the economy the way it is now, its hard to think that people would be homeless but they are. Im always surprised how many people need a hand.

Currently the program is at full capacity with four families, providing them with shelter at one of several host churches. Families stay at each host church for one week at a time from 6 p.m. to 6:15 a.m. each day.

Adults in the program are required to work or attend school full time during the day for the full two to three months they are in the program. Free child care and afterschool care is provided for the children in the program as well.

Chick-fil-A, a national restaurant chain known for its lineup of grilled chicken entrees, plans to open a restaurant with inside eating and drive-thru service across from the Larkspur Hotel in a shopping center that also includes In-N-Out and Denny's restaurants.

Plans for the 5,399-square-foot restaurant with a double drive-thru have been approved by the Pleasanton Planning Commission and will go to the City Council for final approval Dec. 2.

The restaurant will be located on a half-acre parcel that can be reached off Johnson Drive near Hopyard Road and its interchange with Interstate 580.

The restaurant would be open from 6 a.m. to midnight six days a week and, like all Chick-fil-A operations, would be closed on Sundays.

Bending to Pleasanton planning staff's requests, the Chick-fil-A here would feature Craftsman-style architecture without the sometimes garish colors the restaurant and its promotion signs feature in other locations.

In fact, Deborah Kerr, consulting project manager for the restaurant company, said she wants to include a "Welcome to Pleasanton" sign on the top half of the building, which would be visible from the freeway interchange.

If approved by the City Council, construction of the new Chick-fil-A would begin early next year.

If you're doing a home remodeling project, it's smart to include time limits and your options if the contractor fails to meet them.

Contractors want to get started and finished as soon as possible so they get paid, but sometimes delays occur and they can be long and frustrating. Having a defined start date and an estimated time to complete the entire job can make it easier for you to cancel.

"The whole island will be demolished out," Victor Matos said.

Matos is doing a full kitchen remodel. He gave a company called Da Vinci Green a $4,000 deposit on a $24,000 contract and expected work to begin right away. There was no estimated time to complete in the contract.

"He said he could not put an estimate date on there right now, because he needed his designer to come out to the house, the next day," Matos said.

The design was finished, but the estimated completion date was never added to the contract. There was also no official start-by date.

"It's not something anybody ever thinks about because you think the guy wants to finish the job as soon as possible so he can get paid as soon as possible," Matos said.

Matos said problems finalizing the design and ordering cabinets lead to a nearly two-month delay in starting. Matos said he wanted to cancel, but the contractual right to do that had expired.

If he canceled now, he would owe 20percentof the total contract price. He would lose his $4,000 deposit and owe another $900. That is when Matos said he realized how important a formal start-by date can be.
